The Devil Makes Three
My favorite on this list, and probably my favorite band of all time. They're an acoustic trio and a perfect mix of bluegrass/folk/blues. Their most popular song is called "Old No. 7". It was so hard for me to pick a favorite by them since I love every single thing that they've ever made, but I included two.
North Carolina- https://youtu.be/61Jfq21s7Ks
All Hail- https://youtu.be/_WooFSKUEA0
Trampled by Turtles
Beautiful music from these guys. Amazing banjo and fiddle. My next favorite on this list. So many of their songs are insanely passionate and I have to struggle not to cry most of the time. Wait So Long is probably their most popular song. I included my personal favorite.
Codine- https://youtu.be/mOV4PKZgqOo
Old Crow Medicine Show
Oh man, these guys right here. This isn't your average "whiskey and cocaine" type of country (although they do have multiple songs about cocaine) these guys are more... moonshine and meth kind of country, but.... in a good way. Trust me. So many fun songs that you can dance and party to, but also a lot of gorgeous ones. Crazy talent. I especially love the harmonica. I included my favorite fun song of theirs.
Steppin' Out- https://youtu.be/qXDKityurbg
The Steeldrivers
The vocalist is AMAZING. Beautiful, heartbreaking stuff right here.
If It Hadn't Been for Love- https://youtu.be/_OG8Y7wDUVo
The Avett Brothers
These guys are cute, lots of fun songs. Very sing-a-long-y. A bit more folk combined with bluegrass.
One Line Wonder- https://youtu.be/U-R2Nhsj2mI
The Rubber Knife Gang
Twainy but also folky. If you liked the other ones, you'll most definitely enjoy these guys.
Tennessee Mountain Girl- https://youtu.be/bqvO1Zb6ELM
BadtothePwn
Also Greensky Bluegrass, check out their song "Demons"
lilleigh3
I also am a fan of Steve Martin and his albums. Was super impressed.
BetYouCantHitMeWithaQuarter
The two he's done with Edie Brickell were great. Full of excellent story songs.

Possessed By Paul James

It's criminal not to mention Yonder Mountain String Band. They headline the Northwest String Summit near Portland, OR.
Lubanjo
Yeah what the hell. YMSB is the best
KMonetRitch
I completely forgot about YMSB. I guess I'll be listening to them shortly.
SnailsAgainstTungstenSpheres
I see devil makes three every chance I get. I love that band
SnailsAgainstTungstenSpheres
If you want traditional check out The Del McCoury Band. Best ones out there right now IMO
Gungagin
Uh, "Guy on a Buffalo" not on the list. False
awcfgc2008
"What's that in the weeds...it's a baby...awesome!"
increasinglypoordecisions
Check out Brothers Comatose, they'll be a welcome addition to this list
WhereIsBatman
Their newest album is absolutely fantastic. Proof that crowd funding sometimes works.
PointMiner
Do yourself a favor and listen to Earl Scruggs and Lester Flatt.
tekknoire
Pretty much the only actual bluegrass mentioned in this post/thread.
OldIronsides
And Seldom Scene.
fistermatic5000
Scruggs and Flatt is my shit
iforgotwhatiwasdoinghere
He has.
RandyReady
Absolutely. Scruggs' 3 finger picking is amazing (RIP).
Gigahwatt
@OP The song you linked for Steeldrivers is from when Chris Stapleton was the singer. Pictured is the new guy.
Katadeus
Punch Brothers might not really count but they're really good
cstir15
Them and anything else Chris Thile does rules. My dad calls it "new grass" but still dope nonetheless
jessticular
Punch Brothers definitely count! :)
Brainsplosion
None of these really count as bluegrass so you're good. Punch Brothers are awesome!
curlyheadedfuck
Love them!
TheMediocreThor
Nathaniel Raicliff and the Night Sweats might not count either but they have some great, toe tappin jams too!
HipHipsterHippie
And Nicklecreek for that matter!
GreetingsSirAndOrMaamIAmUsingThisFieldToIntroduceMyselfAscrsklr
Newgrass is still grass
beleginwaffle
Yes! Chris Thile and anyone else he plays music with.
mdr4118
I've got hours and hours of bluegrass, hit me up if you are interested :)
Angatita
My dad was in a bluegrass band when I was growing up. Always hated it until I went to an Alison Krauss/Union Station concert.
Brainsplosion
.357 String Band deserves a mention
popedouglas
.357 was the best. ever. anywhere. Sad they are no longer. Saw them live twice in my day and those are two experiences I will never forget.
tattooedheathen
Goddamn Gallows, anyone?
popedouglas
you mother fuckers need jesus
BlahDerpBlah
Awesome tips! Thank you very much!
ByTheBeardOfSeuss
These are modern bluegrass. The closest to traditional would be Old Crow and Steeldrivers. Ralph Stanley, Bill Monroe; that's bluegrass.
TurtBurglar
I was actually going to include Ralph Stanley. I love him. Not sure why I didnt.
flippywizgig
I learned to love bluegrass and folk with A Prairie Home Companion. I'm gonna miss Garrison.
PatMacGroin
Old Crow is technically old time. Classic Bluegrass has a major mandolin component. That said they are my absolute favorite
wallaceeffect
Chatham County Line is traditional, check them out!
illwillwalk
Isnt the lead singer of Steeldrivers Chris Stapleton? He's making a name for himself as a solo artist now
Gigahwatt
He was. The guy second from the right in the picture replaced him.
OmgPleaseSendCoffeeASAP
Can highly recommend DM3, steeldrivers and old crow. Will be checking out the others today, thanks
MisterPandaHD
I saw the devil makes three live, opening for Flogging Molly and let me just say the energy they show is amazing. Would totally recommend!
thevortexmaster
Steve and the seagulls!!!! All bluegrass metal covers. Nothing like bluegrass Pantera and iron maiden
NOINOON
It's "Steve 'n' Seagulls" (word play of "Steven Seagal"). They have a some really nice songs but most sound a bit forced.
thevortexmaster
Ya I know I have the albums and know the name. It was easier to write that then battle auto correct
TreadstoneJB
Chris Stapleton was in the SteelDrivers. They are so much better with his vocals
3ncrypt3d1
My favorite band is Tool, but some bluegrass musicians can freakin rock.
thevortexmaster
Same here, check out tool on mandolin
iforgotwhatiwasdoinghere
Are we the same person?
Kalooki
Devil Makes Three are absolutely fantastic. Saw them in London and they just killed it!
Yepitsausername
They're the only group that can get me to go out into a crowd to see them. Excellent music
daralingg
OMG DRIFTWOOD. PLEASE LISTEN TO DRIFTWOOD.
Tabsandstuff
Check out Larry and His Flask. I have a feeling they will be right up your alley.
TurtBurglar
Cool, I will! Thanks for the suggestion.
Tabsandstuff
Also, Calamity cubes, and Hillstomp (awesome two piece band that does some R.L. Burnside covers.
Psychedelicious
Great band
FireSlayer1672
I like "I and Love and You" by the Avett Brothers.
HAHHNN
The bluegrass in them is most prevalent on Carolina Jubilee
UrbanPanda
Shame got me hooked
TurtBurglar
Yeah, that's definitely one of their most popular songs. One Line Wonder was got me into them, so I figured that'd be a good one to add.
OldIronsides
http://youtu.be/0g-4TLhnbiI check out The Seldom Scene. You won't regret it
OldIronsides
Also, Georgia Rose by Seldom Scene is a classic http://youtu.be/mXJUpaPTLYI

YES
Alanj70
Funk yea
TurtBurglar
Forgot to point out, this is MODERN bluegrass, not traditional. Just to be clear. Traditional bluegrass is amazing too, though.
katzbird
If you want something in between, New Riders of the Purple Sage and Old And In The Way are good. (Some of the same people in both)
indiefab
I'm headed to the Hard Rock - Cancun in February for 4 nights of shows with Avetts and Devil Makes 3, along with Jason Isbell and others.
PincheTab
Thanks for the post. I haven't heard any bluegrass other than what I've heard in movies. I'll give them all a listen. :)
YoScott
I like your list. going to see Devil Makes 3 in Jan. Tried Infamous Stringdusters or Greensky Bluegrass?
TurtBurglar
Me too!! Where at? And yeah, I actually JUST started listening to both of those. They're pretty good!
YoScott
I'm in Charlottesville, VA. we have a thriving bluegrass nu-grass, whatever grass they are calling it these days scene.
TurtBurglar
Sweet. I'm seeing them in New York City in January. We, unfortunately, don't have any type of bluegrass scene at all. I travelled the US for
TurtBurglar
a few years and I got into bluegrass when I was in Texas. I wish I was down south right now.
YoScott
Might not be much of a scene, but it exists! A local band from here plays at Brooklyn Bowl pretty frequently. Love Canon. you should check..
