I have been drifting in and out of sleep for the last couple of hours, was lying kind of half on my side half on my back and felt awake. All of a sudden I could hear talking in my ear, almost like a TV was on nearby. Then the talking turned to loud static. I tried to move and absolutely couldn't. I tried calling my husband's name and could hear myself barely whispering it, like my voice had gone. Got totally freaked out but I had heard of sleep paralysis before. So I took a few slow breaths and tried to move again, even harder. Still couldn't move an inch. Strangest feeling ever. Then I heard what sounded like sheets rustling on the other side of the bed and felt relief thinking it was my husband coming to bed. Said his name and was actually able to get it out this time but very quietly. No answer. Got totally freaked out, but was finally able to break free and move. Turned on a light to find no one and nothing there. Like wtf dude.

FP edit: holy shit, never made front page before, been so enthralled in reading everybody's stories I didn't even realize! Thanks guys, send more experience stories if you want. For tonight, hope everyone sleeps tight, don't let the bed bugs bite!

I've experienced it hundreds of times. You can learn to dispel that terror and become aware of what's happening. It's fascinating.

I get an episode every time I sleep on my back looking up in the ceiling, try sleeping on your side, improved it for me.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Had it happen to me once, worst part I could see a dark outline of a person standing at the side of the bed looking down at me.

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

I have sleep paralysis at least once a week, you learn how to cope . If you don’t get scared , scary things can’t happen so try to relax!

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I had 2 back-to-back dreams/sleep paralysis like that this week. Both times it looked like someone was standing outside my bedroom door.

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

The worst experience with SP I had was like 7 years ago when I was trying to induce lucid dreaming. I was paralyzed while I saw this (1)

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

(2) shadow figure from across the room start moving towards me. I started yelling for my parents until they came in, and it was gone

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I used to have this so often that after a while I would just give in and lay there. It always happens when I’m really tired.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

This happened to me when I was a kid. Woke up to something hitting my bed. when I went to yell I couldn't and I was unable to move 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

After a few minutes passed I eventually just decided to close my eyes and try to sleep. Woke up in the morning just fine. Scary though. 2/2

Sleep paralysis: The condition of the body where the emergency brakes are locked until a minute or two after the engine was started because

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

it thought it was nearly in an accident while the engine was off.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

The most scary part is not inability to move but getting overwhelming fear that there's a some kind of dark presence.

8 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

I've had several encounters for the past year, mostly it happends when I'm sleeping on my back. I have been strangled, sit on. 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

But the time it really freaked me out was when when someone close to me was there. Hope it was a one time thing!

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Terrified me as a child. Now when it happens it's more of an annoyance am I'm like, "well fuck here we go again".

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I must be a masochist. This has happened a few times to me and each time I thought it was awesome, spooky as duck, but awesome

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It was terrifying the first few times, but now I find it more intriguing. But of course now I don’t get it anymore :/

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah a few times this happened while I was on tramadol for my back. Literally thought aliens were afoot.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It happens to me semi regularly, especially during a nap. I either go back asleep or I make a concerted effort to kick my feet and wake up.

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

Your minds imagination goes into overdrive usually when in that state, Hence the 'hallucinations'. I get it at least a cpl times a month.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Recommendation. Don't fall asleep on your back. Happens 100% of the time when I do that. It's the reason I sleep on my side now.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Ditto.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I dont think I get sp but sometimes taking a power nap being half asleep half awake is the best rushed feeling ever. Until you sleep fall

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I have sleep apnea and without my CPAP this happens on a regular basis. It's horrifying. So many nightmares.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I was diagnosed with narcolepsy because I was suffering from sleep paralysis almost every night. If it happens more frequently, go to a

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Sleep clinic just in case. Sleep paralysis happens to everyone but frequency is uncommon.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I felt an evil presence in the room. It ran up my leg and sat on my chest. It started to choke me. I couldn't breathe and started panicking.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Then the paralysis broke and I was awake. The next week I had a nightmare and woke up. A few seconds later I had the sensation and sound of

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

My throat getting bitten/chomped.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Wait till you experience a hypnic jerk. Laying in bed all cozy, drifting off to magical relaxed sleep land and then WHAM! You wake up!

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

So many times! Usually follows an anxiety attack prior to sleeping. Bodies are weird.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I had a dream I was running through huge concrete pillars away from myself, I sort of fell off a cliff but I fell up? Woke to me (1/2)

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Hyperventilating as I hit the 'ground'. Only time I've ever hyperventilated in my sleep and it scared the shit out of me

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I've never experienced this, but I don't want to, so I always sleep facing down, el muerto doesn't hop on you if you are facing down

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

That’s where you’re kiddo

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Wrong, sorry

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Why am I wrong?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That happened to me once about 10 years ago. Never knew it was a thing. Totally thought I had died. Holy shit is it a freaky experience.

8 years ago | Likes 255 Dislikes 0

you get used to it, everyone i know who experienced it a lot says the same, sometimes i get lazy and let it drag for a while then wake up

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I do have it, but it's very rare. As soon as it happens, i just try to move my foot. After about 10 seconds the foot moves and i'm free!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

yeah i thought i was having a stroke or something and couldn't reach the light or call out for help. Fucking terrifying.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Had it once on a train, traveling with a couple of friends at night. In my dream this omnious person slowly but surely made it's way 1/

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

towards where I sat, it was basically a figure composed of shadowy wisps. And I just couldn't move. I tried to shout for help, but it 2/

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

was like trying to move through mud, according to one friend I faintly started to whisper, he was worried an started to nudge me

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Incedently my shadowy friend decided to reach with its "hand" towards me the same time in my hallucination. My fight or flight instinct 4/

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

went into overdrive and against all the invisible weight holding me back I was able to make a fist. Oh so slowly it started to make its way

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Protip: If you're having thoughts or experiencing consciousness, you're not dead.

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 33

Dying is a process though, with different levels of consciousness throughout.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

This is more accurate. I get sleep paralysis and it feels like systems are shutting down. You feel 9 out of the 10 stages towards death

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

username is spot on.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I didn’t know what the hell was happening. For a minute I thought I had died but my brain hadn’t totally shut off yet. It’s beyond freaky.

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

The last thing I remembered was a big red ball that flew out of a giant zipper after it unzipped. The ball had wings, there was /

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Bright light behind it. The ball sounded like a huge carpenter bee. Then I woke up. Pale white, getting CPR, and a bunch of IVs on me.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Wait till you see a scary face with red glowing eyes coming towards with a knife. I can never forget that.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Mine is a shadow man in a black hat and trench coat

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

So creepy! you just described the same man I’ve seen dozens of times too! Black Shadow man with a black hat and coat.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I hate it so much.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I guess maybe similar things happen with kids and hence they get scared in their bedrooms around bedtime. 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And adults only feel this way during sleep paralysis. Who knows?! 2/2

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Mine is a shadow woman without a face. She slowly crawled towards me, sat on my chest and choked me. Heart racing, sweating. Fun times :)

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

you guys are so lucky, this sounds fucking awesome.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Nah. I thought I died and I have troubles falling asleep since then.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, not really. I can watch the scariest horror movies and not be moved, but sleep paralysis always gets to me. The fear is part of it.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's an irrational fear that comes out of nowhere; it's not even really focused on the "monster".

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Best I can say is that I have had a massive reduction in my experiences by improving my comfort as I sleep.

8 years ago | Likes 231 Dislikes 0

Best I had was reducing stress by moving away from a toxic work environment. 500 miles away.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I used to have this happen all the time until I got treated for sleep apnea. Now that I use a CPAP it never happens.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

For me, it's pulling all nighters. If I go to sleep extremely exhausted, it increases the likelihood of an episode.

Try the wolf sleep cycle, where you sleep in half hour bursts throughout the day and never have REM sleep or dreams

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I would love to know. I've never been able to make rhyme nor reason of triggers. Never had an attack when drunk tho...

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

i also made sure to cover my eyes as a slept. While it reduces some of the terror the apparitions didn't like it and they got physical.

8 years ago | Likes 45 Dislikes 2

Well that’s terrifying.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Could you elaborate for those of us who never experienced this?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

elaborated under @iatetoomuchpiazza's "what" comment.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Elaboration under @Iatetoomuchpizza "What." comment.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Let me hear your body talk, your body talk

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

What.

8 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

oh you didn't know that could happen? So you aren't in any physical danger but they can talk to you and "inflict" pain. i haven't (1/2)

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

woken up with marks or anything. One of the worst times was after i just started covering my face. I decided the episodes would be less (2/?

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

terrifying if i did it kid style and covered my head in my blanket (earlier that night i had had a few episodes). Now to preface this (3/?)

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

The first time I experienced this I was 8 and I was sure that I felt hands holding me, I couldn't even breath.

8 years ago | Likes 57 Dislikes 1

Yep, you were being fucked by an incubus. Soz.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This was how mine was...I felt like I was being held down.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Same. felt like there was a weight on me, and every noise freaked me out. Eventually i figured the pressure was the "dead weight" of my body

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Did you manage to open your eyes? Bc I did once and regretted for life.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I did! I cried, no movement or talking just tears. Not cool.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In my first time I couldn't even breath

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I had heard before of people seeing shadowy figures, amongst other things, and was really glad afterwards I had all my lights turned off

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's true, j saw some "shadows" figures they were walking out of my bedroom, I know they weren't real but i got scared as hell that day.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Story time

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The first few times were terrifying for me. But I eventually realised my body was paralysed and I was lucid dreaming. Now when it 1/?

8 years ago | Likes 119 Dislikes 0

It can happen to me multiple times a day, sometimes within minutes of each other and I am completely awake, just can't move.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Happens I can controll the dream. It's still creepy but I got used to it. Sometimes I am entirely awake and it takes a few mins to move. 2/2

8 years ago | Likes 84 Dislikes 0

I tried to control a dream a few times, it didn't worm

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I used to have night terrors as a kid and sleep paralysis as a teen. After college I was really good at lucid dreaming. Never connected them

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The reverse happened to me. I taught myself how to Lucid dream as a kid. when i got older and depressed i used it as an escape and got (1/?)

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

i curbed my addiction and stopped doing it. Which in turn made me lose control of my dreams and so i gained sleep paralysis/night terrors.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Yah, me too. I recognise it for what it is, don't get so freaked out anymore. Your body does wake itself up.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

When that happened to me a couple of times I taught myself to wake up because I wasn't able to control the dreams. Exhausting as fuck!

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Same, it can nearly be fun at times, but only until you slip into that dark spot and either wake up shivering or fall into the dream

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

At this point I've been alone so long that it doesn't even matter. "I can't move, someone's holding me down. This is almost like 1/2

cuddling. This is nice. Goodnight, constantly-screaming eyeless Asian girl. Sweet dreams." 2/2
