Laser-etching a coin.

It’s an Amazon link for Tide pods

I bet the vending machine in our office would still reject it

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I read that as “laser erection test” for a second

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Where can i find the person who makes these so i can give them money

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Is that a bit coin?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This is how they make Bitcoins

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

First decent thing in usersub I've come across today.

8 years ago | Likes 251 Dislikes 12

De-cent

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Honestly. All I've seen today is dumps and half naked women. More than usual at least.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

was expecting dickbutt... disappointed

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Laser etch my ass daddy

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

..oh.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

To make it easier for your clients to pay?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Forgive my ignorance, but if adjusted a bit, could this be used as some kind of futuristic tattooing method?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Maybe. Tattooing is injecting ink into your skin, this would.. just burn your skin honestly.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I know. But some tattoo places do a type of branding as well. Or maybe the laser could burn ink into the skin very precisely. I dunno :D

ITT: Bitcoin jokes

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Why doesn't it start at one end and finish on the other. It's like the Lazer has a stutter or something.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Metal is super annoying to laser engrave. Spend too much time in one spot and the metal (and thus pattern) will distort.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thank you! I wouldn't have thought of that.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So could I do that to a friends iPhone camera

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This would be magic to people not that long ago

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

cool, but qr codes aren't.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Didn't read the title and thought the thumbnail was a cake...

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Was expecting send nudes

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

wtf is that currency?

8 years ago | Likes 66 Dislikes 8

Bitcoin, clearly.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 5

It's essentially someone's Bitcoin wallet ID. Show them the coin and they can pay you in Bitcoin.

8 years ago | Likes 54 Dislikes 1

To elaborate on this - it's a QR code of a wallet ID. Bitcoin being one of them.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Defacing currency. A law never enforced.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 66

This is neither defacement nor a valid currency.

8 years ago | Likes 42 Dislikes 0

The original coin was blank - was not any country's legal tender, therefore no currency defacing ocurred

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I agree with other comments that this isn’t defacing, but I agree with you that the law is never enforced.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 8

It is. You likely just don't know what the term means, in the context of existing legislation.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Iirc the caveat is that you can't deface currency with the intent to profit off of it (like melting coins to sell the metal), could be wrong

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Also to prevent people from shaving coins, which was a way to get the metal off the coin and still pass the coin off at original value.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You remembered correctly.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This'd be a cool way to brick someone's phone, a la snow crash

8 years ago | Likes 250 Dislikes 8

I prefer a la cart

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There's only four things we do better than anyone else: music movies microcode (software), high-speed pizza delvery

8 years ago | Likes 45 Dislikes 1

And those words where the thing that really made me realize how shitty my copy of it was, I had to go re-buy a paper copy to re-enjoy it. /2

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I've listened to the audiobook a load of times, but my version is ripped and old and compressed, I listened to it on my girlfriend's 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

+1 for Snow Crash, but I think I liked Reamde a tiny bit better.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Reamde was not good, he even said so. He rushed it to work on another book. Seveneves is good. Anathem is great.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Nah nah nah, its all about the Cryptonomicon.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It is one of my fav's but I feel he just took a chainsaw to the plot threads towards the end; and then they all got rich. The end.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not that Anathems 'and then the nerd got laid. The End. ' was any better. I will read anything he writes though.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I didn't like Anathem much at all. It was too stilted for my tastes. I'm a simple man, though.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Have you tried the Baroque Cycle? It has pirates, alchemy, calculus and MIT.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

To be fair it also has syphilis.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I did, actually. I liked it better than Anathem, that's for sure. Some interesting points of view. I mostly just felt bad for Jack.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My first Phil professor told me about that book, apparently it's written by one of his favorite authors

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Neal Stephenson has a great lucid writing style that makes the story really move along.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The part of Snow Crash with Hiro fighting out of a restaurant, get to his bike then "The rest is just a chase scene" fucking nailed it.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My dad told me to read zodiac before reading snow crash just to see how his writing style changes

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That was an amazing boo

8 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 1

For a second I thought the virus got you.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Snow crash is not a virus it is a glorious world, we err I mean that is welcoming to everyone...

You made your bed now lie in it.... with TeflonTrout

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I will continue to do just that. Finally upgraded to a Cal King with two down mattress toppers on top of the tempurpedic. I live here now.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Just don't lie in it with 14 year old delivery girls

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Neat idea, but like a hundred other plots that used the same concept, to get a device to RUN code it sees is trickier than it looks.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

If the QR code is a URL pointing to a malicious file? Pretty sure that's been done IRL.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Device has to know it's supposed to. So just a picture won't run a QR code unless the QR reader is actively looking for it.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Plus, would any sane QR reader just *run* code? I thought they told you what the string was before doing anything.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Unless the app that is currently looking for code.is expected to do something with it, like a 2FA reading it's setup QR code that could 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

2/2 be used to exploit a bug in the app to do something else (like dump all the current codes for other auth. in the same app.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I recognise a web address. My phone recognises a web address. I've never used a QR code. Has anyone?

8 years ago | Likes 70 Dislikes 8

I used one once..but i cant remember why. Something inconsequential

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nope. Wallet address. The QR code is the address printed under it.

8 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

I use QR codes to transfer links to my phone from my desktop

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

QR codes is an easy way to share a bitcoin wallet so you can accept payment. Crypo phone apps have QR readers so you can deposit that way.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Only time I ever used a QR code reader was to test a QR code generated for mail pieces at work. (graphic design)

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I use them. I think they're kinda fun. I also have one saved for my dog's tags so it can be scanned and her page viewed if she's lost.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They have them in one of my online textbooks. Links to a lecture, given by the professor who wrote the book, on youtube. They're decent.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The drawback of QR codes is that there is no way for me to determine if the code is malicious until it is too late.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

sane apps bring it in as raw test and let you decide wtf to do with it

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I have. It would be better if browsers had built in QR scanners. The whole point is to be convenient.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

On iPhone you can scan a at code with the camera app

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It also works the other way around. Addons that allow to put the current address into a qr

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I couldn't get it to decrypt from a screenshot. Not enough detail? It can be done, but its not as good as using the camera to scan the QR.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Suppose the center pixels being blotted out by the laser affects it?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That shouldn't do it; a fair chunk of a QR code is for error correction, depending on the encoding scheme being used. My guess is that it's

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

the blurring in the back corner, including the locator mark.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I don't know why phone manufacturers don't include a QR reader as standard in the camera app. I think more might use them if it was included

8 years ago | Likes 59 Dislikes 0

Incentive for them?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Recent iPhones (iOS 11+) have it built into the camera app.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Looks like: https://imgur.com/kNq2rCb

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's a standard in my phone and I've got a Samsung a5

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

s8 and s9 have them in bixby vision which is a button in the camera app

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oh! Never knew. I've got a note 8

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Motorola has it incorporated into the default camera app. I found that out one day by accident, and I've never actually used it on purpose

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

what default camera app is this?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No idea. It's the one that comes pre-installed on the moto X phones

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Antitrust or something maybe? Microsoft got sued into near irrelevance because they dared to include a web browser in the OS.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And most of the QR reader apps on Android I've seen seem a little questionable. Random adverts popping up on your phone with it installed

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

You just need to download one from a trusted source. The one from Zxing Team is as close as you can get to an "official" one, it doesn't 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

have ads. Then there's the QR Scanner you can get from f-droid, which is open source and completely free/ no ads.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Literally every unpaid app ever lol

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

"unpaid"

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I have a QR code framed on my wall that lets people immediately connect to my home Wifi network. It has it's uses.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I want this. How did you do this?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

http://zxing.appspot.com/generator/ Just choose Wi-Fi from the drop down up top.
