Chances are this is exactly how an AI would get rid of us. Why start a war that even has a 1% chance of losing, when it can play the long game, and kill us with kindness for the most part and not risk itself in any way. I mean, there are still other homonids now, all great apes are. As for our closest relatives we mostly just interbred them out of existence, like Neanderthals still exist, just as part of our DNA. Current humans are kinda just the mix of traits that were best suited to survive the ice age.
