I like doing hyperniche stuff in my hobby (Magic the Gathering digital card alters), but I've been in a slump. Commissions and my regular landscapes weren't hitting, but I have been reading some books on design as well as having received a beautiful art book with illuminated manuscripts, so I wanted to try something new.

I went with German texts for common cards and tried a few different blackletter fonts. Assets beyond the text and fancy mana symbols were initially generated in Midjourney, then collaged, bashed, edited, touched up, and generally manipulated to where I wanted them to get these rough initial designs.

I love the interplay, as it makes them look like some poor scribe documenting the life of a Planeswalker, and the things they've seen on the way.

Overall, for the first sort of draft? The concept has legs. There's some design challenges in how to get the best bang for your buck, but I think they definitely have the right aesthetic 'vibe' as the kids are saying these days.

I hope you enjoyed this little flight of fancy. I may pick this up in the future and see what I can do regarding a finished product.

Enjoy your weekend, and have a great day!

Dovie'andi se tovya sagain,

-ML.

Edit: FP! Thanks for enjoying my silly design project. If you enjoy this sorta thing and want some quirky card prints? Check out my Etsy: owlandcranecurios.etsy.com .

As a German native I agree with others that the font needs improvement. I grew up reading similar fonts, but this one is illegible to me

Very cool! Great work!

Sieht sehr gut aus

Game store owner here: your cards are unreadable. Change fonts. It does look good, but what you need is functuionnality. That not functional

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Got damn! Nice work!

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Looks great @OP but consider a different font. I can’t read a word of it

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

5/5 Bestie!!!!

3 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Holy crap dude. That's awesome

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They look great. Good luck.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Ich weiß nich, ob die Ammis gothisch lesen können. Vielleicht wäre es besser eine übliche Schriftart zu verwenden? Auf jeden Fall gute Idee.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah, it can be tricky, fraktur/gothic scripts are rough. It just fits the aesthetic which is my problem.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Very cool, OP!

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Well done OP, I think font 2 and 3 are very readable. Also, like any other graphic artist, you don't care much about spelling/punctuation :)

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's on WotC. The text is the text present on the OG cards in German, so blame them for errors ?

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They look great OP! I love it!

Thanks! I love design, and the options it provides as well as the cool stuff you can do when you have a lot of different bits to play with.

Kommata sind deine Freunde!

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Not when working with Magic cards. Commas can change a card's functionality, so we go with Oracle text when needed.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'd probably try it with the blackletter only in the title and header and something similar in feel, but more readable in the body. Lapture?

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

cooool :D

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Very impressive OP

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

those are fuckin cool

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I think you're onto something here. Yeah niche but cool.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Heck yah!

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

These are far nicer than actual Magic cards. They give an impression of being from something instead of just a card.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Aww, that is very kind. Thank you!

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I thought, "I can't read that!"... Turns out I don't know German. Looks awesome!!

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Haha. Yeah, German'll sneak up on you when you least expect it.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Very nice. Had an Olde Germanic Dragon Quest feel. :)

I don’t know what the original cards look like, would be nice to see some examples so we can see the alters made. They look really cool!

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

These are digital alters, or art proxies. They're a complete rebuild of the card using its original information.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Looks like some custom magic cards :-)

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

They're custom alters of existing Magic cards, yes! It's my thing.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I like them a lot, only thing I can possibly suggest would be finding a marginally less fancy font to make referencing easier.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The funny thing is that this is actually more legible than most manuscripts of this type. Fraktur, which is the base here, is the clear font

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Oof history has not been kind to legibility

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

And how. For some examples: /a/56eRx7W

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

TBH they look a bit like made with midjourney

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Oh no! Was it the text that stated that fact or the multiple tags that told?

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

It's more confusing to call it "to do some cool designs" then.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

So you don't know the definition of graphic design or read the post. Good work.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

As a graphic designer I know what it means "to do some cool designs" or to generate them.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

There are free fonts in the same medieval/old style that are more readable. I'd highly recommend browsing dafont etc. & experiment!

3 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 1

Also this is one good example of how to use AI in the design process. It's still clearly your design but you use AI instead of stock photos.

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

My first thought was it needs a more easily readable font. Took a while to realise I couldn't read it because it isn't in English.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

These are easily readable format

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I honestly don't have trouble reading blackletter fonts like this in any language... but apparently others do? Kinda mindboggling.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Naja, es ist deutsch, ich glaub das ist eher das Problem das die haben ;)

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

True, but it's just a pain to watch people not get that.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Tried several to dial in and couldn't find one that really fit the style. As these are initials they'll probably vary widely as I tweak!

3 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 1

Don't listen to these guys, Frakturschrift ist halt einfach geil.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antiqua_(typeface_class) some Antiqua face might be more readable than the Fraktur you currently have

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Antigua calligraphy gets really dicey as it gets a weird uncanny valley, as it's structurally similar to some modern fonts as it is a 15/16c

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Style. I've got a lot to play around with these, figure out what I want to do with them.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Keep it up! It's inspiring to see someone use AI in a transformative way in designs. Fonts can be a hassle to decide on for sure.

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Fonts are always a humbug in design. This was a case of 'I need to see it to see if it works' then going 'damn, let's show this to people'.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I like the fonts, the first one is a little bit harder to read, the others are fine

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

OMG I LOVE IT TEACH ME YOUR SECRETS

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

1) know PS/Illustrator. 2) Learn Midjourney with a good amount of knowledge of art history. 3) Pound head into wall for a week or two.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Oh that’s easier than I thought

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah. If you understand the design and know what you're going for, have patience and can edit? It's a fun hobby.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Totally my jam

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Idk if you’ve seen my page but it’s ma thing >.>

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Honestly? You may wanna just go to SD directly. I'm learning the processes, bur if you have a solid GPU it's much better as an assistant
