Meet Izzy! She’s learning all about life and being the best dog ever! She’s up for adoption through Ccrcdogs.com #adopt_dont_shop #adopt #doggo #dogs_are_the_best_people #deaf #amazing #training

My dog can hear, but responds to hand gestures. Hand on chest = sit. Point down = lay down. "Stop" hand = quiet. Jazz hands = stop begging.

My Tucker looks like Izzy’s identical twin!

Oh my goodness! I've found that non-verbal cues work better, even for dogs with hearing. Geez I wish I could adopt.

I can see/hear & so can my dogs but I've always trained all abilities with hand signs and teach them to do the command with JUST the hand>

signal too. My thought had always been you never know what could happen to either of us or if we meet someone who can't hear/speak

and they need to issue commands, it will be good as well

Genuine question: Is there a standardised sign language for dogs?

4 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

Eh, not ONE standard even for hearing dogs. I've seen the same 2~4 signs for any given command across 2 large countries, incl ASL for some

dogs depending on owner/trainer exposure! It doesn't seem to be a dialectical thing, rather indiv experience & there's always something new

And why the us education system routinely fails students, look at that!

Cuz it needs more deaf dogs??

Because people don't all learn the same way.

Most dogs learn faster with hand signals anyway. With my dog I use hand & verbal signals. She responds to both but prefers hand signals. :-)

Mine too. She thinks 'sit' is context related.

I default to signs as we all say differnt things, and we have an english speaker in the family now too... (we are danish)

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yea, I do both. I'll use hand signals when saying commands until I can switch it up. My most usefull was 'ive got nothing', with both hands

raises and fingers splayed. Most dogs loose interst when you know you have nothing regardless of training

Some people think it's weird but when I meet a new dog I ask what their signals are. No need to confuse the pup.

I love that. Great advice
