Guns n Roses was one of the better bands during the late 80s. But the mid to early 80s was big hair, a lot of drugs, and mediocre skills....but a lot of fun. Some really good songs, but guitar skills? Just showing off...not a lot of substance.
You can have Eddie Van Halen- I will take Hendrix, or Jimmy Page, or Santana....or Jerry Garcia for that matter- 80s were all showiy sustains and silly antics- fun, loud, and energizing...but not original
He even acknowledged that he was just playing around with the techniques that those before him pioneered. He was technically excellent, but originality....meh
