Step 1:
Start of by buying a $10 kids lightsaber (the kind that has the plastic tube that telescopes out)
Step 2:
Beat the crap out of it. This step is if you want to "weather" your lightsaber. You don't have to, but I think it helps to see the "realistic" look when using plastic.
All I used was a $5 pack of acrylic paints, and a couple brushes for the painting. And the multitool you see here to add scratches and marks.
Work in layers. Think about how things get dirty and look at photos of the kind of tools and objects that get used, dirty and covered in grime. Might help to literally hit it with things, scratch it and beat it up. But remember, Less is more. Don't go overboard.
Start with grease and grime. Then add dust, dirt or any other little features.
Step 3: LED's
I used x8 5mm LEDs. They are run in pairs, each with a resistor. Then they run to a 9 volt battery. Pretty simple.
I don't have a soldering iron at the moment, so I had to stick with twisting. A lot of twisting.
Step 4: Grab your blades!
I bought a 6 foot length of 1 inch O/D polycarbonate tube. I forgot to take photos of it... sorry.
It was a little narrow at the end, so I had to heat it up a little and stretch it out with a pair of pliers, in future I'd get a little bit wider of a tube, maybe 1 1/4 inch tube.
I made sure the LEDs would all fit together in the tube (this is before I had to stretch it) You can also see how the tube is frosted here, that's in a later step.
Test fitting... Here you can see the clear tube.
Step 5: Set screws and frosting
I used a few little self tapping screws to hold the tube in place nice and tight. As you can see I also frosted the tube, this helps it look best when lit up. I used "frosted glass spray" from home depot.
Step 6: Battery connections
I used a 9 volt battery clip as both my battery compartment and on/off switch. This saves time, money and effort. You could add an on/off switch to the circuit later, or now I just didn't have time.
Battery in place, it sticks out a little bit, but you cant see it when you're holding the handle, and it makes it easy to pull in and out to turn off and on.
IT LIVES!!
Another detail shot of the weathering.
I distressed the end of the tube with some hot glue, as well as the stretching process, adds to the lighting effect.
Step 7: Make an extra for your girlfriend... or boyfriend.. or cat/dog
This step is vital, not only does it let you see what another color looks like, it makes your girlfriend, boyfriend, cat or dog very happy. It also lets you use the other half of the 6 foot tube you cut down.
Step 8: Use the force.
If you have ANY questions about the steps, processes or need help with this project, please feel free to ask in the comments and I will answer all of them!

I see your schwartz is as big as mine.
IntrovertTurtle
I lack the skills and motivation to do this - but it's pretty sweet tutorial.

You lost me after step 2...
mistermystery
So, google "resistor LED calculator", put in 9v for the supply, 2.1v for the Vf, 20mA for the current, and buy whatever resistors it says.
SenorCulito
Step one: have talent.
CrappyAim
10/10 would make an extra one for my cat to ignore
MarishkaGinny
I would love to make this for my boyfriend, but I became totally lost after the weathering. I'm only so handy.
mistermystery
Google "resistor LED calculator" and look at some basic electronic tutorials. Or ask a local electronics nerd!
enragedelk
I have a question, how can i make it more durable so i could use it for..things. Like those saberforge ones that are designed to smack stuff
kickasssloth
This smacks.. hard. I had a spare bit of the tube and bashed it against a brick wall, nothing happened to it. and my connections are solid
enragedelk
awesome

Well shit! I just bought two of those... might have to do this!

Too late, there's mad science documentaries about that already.

My daughter wants to be Princess Ella Vader, she's 5 and came up with this on her own.

That's awesome! Blow her mind by making one of these. Message me if you want detailed help :)

was thinking the same thing.
kickasssloth
maybe.

We'll pretend we do not know this knowledge.
Greygorn
None of the lightsabers in the movies look anything but brand new. I don't see the point of beating them up to look more realistic.
SonOfAVondruke
Ben's saber in ANH is fairly well weathered. This is based on Luke's RotJ saber though, which he had just finished building days earlier.
SonOfAVondruke
Most of the Star Wars universe (outside the Imperial ships) in the OT is pretty dirty and grimy. It suits the world and gives it character.
kickasssloth
Because not everything has to be perfect all the time. this has a story of someone who has had a long, hard week of fighting etc.
A1iasNode
except that's not accurate at all. Those toy versions are horribly inaccurate
kickasssloth
yea i know that, but at a glance its fine. And I don't have a 3d printer, laithe or anything else
ThatQuietlySmirking
Badass! Totally beyond my ability to construct myself, but still badass!
kickasssloth
Its not hard at all!! seriously, believe in yourself and you can do it too with a little work
Turdbonanza
Hey I have that same leatherman. Neat.
ObnoxiousLabrador
Gerber suspension ? "This is not the leatherman you are looking for" (waves hand)
ObnoxiousLabrador
Aah i seee said the blindman
Turdbonanza
You're correct. I just use leatherman as a misnomer for multi tool.
SgtMichaelCross
Would a small flashlight (like an ultrafire 502b) work instead of the LEDs ? More outward projection ?
kickasssloth
It could, all depends on how you put it together, and if you could fit it in the handle with a way to turn it on and off.
SgtMichaelCross
The whole thing is small, but simple - runs on one 18650. Seems like it'd be ideal for the size of the lightsaber handle! May have to try.
SgtMichaelCross
The thing turns on and off with a clicky on the end, so it could just be moved to the base or something.
kickasssloth
Good luck!
arcticfryze
Is there a way to close the top end of the tube?
kickasssloth
I used a disc of really thick paper just glued there, but id like to try and find something more reflective maybe, you can use anything.
arcticfryze
I don't know if anyone asked this already, but do you have a better description of the electronics build? i.e. the LEDs and resistors?
kickasssloth
Yea sorry, id been building all day and didnt want to go into too much detail, I was tired. Feel free to message me and I'll tell you it all
kickasssloth
More than happy to answer any and all questions here, also sorry for not having the finished product in the first photo...
kennedyl94
im confused on the placement of the leds. are they in the blade? or the hilt? or what?
kickasssloth
They are attached to the inside of the blade, sitting just under where the set screws go in, its a close fit
jimmythehat1
By adding resistors does that give you the blade light extension effect, rather than just all lighting at once?
Fierfly
Resistors just stop the LED's from blowing out when a power source is added. More resistance = less light.
Fierfly
from what I can see he's using 200 Ohm resistors, so those LED's are probably close to max brightness.
kickasssloth
Thanks for covering that for me! You're spot on
deathcab420
okay question: can i be your girlfriend so you can make me one?
Whyaretherenoopenusernames
I'd be willing, as long as you're close enough that transatlanticism isn't necessary.
kickasssloth
I've already got one of those, sorry!
Whyaretherenoopenusernames
I'd be willing, as long as you're close enough that transatlanticism isn't necessary.
Enteyex367
can you make it blackish? like the blade look black, cause I heard there were black sabers
kickasssloth
I guess you could use a very light flat black coat of paint on the tube and use white LEDs, not sure if it would look too great though
AlmostLucid
More husky fluffies please.
Giraffeeatingabanana
May I adopt a puppy?
Galahir950
Is it "duel-ready" or is it just for show?
kickasssloth
Duel ready. Smashed 2 together, accidentally put a hole in the wall... so.. yea.
AFreakingMango
Is that a Quickfire TK? I have the Rapid. Great keyboards.
kickasssloth
Yep haha, way too loud at 3am though :P
Rimgrimner
keyboard brothers yo!
RadicalPotato
So the battery is just kinda sitting there, loosely in the open with no cover? You have to hold it in place? Seems a bit of a hassle...
kickasssloth
Hardly, its a 9 volt and snaps into the bottom, its not lose at all. It's the perfect fit, tight but with a strong hold you can pull it out.
