I'm not a millionaire, but I make a good living doing what I love and I never went to college. So I don't have one of those fancy dresses..

Luxury. We'd get up at 3am, eat a handful of hot gravel, work at th' mill for tuppence a month and Dad would beat us IF WE WERE LUCKY!

Americans are so in love with the struggle. Its all about success against all odds... Over here, top education is free, anyone can and does.

I work with a person who has a similar past. That person is genuinely one of the best people I know. Congrats, I am happy for you.

Stories about superhuman efforts like this just to be viable is fairly damning for the state of this country.

This is a very inapirational post, but one thing bothers me - a laptop for 150 work hours? More like 1500 where i live.
ToxicMolluscinity
1500 hours of work to buy a laptop?? Do you work as a slave mining blood diamonds or something?
Well, I guess if you put it that way, in my country we all do. How much money do you consider normal for a laptop?
50 work hours for a minimum wage earner for a budget model. 150-300 hours for a high end gaming model.
Okey, i wouldn't even consider high-end stuff. Speak to me in dollars or euro and i will explain the difference to you.
BustyInnocent
I'm from Sweden and here ethnicity, social- and financial status is irrelevant, University is free for everyone. (If you have a citizenship)
n7warrior
I wish I lived in Sweden! I wouldn't have so much school debt. :(
We have our issues but I'm proud to be a part of giving people a chance at a good education as long as students behave in school.
somepersondoingsomethings
Don't let people fool youm. The US has a myriad of programs to help pay for school especially if you are poor.
It is not free. Just like healthcare here in Canada, it is publicly funded.
It's paid by our taxes. But that doesn't change the fact that attending an university doesn't cost a single krona (our currency) 1/2
Uni is free here in that sense. We pay one of the highest taxes in the world to achieve that with other things as well. I get your point 2/3
But going to an uni where it costs money versus going to an uni where it costs nothing is free to me. But yes it's ultimately paid by taxes
The danger of 'free to me' thinking is that it can easily end up as a "Tragedy of the Commons" scenario. Each society has to make it's (1)
Correction. It doesn't cost the student a single krona but someone somewhere is always paying for a good or service rendered unless they (1)
are employing slave labor. Even then there is medical, housing, clothing and food costs . Ain't nothing in life free without cost.
skylin05
Tired of this argument. Everyone know it's not literally free but it doesn't cost money at the point of access. It's a hell of a lot better
FreshWater13
My friend, that's the point of lifting together.
pangaea67
Sorry to nitpick but why did you need to spend $1.1k on a laptop?

Penguinsandbroadswords
Unless you pick a golden ticket degree that's hiring when you graduate, yes, this can be the case. When I started college in '02, 1/2
everyone was being told we needed teachers, nurses, and computer people. 4 years later so many people qualified that it lowered wages.

@orfdorf is right. This post is celebrating a guy's accomplishment, and the most-upvoted comment is negative. Imgur is a hatefest.

Harvard and unemployment are two words that usually don't go together.
@sleepynotsleazy and jokes are two things that definitely don't go together.

My thought exactly.
In sure there must be Ivy League middle/upper class folk whose parents paid for it all and yet they still don't work or aspire to achieve.
thr0wthrowthrowaway
Not working /= unemployed

Most western countries don't require superhuman efforts to do better than your parents, fix your crap America.
SolidusPliskin
Is having a minimum wage job in high school and having to study really hard considered superhuman? High schoolers don't have jobs in the UK?
He didn't need to go to superhuman efforts to do better, he did it because he wanted to own his achievement.
twominutesforhighsticking
Most of America doesn't either. That's the problem with systemic poverty, it tends to keep the same people/areas in poverty.
flamingflamingo
The problem is that a story like his is what Americans tend to admire, perpetuating this idea that you have to work and bleed for your dreams
superscout0233
He did more than just better than his parents. Most people couldn't get into or afford Harvard.
marsgoose
Didn't you just read they are immigrants, do you think they immigrated to US because they are stupid and don't know it's easier elsewhere?
Fahargo
The vast majority of people born into poverty will not stay there int he united states. It's up to us to help the rest
DrMcTouchy
It's still possible for a large portion of the population. You may not do what you want, but opportunity rarely arrives on your terms.
mrsmjb
Harvard costs between 40 and 60 grand a year. This *is* a bit of an extreme example.
ZOMGNO
It is! But it doesn't HAVE to be Harvard to be a higher education that pulls you further from poverty.
True, true
aclaec
Lol, neither does America
I was the first person in my family to go to college. My parents grew up poor and remain so. It took only the barest minimum effort...
...for me to get into college and eventually graduate. Unfortunately, I am still $100k in debt (my parents didn't pay anything), and...
...haven't made any payments because I can't seem to hold down a job or get full-time employment. The guy in the OP isn't typical and...
...neither am I.
American Dream is now looking more like a nightmare for the next generation.
Lmao. So dramatic.
It won't be that bad if people learn to seek work in in-demand fields, instead of some fluff job.
ThanosWasNotWrong
Yup. We have a fetish with "pulling ourselves up by our bootstraps". Yo I don't even have boots!
Neither did this kid?

I feel like if someone hasn't run themselves into the ground, people will think you didn't try hard enough. Even then you can still be lazy.
Storm5
Get you some then
TanithRosenbaum
Yea I wondered what was up with the "It should be hard, or it isn't earned" fetish. And the fact that no one sees that isn't working.
VikingInOz
If they don't see it they need to try harder! American dream
People see one story like this and figure it's the general case. It's the same reasoning behind the anti-vax stuff. Humans suck at stats
Nomtombouts
America doesn't either
DLTBGYDCU
The struggle to succeed in America has made us the strongest nation. It is best for us as humans to struggle and succeed.
Holy shit, I'm not sure why the downvotes. It's like people want everything handed out, with no challenges or hardship.
Look at the people that are 3rd generation welfare recipients. No incentive to get off your ass when you are given everything.
darkdragonempress
That's not true. Struggle is an aspect of life, but it's far more advantageous to remove as much as possible for at least the young. That 1
Look at all the people living on Dad and Grandad's trust fund and doing nothing with the opportunity.
That's a work ethic problem. There's plenty of people that had parents pay for their life and school and still worked hard.
They are few. The struggle for success is better. Ask the butterfly after he struggles to emerge from the cocoon.
Guy is impressive but there's plenty of people that are smart but it takes more time and effort for them to learn things they don't have if2
They have to work to survive and go to school. It's far more beneficial to nurture as much potential as possible. You get much better 3
Rewards that way. All struggle does is squander that potential. 4
Millions on welfare disagree. They are given food, housing, education and do nothing with the opportunities available to them.
Actually a large part of the problem is the huge donut hole that exists. Getting 50 bucks extra a month can disqualify you from hundreds 1
Lost me on this one. Is this a reply to one of my comments?
Of benefits. So you will cut back hours or turn down a raise because it will put you in a worse position. 2
We can't. We need more money to kill more brown people.
If you keep killing brown people, one day brown people are going to end. Then you won't need money anymore. So maybe this is the right path?
The military spending hike alone would pay for tuition free college. But hey, do you want the most educated citizens, or dead brown people?
25% of the military budget would fund a reverse income tax that would end poverty. And leave 2.5x china's military budget to play with.
Yup. The amount we spend on military hardware is pretty insane.
thatcrowyouknow
Ok, totally neglect welfare and a variety of things that are in place to help. The real killer here is violence bred into cultures
No shit? But why feed and educate people when you can buy fighter jets and bombs dude? Fighter jets are so much cooler than bread and books
Because we are trying to protect the right to live over the other amenities. Yes I agree I wish we had enough money and resources for every-
Thing, but that's partly because Europe is not contributing to help either. Yes they take in refugees, but then what? Will these people
TheProLoser
This story does not speak to all Americans being at a disadvantage, it speaks to the ability to do ANYTHING DESPITE your disadvantage.
Lilshadow48
My disadvantages are debilitating social anxiety and issues with depression. How do anything? I mean damn, I shake just saying hi.
Most places you don't need a superhuman effort because the people have decided they don't want to live around stupid sick people so the
govt helps you get started, then you pay taxes. Then everybody can see a Dr or get an education when they need to.
I just went to school and got my degree. If financial aid didn't pay for it, the deductions on my taxes did. It's silly to say the US doesnt
Cover education at all. They cover it pretty damn well, the only problem with it is they are slipping into quantity of quality in education

"Traveled the world..." I'm betting there's more to this
AVoiceOfReason
"So I could travel" is the right quote. Don't literally change the words and tense and misquote him for your idiotic point.
The entire post reads as occurring in the past, until "Today I graduated". Past to present.
zma123456
People who gloat about their own life usually say things that will get them more sympathy from others
warlord7
So he could travel the world. Hasn't yet, plans to. Which is why he worked his butt off.

I checked him, he lives in house worth $35K in a bad neighborhood in Youngstown, let the guy be proud he made it.

If you/your parents make under $60,000 a year (which is likely the case in this post), then tuition is free.
Canadiankittytitty
In Canada. Not the states
MichaelaWeasley
That is not true. My parents are dirt poor and I am in $13,000 worth of debt for school. I payed for the other $25,000
Don't see why this is being downvoted. Just stating a fact that in Canada school isn't free if you come from a low income family
He went to Harvard. Harvard has free tuition for low income students.
To specify: I mean at Harvard. Low income students get free tuition at Harvard.
0TheFirehawk0
Tha flippity-fuckin'-do-da?!...why didn't I know about this? I'm almost done with my in-state degree and it isn't free at all... :( oh well

randomfan276
I had financial security during uni, and I'm eternally thankful to my parents for providing that. So who knows? It's not that simple.
ZazzySayWhat
I think he was referring to rich people as opposed to thise who had the money for what they needed.
I think my point still stands. You don't have to be poor to appreciate what you have eg education. Not all rich people are entitled snobs.
You are right, but the comparison still stands. Odds are the more you work for something, financially/schoolwork, the more you will
TheYoungGod
This is gonna be super unpopular, but I feel like this is a bit over dramatized. I mean in college there's plenty of financial aid...
You definitely don't need to struggle that hard to get a laptop. Hell 150 hours at minimum wage is way more than a decent Toshiba laptop.
Over 2/3 of my class had a waiver for the SAT fee.
If you're at a really bad school they may not let you know the fee waiver is an option.
That's possible I guess... But my school was pretty shit. Three kids got stabbed during my time there. Also had a drive by and a shooter.
ommnoms
He also said he helped support his family with his part time job so maybe that's why
100% of my college was paid for. But I still had to work 50 hours a week to buy food, pay rent, computer, etc. Unless you can live off 1
Your parents, and have them provide the basic necessities of life, you can't just make it on student loans and financial aid. 2
Definitely. But that's not unusual. Everyone I knew worked for living costs. But finaid easily covered our books, laptops, software, etc.
Getting into one of the greatest universities on the planet should be that hard.
junkhead412
Harvard sets a race of students on a pedestal, a race that used to fight against segregation now they are having their own graduation to 1/2
Segregate themselves. harvad is far from great
maximuminnovationstevejobs
Hard academically but not hard in other ways.
MexicanRainbowSprinkles
I disagree. This person had to overcome major obstacles whereas a wealthier person would have greater access to resources and by >
Extension an easier time achieving their goals.
Also, the wealthy may also 'buy' their way in through a 'generous donation' to the school before applying.
FancyGiraffes
So what? Because rich people have it better, we should remove all disparity and become communist russia?
Iff so then it should be like that for everyone and it isn't so
It sucks, but he is a stronger person for it. I'm 32 and going to school with 21 yr old entitled brats. The things they complain about......
I feel like that's because it's what you're listening for. The vocal minority and all that.
Kind of hard not to hear it, I'm surrounded by it. Of course not all 21 yr olds are that way, but some of the brats I'm around need to know
struggle to understand and appreciate what they have.
SoapyMammaryMasturbation
I don't think struggling that hard makes you stronger. It's simply that only those that are strong enough can make it.
If not that, it atleast makes you appreciate what you accomplished more.
Everyone has a different and unique family setup. Life is hard and more people struggle than what you perceive.
What he probably means is lets make society more equal so less have to do this.
VisuallyDriven
You think if we don't have to work hard or strive for anything in life that is going to make society better? I think you don't have a clue..
I'm saying he shouldn't have had to give up his entire childhood in order to get higher education
Word.
tzap
I don't think one should have to work extra hard to have even the chance at getting good education.
USA is so incredibly unequal. Some get no chances and have to fight like crazy, some get everything. Struggle can be good, but not like that
StoptheInfamousElGuapo
look at what we have now: an entire generation of kids who are spoiled rotten, who have NEVER been forced to endure any hardship, never
forced to take ANY responsibility, who can't tolerate the tiniest bit of criticism and expect someone else to just give them what they want
This is just not true. Every generation ever felt that the nest one was useless.
Putting words in my mouth. I say it should/could be more fair from the get go, not that we should have NO struggle.

I struggle to finish HS while raising my family, because of that I'm a better person. If people don't struggle they won't appreciate life.
There are different levels of struggle. Today some have way too much, some almost none and some a normal amount. Should level playing field
I don't understand why this was downvoted....the harder you work for something, the more you appreciate it when you get it!
Probably people that have never worked hard for anything.

This is a very inapirational post, but one thing bothers me - a laptop for 150 work hours? More like 1500 where i live.
ToxicMolluscinity
1500 hours of work to buy a laptop?? Do you work as a slave mining blood diamonds or something?
kvakajek
Well, I guess if you put it that way, in my country we all do. How much money do you consider normal for a laptop?
ToxicMolluscinity
50 work hours for a minimum wage earner for a budget model. 150-300 hours for a high end gaming model.
kvakajek
Okey, i wouldn't even consider high-end stuff. Speak to me in dollars or euro and i will explain the difference to you.
BustyInnocent
I'm from Sweden and here ethnicity, social- and financial status is irrelevant, University is free for everyone. (If you have a citizenship)
n7warrior
I wish I lived in Sweden! I wouldn't have so much school debt. :(
BustyInnocent
We have our issues but I'm proud to be a part of giving people a chance at a good education as long as students behave in school.
somepersondoingsomethings
Don't let people fool youm. The US has a myriad of programs to help pay for school especially if you are poor.
ToxicMolluscinity
It is not free. Just like healthcare here in Canada, it is publicly funded.
BustyInnocent
It's paid by our taxes. But that doesn't change the fact that attending an university doesn't cost a single krona (our currency) 1/2
BustyInnocent
Uni is free here in that sense. We pay one of the highest taxes in the world to achieve that with other things as well. I get your point 2/3
BustyInnocent
But going to an uni where it costs money versus going to an uni where it costs nothing is free to me. But yes it's ultimately paid by taxes
ToxicMolluscinity
The danger of 'free to me' thinking is that it can easily end up as a "Tragedy of the Commons" scenario. Each society has to make it's (1)
ToxicMolluscinity
Correction. It doesn't cost the student a single krona but someone somewhere is always paying for a good or service rendered unless they (1)
ToxicMolluscinity
are employing slave labor. Even then there is medical, housing, clothing and food costs . Ain't nothing in life free without cost.

Tired of this argument. Everyone know it's not literally free but it doesn't cost money at the point of access. It's a hell of a lot better

Most western countries don't require superhuman efforts to do better than your parents, fix your crap America.
SolidusPliskin
Is having a minimum wage job in high school and having to study really hard considered superhuman? High schoolers don't have jobs in the UK?
WorldsSmallestMegaDick
He didn't need to go to superhuman efforts to do better, he did it because he wanted to own his achievement.
twominutesforhighsticking
Most of America doesn't either. That's the problem with systemic poverty, it tends to keep the same people/areas in poverty.
flamingflamingo
The problem is that a story like his is what Americans tend to admire, perpetuating this idea that you have to work and bleed for your dreams
superscout0233
He did more than just better than his parents. Most people couldn't get into or afford Harvard.

It is! But it doesn't HAVE to be Harvard to be a higher education that pulls you further from poverty.

America doesn't either
DLTBGYDCU
The struggle to succeed in America has made us the strongest nation. It is best for us as humans to struggle and succeed.
DrMcTouchy
Holy shit, I'm not sure why the downvotes. It's like people want everything handed out, with no challenges or hardship.
DLTBGYDCU
Look at the people that are 3rd generation welfare recipients. No incentive to get off your ass when you are given everything.
darkdragonempress
That's not true. Struggle is an aspect of life, but it's far more advantageous to remove as much as possible for at least the young. That 1
DLTBGYDCU
Look at all the people living on Dad and Grandad's trust fund and doing nothing with the opportunity.
darkdragonempress
That's a work ethic problem. There's plenty of people that had parents pay for their life and school and still worked hard.
DLTBGYDCU
They are few. The struggle for success is better. Ask the butterfly after he struggles to emerge from the cocoon.
darkdragonempress
Guy is impressive but there's plenty of people that are smart but it takes more time and effort for them to learn things they don't have if2

Millions on welfare disagree. They are given food, housing, education and do nothing with the opportunities available to them.

If you keep killing brown people, one day brown people are going to end. Then you won't need money anymore. So maybe this is the right path?
Gallus1985
The military spending hike alone would pay for tuition free college. But hey, do you want the most educated citizens, or dead brown people?
valen00
25% of the military budget would fund a reverse income tax that would end poverty. And leave 2.5x china's military budget to play with.

randomfan276
I think my point still stands. You don't have to be poor to appreciate what you have eg education. Not all rich people are entitled snobs.
ZazzySayWhat
You are right, but the comparison still stands. Odds are the more you work for something, financially/schoolwork, the more you will
TheYoungGod
This is gonna be super unpopular, but I feel like this is a bit over dramatized. I mean in college there's plenty of financial aid...

TheYoungGod
Definitely. But that's not unusual. Everyone I knew worked for living costs. But finaid easily covered our books, laptops, software, etc.

Getting into one of the greatest universities on the planet should be that hard.
junkhead412
Harvard sets a race of students on a pedestal, a race that used to fight against segregation now they are having their own graduation to 1/2
junkhead412
Segregate themselves. harvad is far from great
maximuminnovationstevejobs
Hard academically but not hard in other ways.
MexicanRainbowSprinkles
I disagree. This person had to overcome major obstacles whereas a wealthier person would have greater access to resources and by >

Extension an easier time achieving their goals.

Also, the wealthy may also 'buy' their way in through a 'generous donation' to the school before applying.
FancyGiraffes
So what? Because rich people have it better, we should remove all disparity and become communist russia?
fragtore
Iff so then it should be like that for everyone and it isn't so
ZazzySayWhat
It sucks, but he is a stronger person for it. I'm 32 and going to school with 21 yr old entitled brats. The things they complain about......
FreshWater13
I feel like that's because it's what you're listening for. The vocal minority and all that.
ZazzySayWhat
Kind of hard not to hear it, I'm surrounded by it. Of course not all 21 yr olds are that way, but some of the brats I'm around need to know
ZazzySayWhat
struggle to understand and appreciate what they have.
SoapyMammaryMasturbation
I don't think struggling that hard makes you stronger. It's simply that only those that are strong enough can make it.
ZazzySayWhat
If not that, it atleast makes you appreciate what you accomplished more.
fbutt09
Everyone has a different and unique family setup. Life is hard and more people struggle than what you perceive.
fragtore
What he probably means is lets make society more equal so less have to do this.
VisuallyDriven
You think if we don't have to work hard or strive for anything in life that is going to make society better? I think you don't have a clue..
FreshWater13
I'm saying he shouldn't have had to give up his entire childhood in order to get higher education
fragtore
Word.
tzap
I don't think one should have to work extra hard to have even the chance at getting good education.
fragtore
USA is so incredibly unequal. Some get no chances and have to fight like crazy, some get everything. Struggle can be good, but not like that
StoptheInfamousElGuapo
look at what we have now: an entire generation of kids who are spoiled rotten, who have NEVER been forced to endure any hardship, never
StoptheInfamousElGuapo
forced to take ANY responsibility, who can't tolerate the tiniest bit of criticism and expect someone else to just give them what they want
fragtore
This is just not true. Every generation ever felt that the nest one was useless.
fragtore
Putting words in my mouth. I say it should/could be more fair from the get go, not that we should have NO struggle.
CoderWithoutCaffeine
I struggle to finish HS while raising my family, because of that I'm a better person. If people don't struggle they won't appreciate life.
fragtore
There are different levels of struggle. Today some have way too much, some almost none and some a normal amount. Should level playing field
StoptheInfamousElGuapo
I don't understand why this was downvoted....the harder you work for something, the more you appreciate it when you get it!
CoderWithoutCaffeine
Probably people that have never worked hard for anything.
fragtore
This is not a truth
