I've been drinking for 17+ years. Sometimes good times, sometimes brutally bad times. I've tried harm reduction, AA, out patient programs, therapy...you name it but with no lasting success. The time has finally come to face this head on and go to an in-patient rehab for 7 weeks.

Wish me luck everyone. And if you are struggling please reach out to me, I would love to help if I can or just talk to people while I'm in there. Also, know that there are always next steps to take.

If this post gets traction I will willingly send updates on my recovery. Have a happy holiday everyone and stay safe! (I may not have my phone back before then so I'm saying it now)

Edit: thanks everyone so much for the support! I know there are others out there like me. Take care of yourselves too!

Great choice! Stay with it.

Well Done @OP! You've got this! You've got work to do ahead of you - but you've already taken the hardest step! Congratulations!

You can do it! Rest, get back up, try. Whatever needs to be done. You deserve it more than anyone.

4 years sober here. Focus on living sober instead of focusing on not drinking. Send me a message if you want/need to talk

I’m proud of you, @OP.

Not to douche on it, gl with rehab. But you'll probably need to go back to AA afterward and continue to work the program.

I plan to use AA to keep me on track. I have a phone full of contacts and a great set of meetings I like in my city.

It's much better than you think You'll be with people that won't judge you but rather support you. You're off to great places my friend!

Good luck! You’ve got this! I just hit my 9 year sober anniversary, it’s a difficult journey, but it does get easier! Stay strong!

That's how I finally conquered my inner demons. I was a heavy/binge drinker for roughly as long as you. I finally did rehab and [1/2]

now I'm nearly six years sober. You can do this! [2/2]

You picked a good time, seriously. Xmas and New Years are especially difficult times for Alcoholics with all the celebrations happening.

I went through it this year after landing in the hospital. Took 6mos and therapy to rebuild&feel any positivity, but if I did it, anyone can

You have to treat the addiction and what caused it, be prepared for a long, hard, but very worthwhile process. You got this!

Good on you OP! Best place to start. You'll have the best support.

Goog for you!! Courage doesn’t mean lack of fear. Courage means being scared shitless and doing the best thing anyway.

Listen friend. I've been an alcoholic for 12 years. Today marks day 19 of sobriety. It gets easier. It feels amazing to wake up every day 1/

Not being hung over. I crave it only in certain instances but I keep busy to distract me. I promise you can beat this.

My good friend just did this a few months ago. He's much happier on the other side. Also we actually game together now instead of making /1

Plans that he never follows through on. Ive sat around many an afternoon in the past. We played AOE3 yesterday and had some fun! You got it!

Remember. One day at a time. You can do this.

Worked for me, 6 yrs sober so far.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yay, rehab saved my life. Have 11 years 7 months clean and sober.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I’ve been. 22 weeks. Best decision. You got this!

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Don’t get me wrong it’s still hard. I backslid they day after I went home. But I learned how to stop.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The Sinclair Method is how I stopped. There's a TED talk. And a book called The Cure for Alcoholism by Roy Eskapa.

Best of luck of your journey OP. Remember addiction is a symptom of other problem(s). Make sure you find and address that.

4 years ago | Likes 115 Dislikes 0

That is actually not true. Addiction is something that happens in the brain. While most addicts have something that drives them to substance

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Addiction is not necessarily tied to outside things. Especially for those that start using at a young ag.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sometimes the main problem with addiction is just the addiction and most other problems just seem to go away with sobriety. Sometimes.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That's an immersive part of the program I picked. And I totally agree. Thank you!

4 years ago | Likes 44 Dislikes 0

If you don't mind me asking, what program did you decide in?

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Have a buddy who finally quit after years of trying because of one of these programs. Proud of you and you've got this!

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

*Problems* is probably the wrong word, "other things" maybe. But I hope you know what i mean. Well done on taking +ve steps, be proud

This^: For me it was the person I was living with, an abusive asshole. After moving out I was able to stop. Relapses happen but it's better!
