Man: “Well if you was born in Pakistan, originally from Pakistan you must have been kidnapped by now.”

Woman: “Kidnapped by you?”

Man: “…You are in Canada so I cannot touch you.”

He's basically trying to say he loves Canada and it's laws preventing men from kidnapping women. That's why he's in Canada and not Pakistan.

Yeah, I think we already know that Pakistan would be a bad place to catch a ride with a stranger.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This is super creepy, but he does say "Great is Canada," so maybe he meant that these laws are good and this is why he came to Canada. He still shouldn't have said it this way though. It's hard to tell what he meant without more of the conversation.

2 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 2

Yup, English as a second language can be a bit confusing and some nuance is lost.

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

This video seriously needs context. I tried to find the full thing, but all I seem to find are videos about Uber pulling out of Pakistan. I feel like this was shortened to incite outrage because that's how you get those views these days. It seems more like a warning about Pakistan to me.

Holy shit, and I thought *I* overshare.

TMI. Calm down.

2 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 2

So you overshare about murderous or criminally minded thoughts?

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 27

Obviously that's not what they meant.

2 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

This seems a little out of contexty tbh.

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Everyone going off about this.....but we have no context for the rest of the conversation. Yes, from what we see it seems SUPER creepy. However, every time I see only a tiny clip, and not a longer form video for the actual context, I get VERY skeptical. Do not assume or leap to conclusions without the full story, kids.

2 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 2

I can't tell if they had been having a discussion about the differences in how women are treated between the two countries and we're only seeing the VERY objectionable and honest description of how she would be treated in Pakistan, or if he was creepily trying to compliment her by saying she was 'cute enough' someone in Pakistan would have kidnapped her by now.

2 years ago | Likes 93 Dislikes 0

Right. It seems like English is his second language, so unsure of if it’s a very rapey “I would kidnap you if I thought I’d get away with it”

Or “You need to be careful as around the globe there are people and places where if you get in a cab by yourself, you’ll be kidnapped”

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Ya, I'm going to wait before I bring out my pitchfork. It could all be what you said, or language barrier, or bad editing. Idk. Either way, it's sad that that would happen to a woman in his country and a lot of the world still. It's ridiculous women are so oppressed in 2024.

2 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 0

I doubt it's a language barrier. I have no doubt he means it when he says she'd be treated that way in his country.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Same here. I don’t know why this topic was even brought up in the first place though because it IS creepy regardless.

2 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

Missing context to the conversation perhaps.

2 years ago | Likes 108 Dislikes 8

It does sound like a warning/ stay safe out there + language disconnect. Maybe it should be phrased as, you could get kidnapped by a cabbie if you did this in an unsafe area. (Also, my totally uneducated guess is he also said some mean judgemental stuff to her).

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I agree. He may, be a horrible person, or we may be hearing a snippet of conversation out of context. I will wait before I hate.

2 years ago | Likes 45 Dislikes 2

I've witnessed a strikingly similar conversation while headed to a place where rape is often ignored. To summarize: My girlfriend was arranging for a taxi, and the driver refused by saying "no, I will rape you". She pointed at me and said "my husband is coming too". The driver then accepted.

What actually happened is that the driver tried to communicate that a single young woman wasn't safe travelling alone there, but a significant language and cultural barrier turned his advice into a threat.

2 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

There are also a couple of weird cuts/jumps in the middle that make me think more info is missing.

2 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 1

unfortunately women don't get the "wow this is getting terrifying, I better start filming" bits on camera.

2 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 3

In much of the world, a woman on her own or dressed immodestly is an open target for rape. Learn about where you're going- North Africa can be horrific for single women travelers, or dressed in shorts, tank top, and separated from men. Western women can't even conceive of the callous "She's a whore so I can use her" attitude in much of the world. I caution travelers frequently to be careful about dress and being without a man in these places.

I interpret this out of context portion of a conversation differently. I don't think he was saying he wanted to kidnap her, or anyone else. I think he was discussing how unsafe Pakistan is for women and how much better Canada is. But the Internet is going to interpret it as angrily as possible, and probably doxx him and get him deported.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I think this is more of a language barrier issue than him actually threatening her

So... are you suggesting that the correct play is "we should allow creeps to remain in positions of trust/power that they could abuse, in case they do something worse in retaliation for losing that position"? Or just a joke and it's not very clear? Because if it's not a joke, I... I'm not sure that's a very good argument to be honest

Quick tip: read it in the tone of the comment. Can you BELIEVE someone saying that sentence with any seriousness whatsoever? Just casual flippancy? In any case, it also is structured like a joke with the punchline following a rhetorical question. It's rhetorical because the punchline answers immediately after. Classic steps 1 and 2 of a joke.

I think he genuinely thought that was a "Haha compliment" where he genuinely thought it'd be a goofy "fun" thing to say. I have met some people like that, and it is genuinely disturbing. It's like that Boomer Humor where they "joke" about their parents beating them if they did the same thing a millennial just did. Or some variation, and somehow don't see how disgusting that is.

because in his unfortunate Islamic upbringing mind, this is for her own good, to "warn" her. Funny that if that woman is younger than 25, there is a good chance she would go to a protest that justify guys that are way worse than him, in the way they treat women and other minorities,

Having plenty of weird Uber/Lyft/Taxi drivers over the years, this is the sort of thing you start talking about after a few minutes of getting to know each other. There's a reason it has a weird cut and stars with "well if you were born in Pakistan". But of course "how are women treated in Pakistan" contains too much historical and religious context history over the much more clickbait "Uber Driver tells girl he'll kidnap her".

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

and why does she laugh with the guy.... she should report this to his boss...

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 6

Because it’s another safety behavior that men mistake for agreement/consent. Ever see a movie where a dangerous psycho is holding the heroes at gunpoint, and one of the guys tries to start a conversation and just agrees/is sympathetic to everything the crazy gunman says?
Yeah- that’s a skill most women learn before age 13 and we use it ALL THE TIME with men. It’s De-escalation.

Walking in on a conversation that may have started long before it gets recorded is going to be weird. Hence, it is okay for you to judge it with what little you know at the time.

2 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Have you met men?

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

duuuude men are creepy as fuck in general. I took a lot of taxis in my teen yrs (lived in MTL) and I could write a book about the disturbed nasty shit taxi drivers told me. I had at least two tell me that it was a shame i was a bit overweight (i was 14-15yo), a few made advances, some talked about their sex life or sex in general.

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

I know not all men are like that, and i did take a lot of taxis and not all rides were with creepy dudes. Some were really nice and had some memorable conversations. But yes, men, if a woman is a stranger to you, dont tell her how she would be so beautiful if she lost a bit of weight, or talk about your sex life in general.

Did people forget that women have been property for thousands of years and had never gotten rights until recently?

2 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 2

I had a female friend travel to Egypt and Turkey about 10 years ago - something she said she'd never do again. She said that she was constantly harassed by guys whenever she went out. According to her, if a woman was traveling without her father, husband or brother, they assumed she was a hooker.

2 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 1

I hate making any sort of excuse for this behavior but this is absolutely true... Unfortunately when people move from those countries where this is acceptable, the behavior isn't addressed or educated out of the individual. "What do you mean we have to TELL people that kidnapping/rape is bad!?!?"

2 years ago | Likes 67 Dislikes 0

This is what I hate about allowing immigration from countries where women aren't even close to equal. Every single person with that attitude who lives here makes me less equal. Why is that ok? We should have screening to identify people with the strongest sexist attitudes and the most likely to be violent, and then not let them in. Others who are teachable, should be taught. Otherwise equality for me and every other woman and most likely every LGBTQ+ person gets further away every day.

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

It’s happened a lot in the EU with new, refugee populations from some middle eastern countries. These people aren’t the ones who left their country in search of education & assimilation into a different country. They are people who were FINE with the old customes etc, thank you very much, and would’ve stayed there happily if war hadn’t detroyed their homes.
In this case, yeah, as their new country, it’s necessary to actually have community education about what is legal/acceptable and what’s not

2 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

That argument totally misses the point that plenty of rape happened before the immigrants arrived by non-immigrants. Pointing a finger like this at refugees usually hides trhe crimes of the native population that by this measure should be held to a higher standard

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 8

No. Addressing the need to educate new arrivals to the culture/laws of a new country is a completely different topic. Just like treating a blister from
new shoes is a different need than going to the doctor to surgically correct bunions.
Both are problems, both are painful, but treating one does not preclude addressing the other.
The reported assaults by new refugees that we are discussing are statistically significant because the assaults were confirmed. It’s not xenophobic hearsay. 1/2

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's increasingly happening in Canada too. We had a very high profile case of a refugee raping and murdering a 13 year old girl in a popular local park and the defense was basically 'well according to his culture the girl could be viewed as overly sexual and leading him on'. Naturally people were outraged and public sentiment on immigration is taking a hard right turn in recent years

2 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

with good fucking reason. Those animals can fuck right off back to the shithole they crawled out of.

2 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

The extreme tolerance of intolerance will ironically breed intolerance. There is a limit to how much respect needs to be given to a culture. Need to wear a headpiece? Fine. Want to rape someone? No. And by giving people passes or leniency simply due to fear of seeming intolerant just increases the number of people committing hate crimes or becoming xenophobic

2 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

I hate this because I'm Canadian, we're taught to be forgiving and helpful/supportive and that helping people is important, then the ones we help go and do stuff like this and treat us poorly. I hate to say it, but get the fuck out of my country.

True. But since I got Long Covid? Sometimes I gotta choose between return in the cart or returning home.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I don't know, pretty sure some serial killers like Ted Bundy or Edmund Kemper would return the cart so they can fit in without attracting to much attention. But then again some douchebags don't care enough about basic courtesy to do that.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh, bullshit. Not that stupid shopping cart test. Big grocery pushes this shit so they don't have to pay people to get the carts around the parking lot, saving them money. I put the cart in a corral because they can roll and hit people's cars, not because of some stupid morality test being used to manipulate people and make money for the chain.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I remember back in the 80's, in Southern California, one of the big chains (Ralph's, which is now part of Kroger), used to have cart corrals spit out quarters to put your cart back (and it didn't cost a quarter to take one). People STILL didn't do it, so you had kids and sometimes homeless cleaning up carts in the parking lot, but I imagine that is potentially insurance claims waiting to happen.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

ALDI has these

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

... that's a statement of your morality though. You put it back because you don't want other people to suffer from your inaction.

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

Correct, it is, but it isn't the reason used by this "Test" ... which says you're a good little drone if you save the grocery store money by doing their work for them. I think they need to employ more people with low skill capability, collecting carts, instead of guilt tripping people with this stupid "Test."

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 9

...a little drone? Dude what the fuck are you on about

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Pretty clear, isn't it? The reason to return a cart is so it doesn't damage other people's cars, not to save the grocery store money by having less lower skilled employees to gather them. These "Tests" of whether you're a good person unless you do this or that are just fucking annoying. Just be a good person, and don't buy into this propaganda promoted to save stores money.

He turned around and dropped me off at my location, then asked if I had a weapon for coyotes and wildlife... I did not. I ran into one other person on my hike, but luckily no dangerous wildlife

Every single time you hear a religious person (mainly christians and muslims) say "if you don't believe in the holy book, you have no moral compass" it is implied that the only thing that stops their urges to harm others is the fear of punishment.

Most religious people think that the threat of eternal damnation is the only thing keeping civilization for falling into looting & pillaging

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

They're probably right. A really shocking number of people are only kept in check through an appeal to a higher authority and the belief in a righteous reward for good behaviour. As a society I think we're in the process of rediscovering truths that past cultures had figured out a long time ago.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I’m coming to learn that a large reason society is stable and the reason why religions still exist is because a large percentage of people, maybe half or even more, would do terrible things if there weren’t any rules or consequences.

2 years ago | Likes 78 Dislikes 6

We are animals from the same planet as all other animals. It was like that for most of history. Force rules. Even in modern societies, lyws are enforced by, well, force. Police are just mercenaires. We all are. We get paid to do a job. If you don't get paid, you have to survive. You have to find food, shelter and procreate. Who does not do those things, does not pass the genes.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"With or without religion, good people can behave well and bad people can do evil; but for good people to do evil - that takes religion." - Steven Weinberg

I'll just stick with the law.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

The question is, how much of that is precisely because religions and laws are preventing people and societies from having to learn how to behave and live together.
I find religious people often to be underequipped to tackle such questions without deferring to a moral authority. And experiments (and history) have shown that humans readily delegate their ethical responsibility to laws, lawmakers and authority.

It's to me a bit like saying, "Toddlers falling over while trying to walk just shows >

2 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

why we as a society have decided to move around on electrical wheelchairs."

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I mean as much as I detest religion—I mean I really really hate it, it is a cancer on human civilization and a poison to rational thought—I think many people are really just too stupid, lazy, and innately immoral to handle the responsibility of creating the personal code of ethics that every atheist must invent for themself.

I genuinely want to do good and help others, not to please a god, but to advance society and to foster a positive and supportive environment.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

So yes I entirely agree with you.

That being said I don’t think religion is the only way to assert morals and just laws, it’s just the easiest.

We are slipping closer and closer to a secular society. Religions erode because they can’t change without losing their message, but science never changes, only advances.

If we can just stop killing one another to explore more art, science, and environmentalism, we might just stumble into an age of enlightenment

Your asking a valid question which every downvoter has lazily or cowardly avoided. So ill just flat out say his citizen status has zero bearing, it doesnt as it doesnt prevent citizens of his host nation from doing repugnant shit. But folks like to dabble in otherism when its vague enough.

Ehh this is a pretty lazy whataboutist attempt at devil advocate, ya would had better luck if ya had found a cultural tie for that practice. I know "kidnapping brides" is a thing in some cultures which doesnt condone it but it atleast explains the comment.

I think what the driver said was 9000 kinds of horrible, but what does his citizenship have to do with anything? That was my point.

I try not to be racist but I am willing to be bigoted in some areas; e,g. if your society was so great why are you here now??

This, alas, can also apply to me as I flee back to Japan (if they take me) this or next decade if indeed we really start going fascist here . . .

It's not bigotry if the place is an absolute shithole, and plenty of people are more than willing to confirm this about their place of origin.

We are already fascist here: It's left-wing, identitarian fascism. Courtesy of Obama and Biden's staff, since Biden is out to lunch.
