A man from village Velyka Hlyusha, Volyn region, Ukraine, who was in the Soviet army and declared missing, was found by a member of the expedition, Andriy Kadun, who searched for Afghanistan's aquifers.

The man is believed to be Ihor Bilokurov who was in the Soviet army and disappeared in Afghanistan in the province of Kandahar on April 9 1988. After waiting and searching for 20 years, his mother came to terms, believed him dead and installed a symbolic grave stone for him. Ten more years passed.

Then an expedition that sought for aquifers in Afghanistan, found him.
"The man could not speak Ukrainian, we talked through the interpreter. He told us he was from Volyn. He did not remember his name. He said he was called Amreddin, he converted to Islam, " said Andriy Kadun, a Ukrainian geophysicist. "But after we parted the translator said that maybe he did it for his own safety."
In Ukraine, Andriy contacted the Afghanistan veteran organisation, and they understood at once who the man was. There were three men from Volyn missing in Afghanistan, but one was later ascertained dead and the other one disappeared in a different region. It had to be Ihor Bilokurov.
There was a flood in the museum to Afghan soldiers last year and strangely enough, only Ihor Bilokur photo was damaged.
His convoy was under severe enemy fire when he disappeared. Probably he was concussed and captured. The mother said that he always wanted to be a soldier, since he was little.
She still can't be 100 per cent sure it's him but Ihor friends and family recognised him.
Ihor can be home in a month or two. He will be ransomed from the captivity and sent to Ukraine. The villagers promised to throw quite a party for him and his mother only wants to hug him once again.

His mother went through such an emotional rollercoaster, poor lady.
Grillparzer
I understand his family's pain, but what if he doesn't want to be rescued?
Cigfa95
That old lady broke my heart
mplshipster
Isn't that how you become a spy?
knotch2

Ravenbreaker
Wait.. he's a captive, but they let him have an AK?
Cheomesh
He looks awfully young for someone who should be about 50.

If this is real what an amazing story. Best episode of long lost family ever. Get on it davina.
OldnFatBobba
I don't think anyone is ready to fully acknowledge the damage done to this man. I would be utterly amazed if he could reintegrate well.
TheGhostofElizabethShue
I really don't see the likeness. His eyes seem too close together, nose and ears don't seem the same, and he looks way younger than 50.
spoileddentist
Imagine they bring home stranger to the old lady...

Valthorix
Can't wait to see the news report of him getting executed for turning traitor-i mean tragic heart attack
Magpiebones
The guy doesn't look anything like someone who disappeared as an adult 30 years ago. More like 30yrs old right now.
Asteroidrules
Yeah I say get a DNA test.
laxgirl94
Imagine the guy is actually not from Ukraine. From the look of that village, he will be trading of hell for another.

Did anyone else read this as slightly satirical? I felt like it was either a joke or a veiled attempt at exposing propaganda

They should play his favorite music from before when he comes home. Music can jog a memory like you'd not believe. Favorite smells, too.

Also, for a good time, donate old mp3 players full of Glenn Miller, Django Reinhardt and Benny Goodman to old folks' homes.

Which was actually ripped off an Israeli TV show...

He didn't forget who he was though
allibaster12
Umm, good luck. If he converted and just showed up out of nowhere to be found and is now going home.... hope it's not all an ISIS plan
MetSoh
There's literally a show about this exact situation. First 3 seasons of Homeland
allibaster12
Never seen it. Heard good things tho.

Converted to Islam for safety? Good luck with apostasy.

maybe got amnesia from concussion during fighting and now doesn't remember anything of his earlier life and started new?

Or he was allergic to getting his head chopped off.

I'm sure carrying AK47 can work better than epipen for such emergencies
