Ahhh slatterys! Not far from me :)

isn't that the stuff that makes you have explosive shits?

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Pretty sure this is in Whitfield Manchester, 5 mins from me. Amazing cake shop, chocolates and cafe

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I haven't seen diet Ice cream in a while but it can end up having more carbs then regular.Doctors always said to watch that stuff carefully

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

As a type 2 diabetic if I could enjoy things in moderation I wouldn't be a diabetic you dumbass.

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yeah when my little brother 1st got juvenile diabetes we all ate a lot of sugar-free lollies & stuff with him. So much diarrhoea.

3 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 1

What kind of unholy concoction is "diabetic chocolate"?

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

does diabetic chocolate mean chocolate withouth carbohydrates? because those are just as bad as diet coke basicly

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I had a pack of diabetic biscuits a roommate stole once. She ate the whole lot. I immediately felt sorry for her. Instant karma.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They're right. First thing I learned in diabetes club was not to buy diabetic chocolate, jam, sweets etc. And I'm supposed to tell everyone

3 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

Depends what it is. Read labels, count carbs. Don't vilify artificial sweeteners for no reason

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This is bullshit. Real chocolate and cocoa butter contain virtually no trans fats. You can sweeten chocolate with a wide range of >

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

Tons of saturated fat in chocolate though

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Saturated fat is nowhere near as bad for you as trans fat. But yeah. It's not a low-fat food.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

sweeteners that are considered wholesome but aren't sugar.

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

This isn't slatterys in Prestwich Manchester is it?

3 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

yes

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I was wondering the same thing!

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's a throwback thing, with old insulin sweet stuff was much more problematic so when I was a kid there was still a place for it. but these

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 6

days you just build it into your diet/regime, no worries. Just that old advice dies hard especially in the more informal folk advice side

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 6

if you're diabetic, just find something else to eat than chocolate. it's unfair, but that's life. it's often unfair. just accept it

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In moderate amounts, cocoa is good for you. In high sugar chocolate, the good is outweighed by the bad, but it tastes great.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

where can I find sluttery chocolate

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

As a person who lives with T1D, please give us real chocolates. They are much more satisfying than artificially sweetened chocolates.

3 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

Real chocolate is bitter af. You can buy less bitter cacao butter buttons. They're pale cream color and are really tame compared to 100% bar

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That, and 'sugar-free' is never carb free. I remember someone telling me how he got sugar-free icecream, we could eat as much as he wanted..

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Health wise that's in the same vein as the people who take the fat blockers then pig out for the night.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I wouldn't know much about those, but excess is excess. With "sugar free", the carb content is often the same/comparable to normal varieties

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

While sorbitol and maltitol end with -tol it sounds like ALL, which is what is going to come out of you, all you've ever eaten.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If it really “offers no benefit” then nobody would buy it anyway.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The issue isn't the artificial sweeteners. These can be a good solution for diabetics, the issue is that it's still full of carbs and fats

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Never heard of "diabetic chocolate" but I'm guessing it is like "clean coal"

3 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

It's like clean coal of you substituted some of the carbon for more uranium.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's like low-fat peanut butter. It sounds good for you but it's filler and sugar.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

No, it's more like the difference between regular Coca-Cola and Diet Coke. Unhealthy in different ways, AND tastes weird.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's my approach for ice cream. Don't have it often but when I do I get the real stuff. Not the shite in all the lower calorie options.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

im a diabetic for over 20 years and i have never heard of diabetic chocolate. if they could remove gluten from chocolate tho that'd be great

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I used to go to Slattery as a treat when I was a kid. Good to see it’s still there 30 years later!

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My nutritionist said dark chocolate in moderation is ok for my beetus.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So how about the other sweeteners like aspartame, saccharin, sucralose and the likes?

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Anything that tastes sweet sends signals to the pancreas to release insulin in order to get the glucose it is expecting. 1/2

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Since there is no glucose it just remains in the body, creating a sense of hunger and causes you to eat more than you should. 2/2

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Anecdotal evidence, but I've been drinking a 12 pack of diet dr pepper or coke zero a day since 2019, every day at work. I'm still alive.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Aspartame is bad, especially for inflammation (ppl with fibro, etc.) and the rest are argued over fiercely. Monk Fruit extract = great. I ->

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 6

There is zero evidence of this

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

use sugar-free jello and protein powder with sucralose but in moderation. Stevia is one of the less contested ones that's yummy.

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

I used to work at the Sugarless Shack in San Luis Obispo, CA. I was a former fatty, minoring in nutrition, and did my best to educate the

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

bovine masses that waddled into the place, ordering mountains of high-fat, sugarless soft-serve…thinking they were doing themselves a favor.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They are right. Diabetic chocolate contains carbohydrates still which you have to inject insulin for if your Type 1. May as well have real.

3 years ago | Likes 204 Dislikes 7

My husband, a T1D, agrees.

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

We are at a point where type 1 diabetics like myself can eat pretty much whatever we want as long as we do the proper amount of insulin.

3 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

It's been like this sinse the 90s. When this new way of care came out I immediately ate an entire pie to myself.

3 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

There are other solutions out there other than sugar alcohols! Even solutions that don't require alot of carbs. Choc zero is a good one

3 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 0

Thanks for the info. I hadn't heard of them before and will look into this.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm a fan of choc zero for keto. Never got kicked out of ketosis so far with it.

3 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

Their stuff is yummy. If I ever need something sweet

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Same. Love their products

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Being Type 1 is wild sometimes because people will assume you can't eat something because you usually don't and then you're like "nah, 1/

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

you guys don't get it, I'm in a cheesecake mood today" and whip out your magic pen and just go to town. (I'm oversimplifying, of course) 2/2

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

You could definetly make a cheesecake that is diabetic friendly

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Depends on the sugars, sukrin can absolutely be eaten by diabetics.

3 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

So can real sugar. Sugar alcohols are not a free-for-all. It’s still absorbed.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

It is absorbed, but not digested

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It goes straight through you

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The body can only use glucose, and it isn't able to break sukrin (Erythritol) into glucose so it comes out of you intact.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

sorbitol:

Also PSA: Xylitol is poisonous for dogs. Don't let your dog eat chewing gum or candy with xylitol. Not that they should eat gum or candy.

they bought 5lbs, but they only ate about 20 gummy bears.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Someone I hate, you say? Hmm... what a coincidence, I do know people I hate.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There is a video on YouTube from the user LAbeast who posted a video about this. It's hilarious.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I did not know this was a thing. I feel bad by laughing but oh that was a deep healthy soul cleansing laugh

3 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 0

A gummi for your soul

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

One year I had a cold with an ugly cough. I was taking cough syrup, using cough drops, and soothing my throat with breath mints. 1/

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

All three were sugar-free variants. All three uses sorbitol. It took me a week to figure out why the cold was making me spend hours in 2/

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

the bathroom as well. I avoid sorbitol as much as I can now. 3/3

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I almost tried this cleanse when in the military trying to meet weight. Instead I did all the other ways and welp now I’m afraid to diet.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If anyone DOES want to see a video of the after-effects, LA Beast did a video of him eating the entire bag. Man does love his science.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's... uh... colorful and not TOO obscene

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, fie on that. Alcohol sugars eaten in excess is no bueno.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's a shame they stopped selling those.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I've been searching for this image for a while now. I've referred to it several times since my partners new job at a smoothie place.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I don't think this actually happened. But even if true, it's messed up that he let them go to the construction workers

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

Ya sorbitol is a natural laxitive. We use it very sparingly at work (chocolatier) and in as small quantities as possible.

3 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

Should also be written on the packaging that too much can have this effect.

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

In the EU that's the case.

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

As soon as I saw "Oh man... words can not express" I knew EXACTLY what that review was. Classic!

3 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

I forgot about the one who brought them to work. That epic never made it to print. The sharer should be publicly shamed, had been warned .

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Totally! The friend didn't believe, made her decision, endured the consequences. But the sister... Hopefully she warned everyone beforehand?

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

???

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Why eat FIVE POUNDS of that crap? That amount alone will upset your intestines, never mind induce vomiting

3 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 18

Upset intestines? Well, that's one way to put it. https://youtu.be/sMjgaa5j_LE

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

He didn't eat five pounds. He purchased a 5lb bag and ended up giving away 99% of it. It's right there in the text ?

3 years ago | Likes 40 Dislikes 0

Way I understand it, he bought five pounds but only ate about 20 bears.

3 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Bought five pounds, rather than ate, I assume - see down the post where they say "99% of a 5 pound bag left".

3 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

LA beast here. Have a nice day!

3 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Can relate, only with sugar free Ricola.

3 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

My favorite part is “men on roofs crossing their legs contemplating if they can make it down the ladder or if they should just jump”

3 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

*staring at the gutter intensifies*

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That would work.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Haribo Sugar free gummy bears use maltitol, not sorbitol to replace sugar.

3 years ago | Likes 138 Dislikes 0

mal- is the prefix for bad, right? No wonder!

3 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Malitol can still have the laxative effect, though. Source: Have diabetic mother and have been trying to find candy she can eat.

3 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

I like the Quest line of candy, preferably the peanut butter cups. You can make stuff with allulose or erythritol.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Avoid stuff with maltodextrin, polydextrose or isomalt (IMO) stuff.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Consider melting unsweetened chocolate and mixing in pure Stevia. The stevia can taste a bit "chalky" on its own but the chocolate fixes it.

3 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Stevia works best when enhancing existing sweetness, so it's worth using it with a sugar alcohol. Erythritol doesn't have a laxative effect.

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Mango. At least personally I'll take that over any candy you can find when it's available.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This is the one that gave me that nightmare death on the toilet feeling.

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Nurse here. Maltitol is a sugar alcohol that, like sorbitol, has a laxative effect. They're basically substituting the same thing.

3 years ago | Likes 116 Dislikes 1

I have no problems with Butanetetrol/Erythritol though.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Erythritol doesn't ferment in the gut, so no laxative issues.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

From experience, maltitol gummy bears were much worse than other sorbitol candies I've had

3 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

IT Manager here. Maltitol is approximately twice as sweet per volume so has less digestive impact.

lol...I can see how announcing myself was arbitrary. I did it because we use sugar alcohols as laxatives, but didn't connect it in the post.

3 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 1

It's okay. I'm not actually a foreign affairs director :( I'm a fraud!

3 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

At least you have a sense of humor, good on ya!

3 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Totally believable and not exaggerated at all and if true totally not written by a person with severe IBS who dared eat 5 lbs of candy. Ugh

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 37

Okay. Eat an ounce of sugar-free candy and let us know how you feel. Just don’t go for a drive or anything.

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 3

Add this to your amazon wishlist and share it with us. We will buy you those gummies so you can try them

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

They didn't eat all 5 pounds, dude. They bought a 5lb bag and gave away 99% of it. Read.

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

"... after eating about 20 of these..." Learn to read, my brother in Christ.

3 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 1

Still bs. These are the same type of people who claim “I took a single bite of Mexican/Indian food and now my butt is a rocket” nonsense

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 12

/r/confidentlyincorrect :)

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It is well known to be a laxative.

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I found 90% cocoa chocolate at Aldi today. With that much cocoa, there's not much room for anything bad!

3 years ago | Likes 579 Dislikes 4

The Aldi Choceur brand of chocolate is very nice.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ive been hunting for that kind of purity. Must be so nice and bitter.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A few nanograms of some poisons can kill you, so it's never a 0% chance of death

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I absolutely ❤️ 90% chocolate

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

It's a tricky balance with those higher %, at least from my experience. 90% was awful, but 100% was...so bitter it was good?-

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

-It's like 70-90% confused my tongue or something.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I think, though, the appreciation for that requires a unique mind set. You can’t go into that if your looking for a candy. It’s More savory.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There's also no room far anything tasty!!

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

To put things in perspective, maybe I should explain that I've got diabetes and I find things with much sugar in easily too sweet.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Also I drink things like coffee and tea with no sugar at all.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Tesco do a 75% and an 84% cocoa bar. They're pretty bloody good.

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

85 is my favorite, but you can get 100% also were I live.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Inb4 you are dog

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

... or pleasurable. For me anyway.

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I used to grab the 85%-90% bars at Aldi during monthly grocery runs in Uni. American studying abroad in Dundee.

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Abertay or Uni of Dundee? My guess is Abertay (I like guessing games)

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

? Dundee - I was on exchange for a year from U of South Carolina. I remember I stayed over in Tay Mills, so an easy walk from everything.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Damn. What made you choose Dundee? (If you don't mind me asking.)

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I knew I wanted to study in Scotland, and my home university had an exchange program with Dundee, Strathclyde, and U of Edinburgh 1/2

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I once ate a hamburger

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Lindt 90% is literally my favorite chocolate bar. So good!

3 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 1

Lindt chocolate is the bessssssssst. Favorite of all kinds

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

What if the other 10% was rat poison? Didn't think about that huh?

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

That’s like eating bitter chalk.

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Idk why but dark chocolate makes me sneeze when I eat it lol

3 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Research shows the response to chocolate, sneezing, and sex stiumlate the same part of the brain.

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

What about mint? Mint makes me sneeze too. ?

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It plays sensory tricks so I wouldn't be surprised if it did. Mint makes me happy. Especially a fresh mint plant. Like catnip to me.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Compared to the amount in most foods, that's pretty good.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I knew a king, who sat on a throne, ruling the city of constipation. He squeezed all day, the face all red, nothing escaped in the duration

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

He moaned, proclaimed his regrets and swore of the cursed pure cocoa candy -

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

And with a crash, something hard shattered, the porcelain throne of the dandy

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Now out of the bathroom, the king sobbing robbed, the carpet all red were he went. Shot in the arse by a fool, that in the end repent.

I got addicted to 95%, roommate thinks I am insane after he took a bite of some.

3 years ago | Likes 89 Dislikes 2

I can understand why people don't like it, but I love very dark chocolate. I always keep a 99% (I prefer it to the 100%) tablet 1/

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

/ it is perfect with coffee. But one or two squares are enough most of the time

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's just far too bitter for me to eat it by itself. I like putting it coffee every now and then, though.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I tried 98% that I found while traveling in Japan. Brother and I joked the last 2% was wood glue to hold it all together. It was good though

3 years ago | Likes 67 Dislikes 1

love it

Then he won't eat your supply.

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Addicted to chalk

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I've had 100% before iirc... Shit's rough. 60% is great though.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's definitely an acquired taste

3 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Wow. I've occasionally tried some of those high-cocoa bars. For my taste, 70% is on the mildly bitter side, and ~80% tastes quite bitter.

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It is bitter up front, but take small nibbles and let it melt in your mouth and the flavor develops.

3 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Well quite a few things are bitter to me, or are just really "loud" in terms of taste.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

3 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

I put raw cacao in my coffee, does that count?

3 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Really? Is it good or is it a health thing? I know someone who drinks like.. raw cocoa and water.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I put it in my smoothies, it's delicious

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Isn't baking chocolate made with a lot of chocolate? Or do you mean pure cocoa by that?

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Lot of sugar* lol...

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Baking chocolate should have no sugar in it at all. Like cocoa powder but with the cocoa butter fats.
