So... Apparently someone discovered three separate books discovered in Harvard University's library that had particularly strange-looking leather covers.

Turns the smooth binding was actually human flesh... in one case the skin was allegedly harvested from a man who was flayed alive. WTF?!

Apparently this practice used to be pretty common in the 17th century. It's called Anthropodermic bibliopegy.

The book above, "Practicarum quaestionum circa leges regias", has a very interesting inscription inside on its 794th and final page:

‘The bynding of this booke is all that remains of my dear friende Jonas Wright, who was flayed alive by the Wavuma on the Fourth Day of August, 1632. King Mbesa did give me the book, it being one of poore Jonas chiefe possessions, together with ample of his skin to bynd it and about $3.50. Requiescat in pace.’

Necronomicon ex mortis, the book of the dead. Bound in human flesh and inked in blood!

Many human-flesh books are stored in the Vatican Secret Archives. They have some weird stuff hidden away.

According to Shakespeare even hair counts as flesh.

To be fair, Shakespeare was kind of an idiot.
