stick shifts saves lives

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I've taught 5 people to drive stick-shift and 4 people to snowboard. Probably my most fulfilling things I've done with my life were teaching.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Back in high school, I gave a muslim classmate a lift home when his friends ditched him during ramadan, and told one of the other guys I was giving a ride to knock it off when he teased the guy with food. He was grateful, I said don't worry about it, and thought nothing of it.

About a year ago, he reached out to me and sent me a profusely grateful message. He wasn't super comfortable being muslim (this was 9/11 era) and to have someone defend him was huge. Also, he realized his friends were 1/2

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

2/2 total asshates. He severed contact with those former friends, made new friends who weren't asshats, and said that he tried to embody that kind of kindness for others in his life going forward.

I was honored, but also a little surprised, because to me it had been such a small thing - fifteen minutes of time and basic decency. For him, it was a life-altering moment.

A good lesson to remember the impact you can have on others, I suppose.

You mean to tell me he just rode to Portland and found love when I've been paying for 4 different dating apps and get nothing. Jeez I could have bought 2 motorcycles by now

I thought they were a shape-shifter and buddy was about to learn a really cool party trick.

That was my thought too. Like she was a werewolf pitying a human guy because he lacked the ability to shift. I was very confused.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Guy dodged a bullet. Anyone who dumps someone for "being a pussy" is a bitch you don't want to deal with. If you can't show emotions around your partner, they are not a good partner.

2 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 0

Some people are really toxic about gender roles. Was chatting with another mom when her 3yr son tripped and hurt his knee. She scoffed and berated him for crying because he needed to 'toughen up.' I had to swerve out of that bc i had some words in the chamber that wanted out.

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Maybe she dumped him because some guy was assaulting her and he didn't say anything and just let him?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 8

Where is that context in his story?

This the world we can easily make for ourselves by simply being kind. It's all the global scale shit that we don't have any control over.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Look for the helpers.

2 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 1

There are ALWAYS people who are helping. Yes, this! If you take the time to look, you WILL see the good out there. If you focus only on the doom and gloom, you'll never see the occasional ray of sunshine. But it's there. @ProbablyNotASuitOfPlatypuses, it's worth looking out that window - just know what you're looking for, and keep looking until you find it.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It is the world we live in. However, there are still people in it that will kick you when you are down. Always remember there are people out there helping others.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's punk rock to be kind, be punk rock!

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Thing is, friend, it is. All that division? Entirely online. Meet someone in person? Don't talk politics and you'll find that they love to help others with very few exceptions. Just don't meet any CEOs.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Or, you know, don't be the wrong color in the wrong place.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Well, that's true, but doesn't change the point, people are tribal, they help each other to feel accepted by the group and they get joy from it. It's instinctual. But so is mistrust of others not in their group.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

More people need to learn stick

2 years ago | Likes 42 Dislikes 1

Stick always win!

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Why? Manual cars will stop being made outside of hobbyist circles within 15 years.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

Because stick shift cars (and their vintage) will be around for another 20-50y at least, partially due to used car prices, enthusiast support, older millenials giving up their heirlooms, et al.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

DUDE at 32 my wife and i decided it would be okay if i get a manual car and learn i now have a civic SI and actually enjoy driving again everyone needs this in their lives

In a world of eight billion, the bell curve for human decency has very, very long tails at both ends.

2 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

Sure, but it's a Bell curve and the people at the ends are just, bellends.

Tiny octopus wants you all to take this at face value and not do any research into Lauren Hough because either, 1). sometimes even the best people can have anger issues, or 2). sometimes even the worst people can have moments of clarity.

2 years ago | Likes 1002 Dislikes 57

There is both unbearable joy and unbearable sorrow in this world, and we so often do it to ourselves.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We're all imperfect beings just trying to get through it.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I think Tiny Octopus should write mini self-help novels in his voice, and with really fun illustrations of tiny octopuses doing fun things. Kind of like those "don't sweat the small stuff", but way better because real life is, well, real. Also, I would totally buy one.

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 2

Sometimes people want to post things without researching the social media posts of everyone involved going back 15 years.

2 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 7

In this case, Lauren Hough is an author that tiny octopus has read and even enjoyed, and so he is familiar with her.

2 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 6

4) sometimes an angel of mercy takes the wheel and we become exactly whomever someone else really needs us to be for just a little while, no matter how far out of character it may seem and for no reason we can explain later.

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

I looked her up. She grew up in a cult. Whatever she's done, I still can't find it, but growing up in a cult is bound to fuck you up.

2 years ago | Likes 69 Dislikes 1

It's not that bad - just shitty. They're just a transphobe and lost an award because of it due to Twitter drama.

2 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 2

@TinyOctopus you're my favorite person/non-person ever. I really fucking needed this reminder today as I just dug into a post and found a Milkshake Duck😂
I will pretend that all these positive things are just lovely stories, fiction or not.

2 years ago | Likes 81 Dislikes 11

Today is the 28th of Feb and my comment here has 69 points.... Niiiiice.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What does Milkshake Duck mean?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

As Flaboet commented. An example: "look at this cute duck drinking a milkshake!" 5 min later: "we regret to inform you that Milkshake Duck is racist"

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Can't edit comments, so replying: Found the answer in another reply, it's when someone liked on social media is exposed as being an awful person, and of course it was named after a twitter shitpost.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Ah shite... Not a nice person? Well that's shit! I really want to believe this is true, but optimism can be a useless hope sometimes!

2 years ago | Likes 106 Dislikes 5

I don't understand how that's not really obvious just from the post you shared. I'm amazed and sad how many upvotes this post has given the huge number of examples of this kind of language we've had over the past few years.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nobody is one thing. Nobody is the same things forever.

2 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 1

They seem to be a horrible transphobe and therefore must be held responsible.

2 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 9

I got suspicious when there were no markings on the ‘text’. But I wanted it to be true!

2 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 1

I'm living in hope that she at least did this one nice thing, and this was the outcome... Just maybe she's also not a nice person too, that she's hiding behind these good deeds, at least that way she's helped someone and not lying about absolutely everything 😬🤞😬

2 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 2

OK, so i looked her up, against the great advice... Let's just say if this guy was straight and white, it very possibly did happen.... Otherwise, yeah not so much 😢 so yeah, she's not a nice person 😡 but maybe this really did happen, I'm living in hope for him that it's true... Disgusted by the views she seems to have now.

Happens so often now there's a term for it...Milkshake Duck

2 years ago | Likes 55 Dislikes 1

Had to look that up! Yep, sounds like it's what she did, although I took @TinyOctopus advice and didn’t look her up, but I believe and trust the friendly octopus! For anyone else wondering exactly what it means, here it is!

2 years ago | Likes 51 Dislikes 1

TIL…

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

What … how did that term come about?? I'm so confused.

2 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 1

I had to look it up, I hadn't heard it either, so here's the explanation 😊

2 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 1

Or 3). We're all of us human and have days where we save the world and days where we burn it all down. Hopefully more of the former than the latter.

2 years ago | Likes 474 Dislikes 17

Thanks for this! I’ve always said the worst of us are capable of good just as the best of us are capable of evil.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

This is the most agreeable thing I’ve seen all day. A bit of bad in the best of us, a bit of good in the worst - none of us asked to be here, all of us are going to die. Everyone’s doing what they think is the best with the brains they were given.

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 2

I checked her out and, while I couldn't see any of the deleted tweets that got her the stink eye, it really seems more like she was defending a friend than being a gay jk rowling. Certain communities have been abused so much they're hyperviligant and quick to take offense. It's understandable but not everyone is a hater.

2 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 3

Thanks TO I'm heading into some unfamiliar waters myself soon and it should be fine but... what if it isn't? Alright it's Picard time 1/2 Https://i.imgur.com/CALiL2J.mp4

I will take Tiny Octopus' advice and not look up Lauren Hough.

I also agree with Tiny Octopus' assessment about people not being either good or bad, but just... shades of grey.

2 years ago | Likes 111 Dislikes 4

As long as those shades of grey moments of lacking clarity don't include exerting violence onto another person (unprovoked?)

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Wait. So you aren't really a tiny octopus?

2 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 3

I'm curious, which part of this do you not think an octopus could do? (Joking because obviously an actual octopus wouldn't be using Imgur, but also … they are scarily intelligent so probably *could* if they were taught.)
