I frequently see the above image (in its uncropped form) showing various top-end police cars around the world, usually poking fun at some other country. And I figured I'd weigh in with a vehicle from my home country.

Nobody ever gives a shoutout to the Northern Ireland police (PSNI, formerly RUC) Land Rover (known as the Tangi). So here it is:

And no, this isn't a military police vehicle or anything like that. This is a regular-ass police vehicle.

They were needed more during the height of the Troubles, when riots and violence in the streets was rife. Thankfully these days, they don't need to be deployed too often - but if you spend much time in NI, especially around Belfast, you may catch a glimpse of one. Normally, the police use more "regular" vehicles, like the Focus, Astra, Mondeo etc.

The Tangi is designed and built in-house by police engineers. It features bars for the windows which can be raised and lowerd as needed, and heavy reinforcement against bullets and other projectiles.

They're also very low because, let's be honest - these things aren't going off-road. Keeping them low stops people sneaking IEDs under them.

Some of them also feature the "Dawson Roof:"

This roof was developed after a drogue bomb badly damaged the roof of a vehicle without one. The crew inside had raised their riot shields to the ceiling just before the IED exploded, which saved them from injury, and led to the idea of a secondary, angled raised roof on top of the vehicle which would either deflect or bear the brunt of an IED, protecting its occupants.

Not much to say here. They're very sparse inside, and utilitarian.

NONE SHALL PASS.

See them in Derry all the time!

Yeah, "America" doesn't have a police car. We use whatever the fuck we want, including tanks. Or Smart cars. We're funny that way.

Japan doesn't need a militarized police force because it's an actually civilized 1st world country with a deep culture - unlike the US.

We got Police Explorer SUVs in California. Mind as well be a mobile SWAT unit

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yes, based off Defenders.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Colloquially referred to as Meat Wagons by those of us that grew up during the Troubles...

"They're very sparse inside, and utilitarian"... so utterly stock landrover then ?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Haha true, the Defender isn't known for its creature comforts

Now think of what Brexit would do to Ireland - one part stays in the EU. Strict borders - refreshed conflict. https://youtu.be/fyVz5vgqBhE

You guys got low rider Land Rovers

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Let's be honest, these things aren't going off-road. Keeping them low means someone can't sneak an IED under it

See these monsters about Derry all the time!

It vaguely resembles a zamboni.

For the curious, a drogue bomb is apparently a baked bean tin full of explosives.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

These are actually really dope. Id prefer these over sedans.

The UK has the Vauxhall Astra... you jumped the gun and posted a land rover.

Sorry for my ignorance, but what does OP mean?

See also https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Militarization_of_police

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This was less about militarisation and more about "how can we protect our officers from the petrol bombs they face every day?"

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

OK, and on closer look I see that the modifications are all purely defensive

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah there's no actual weaponry on them

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Would've been easier to just buy tracked APCs. Conversion of those things must have cost a fortune. They are badass though

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Defenders can be bought pretty cheap and done in-house. Plus, it means an impartial police force isn't seen to be "cosy" with british army.

One police equipped Dacia Logan costs 80,000euros (not including the car) in Romania so I thought these would be expensive too. I was wrong.

Look, when people still insist on killing each other over what type of Christian they are, the police cannot afford to mess around.

8 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 6

You're not wrong. Although the troubles long since went past religion and was more about where you were born.

8 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 1

To be fair, when you have over five hundred years of someone saying "Fuck you, that land isn't yours because we want it" it leads to that.

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Like thisisjunk before you, you're not wrong...

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Sorry. Grandma's family came from Waterford County, so I grew up hearing all this in extreme detail. ><

I'm from East Belfast and was raised Protestant, but I'm not going to defend the English here!

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Not to get too political, but the Tories continue their coalition talks with the DUP, we'll be seeing these back on the street more often.

Dyou know of any weaknesses? Asking for a friend ;)

Aim your petrol bomb for the tyres

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

This is what I'm most worried about right now.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Reunification is soon

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

Doesn't help it looks no closer to getting the power sharing agreement back up and running either.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I don't know why there are so many downvotes. It's true! The UDA = The DUP!

8 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 2

As a southern irish dude. You guys got a shite deal with brexit.

8 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 3

Everyone's hetting a shite deal with brexit, most just don't realise.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Year after Year, the Tories shit over everything. They then turn to the public and ask them to wipe their arses. What does the public do? -

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 3

- Gives them a rimmie, and a reach-around for good measure

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Oh, so they're like the GOP.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Kinda, except the GOP is much more right-wing than the Tories. Although (if left un-checked) that may change over the coming years

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

The Tories are already making cuts to national healthcare and general safety (fire prevention etc.). Just look at Grenfell Tower-
