Here in Canada, registration options include a check box on your tax return. The government then checks that against their list of citizens eligible to vote. Folks who don't have to file a return have other options.

Men are required to register for the draft when they're 18. It's not automatic and plenty of people are completely oblivious about it.

2 days ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The GOP would never agree sadly.

2 days ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It is the antithesis of what they're aiming to accomplish, so of course they wouldn't support it.

2 days ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I, a typical american male, turn 18 and sign the draft. then immediately get rid of the draft paper they tell you to keep.
This nation is no longer worth me risking my life for. We have become the bad guys in the world. I will not take part in that.

Voting registration in the US is handled by the states. When a state tries to automate registration, Republicans freak the hell out. Instead, they now want to *Federalize* voter registration so they can ensure Democrats never achieve a majority at the Federal level.

Guess what else they could do? Send you a fuckin bill for your taxes (or send you the refund) at the end of the fiscal year instead of making you pay someone to run through that shit for you.

A can is something you have to open and let me tell you, without a can opener it will get messy. Good luck.

Ah yes, with the binary fixated person, it's always black and white, no shades of grey.
😏😉đŸ€Ș😄

grey is just a stream of alternating black & white. :-p

It’s a crazy thing our government does when they verify the ballots. See, there’s what’s called a “curing period” wherein they take the voter registration information, and the voter rolls with the ballot numbers, and they go through the city and state databases to verify that they can indeed vote. The government, when you register, knows who you are, has or will verify that you are legally eligible, and will come after you if you aren’t.

Also just tell us what we owe or our refunds from taxes like literally every other country. Fuck turbo tax and intuit to death.

2 days ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

And taxes can be done automatically for the vast majority of people...

Always has been

How does registering people to vote help those corrupt nazis in power, though?

2 days ago | Likes 48 Dislikes 0

Because sometimes there is only one candidate on the ballot, and they're usually republican, especially in rural areas.

2 days ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Of course, it doesn't. I mean... you'd think they'd WANT people to vote, particularly Republicans. But they KNOW that the right-wing is not the majority. Fewer votes means an easier time committing fraud. Especially if you purge voter rolls in democrat strong districts.

2 days ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

By not telling the people they signed up and voting by proxy of course

IMO you should be forced to vote unless you vote to abstain for that election. That way instead of only 20-30% of our country votes to 20-30% specifically chose not to vote.

2 days ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You shouldn't be able to abstain at all. In Australia, there's a fine for not voting, and the most you can do is ruin your ballot by 'voting' for a junk candidate. *Some* exceptions exist, like if you're out of the country or something, but that covers very few votes and you *can* vote while away if you wish.

There are responsibilities to living in a democracy. Voting is, quite literally, the bare minimum you're expected to do and should be compulsory.

2 days ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You're right everyone of age should have to vote. Civil obligation to do so and everything. The abstain is effectively what you say to. Either vote for a trash candidate or mark the "do not vote" box on each section.

Both of our solutions is that everyone has to fill out the form each time, there's just a none box at the bottom on mine. Just thinking of middle ground because 'Murica doesn't like their cheese moved very far at a single time. I've been here for 40+ years and there are many idiots

Well, the one doing the draft is the federal government. The ones doing the voter registration are the states and counties. Different levels of government. Constitutionally the federal government has zero role in administering elections. So it would have to be a state-by-state thing for automatic voter enrollment.
Currently only North Dakota does this.

Where does the fed get the record of your birth that registers you for the draft? You were born in a state that informed the federal government.

2 days ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Actually, until recently you had to register yourself or in most states you would be registered through an opt in or opt out section in your driver's license application. Not registering is a felony. This meme isn't really accurate as the indivual must take steps to register (either go online or fill out a DL application). Starting in Decyou are automatically registered if you are a male one you hit 18.

Registering to vote is also a pet simple online process, at least it is right now.

1 day ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yes and voter registration is mostly at the county level.

2 days ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Some people believe that if they register to vote, they get called to Jury Duty.

2 days ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

Because it's true. Voter registration and DMV records are used for jury duty selection. It may be different in some states, though.

Right that's what I thought. Not sure why I was downvoted.

Putting aside that only fanatics and morons seek to intentionally commit this crime, you have to understand that when you do this, you are writing your name, phone number, address and much more on a piece of paper, handing it to the government, and saying “hello yes I would like to commit a crime, please.” And then expecting not to get caught. It’s like trying to rob a bank, only you’re wearing no mask, no gloves, waving at the camera and leaving behind your home address and license plate no.

2 days ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I don't follow. What crime? The government already knows you and your address anyway.

2 days ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Voter fraud.

1 day ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Guess what, they do automatically register people to vote in some counties. Usually white, affluent ones.

2 days ago | Likes 137 Dislikes 3

Yeah, you still gotta show a photo ID and your "election invitation" you got via mail tho.

1 day ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

guess what, not only it is automatic in a lot of countries, most countries make it COMPULSORY to register for voting:

2 days ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

In countries like PerĂș not voting is a punishable offense.

2 days ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

In America being poor and brown is a punished offense

1 day ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yup. In Canada, you get registered when doing your taxes. Well, technically it's optional but why would you not.

2 days ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

In my state (michigan btw) you get offered to register basically at any state agency. Also prisoners are automatically reregistered to vote on release. You can opt put, bit like you said, why would you not?

2 days ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Netherlands here. Automatically registered. We also tend to have 70-75% voter turnout.

2 days ago | Likes 43 Dislikes 2

That’s lower than I would have thought, but glad it’s working out better than our shit show.

2 days ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Germany checking in. Same. Always getting vote notification before every upcoming electing via mail. The US is plain scary in that regard (in a lot of others as well).

2 days ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I am irrationally annoyed by your username.
Het zijn stroopwafels. Ook, het is bedtijd en nu heb ik zin in stroopwafels. En bedankt! :-p

2 days ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Some countries even have compulsory voting. That should be the standard.

2 days ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

And it not even being a holiday is utterly undemocratic.

2 days ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Isn't Aussieland one of the compulsory ones?

2 days ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Yes

1 day ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Pretty sure it is.
