Is a black Leopard still a Panther because it’s a part of the same genus as a Jaguar?

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes. The panthera includes lions, tigers, leopards and jaguars. But not snow leopards, pumas and cheetahs which can also be melanistic.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I like my Indian black leopard medium.

Please take your information about the Joe Exotic case than a shitty netflix show that downplays that Joe Exotic is a rapist.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Who is she..is she a poacher..This is India he or she would be burned for killing animals.

6 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 2

If you haven’t seen it, I highly suggest watching it. It does not accurately portray America. It’s some of the worst of our people.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

They should all be in prison, except a few of the workers

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

It's from Tiger King. It's a show on Netflix.

6 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 2

ooh

6 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

Its about a fucked up guy who abused animals and drugged cubs to make money off them.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

To make a long story short, she was the target of a smear campaign by Joe Exotic, a competitor animal keeper, who blamed her for many things

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

If you read the Wikipedia article, you'll see that even the summary is bat-shit crazy

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Why did they stop calling them Panthers?

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Panthers aren't a specific species (it's the genus actually). A mutation causes the melanin surplus and it mainly happens in Jags/Leopards.

6 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Because Panthers and leopards are not the same.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

panther is actually scientific name for big cats

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Panther is a catchall, it's a term used interchangeably to refer to Cougars, leopards, jaguars etc. usually when melanistic.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

They didn't, but they also learned that panthers aren't their own species, just leopards and jaguars with a gene for melanism.

6 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Because people like being pedantic online. They go out of their way to say black leopard instead of panther just to be technically correct

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 3

It's not pedantic though... It's being technical. The word panther is being misused in that sense.

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Being technical and being pedantic are pretty much the same thing if the term you're correcting is already correct to begin with

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

But when most people say panther, they don’t mean the genus of big cats, they mean the mythical black cat. I’m a bio prof tho, so I’m biased

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Which part of India, just curious?
