It does, because the "feels like" is with the wind chill added. And wind feels so much colder than still air. -40C will always be cold, but at least if the "feels like" was also -40C you wouldn't have wind whipping in your face and making your eyes tear up which then freezes.
Pretty normal for my area. Mid Jan to late Feb is always -30 to -45C (before windchill) been getting off easy with the low wind speeds this year honestly.
I prefer that. Easier to get cool than to get warm. The fact we can get that 80 degree swing in a year melts my brain a bit every time I think about it
I disagree so much with this. At some point, there's nothing to take off to cool down, while you can just add another layer (or not go outside) if it gets crazy cold.
I have to drop off my kid at a nearby activity tomorrow and we'll walk in the feels like -30 something C. I can't say I wouldn't use the car on the feels like 40+C with humidity days in the summer.
That said, if humidity was not too high, I might be with you. That's not how summer is here :(
interesting ... I think it depends a lot on the quality of your housing - our temperature range is approx 6-36degC (43-97degF) most years so for us it's easier to throw on an extra layer or two of clothing as required but that's usually it ... cooling takes more energy, generally ... European students from regions where it gets properly wintry would often complain that they'd never felt colder than when living here ...
Insulation is HUGE here. Good windows and doors and proper sealing of everything. Keep it warm in the winter and cooler in the summer. I have an acquaintance with a fancy house that is sealed so tightly that his HVAC system breaks his windows due to the vacuum which is not the goal but impressive nonetheless
One of the little jokes I like to do is whenever someone mentions -40 I ask if that's in Celsius or Fahrenheit. It does not happen often and nobody laughs, but deep down I know it's a good bit.

Just reminded me I have to go out and do the boiling water toss thing with my kids when they get up. -33F here.
mrsdowneyjr
Don't do it toward your kids please
Pinky135
Don't use a big amount of water, just a small cup. Speed at which the toss is done is essential. You want to get small drops, not big globs!

Yo I thought -20 was bad enough

Having felt both in the past without the wind chill factor, -52 is significantly worse

I’m going into shock and unconsciousness either way

If I ever find myself developing a UI that shows temperature, -40 will be special-cased to randomly show F or C.
Alurkerforcedtologin
I'll add a special case to not show any units. Chaos reigns.
Dasnekones
I mean, -40 Kelvin would be interesting. Terrifying, yes. But intetesting.
nation543
That is -531º F which is problematic because absolute zero, where molecules stop moving, is −459.67º F.
