Fun fact: the 'dark side' of the moon both receives and reflects more light than the 'light side.'
This is because the far side of the moon faces the sun during the point in its orbit of the Earth where it's at its closest.
Whereas, the near side of the moon only faces the sun when it's on the far side of the Earth, and therefore farther away.
ScottaHemi
the black basalt flats and frequent eclipses probably don't help that either.

pizzadude2000
The moon has no rotation and therefor we never get to see the dark side
bortlp
Tidal locking means one side always faces Earth and therefore doesn't get hit as much.
GrandProtectorDark
The dark spots are caused by heavy strong impacts. Thisr don't happen as frequently.
I asked my question wrong. I know the moon is tidally locked. What I was wondering was: why are the dark spots on the side we see, and the
Cleaner side on the side we don't see?
AutoBat
The "clean" side gets hit by an amazingly high number of space objects because it has no atmosphere. We always see the same side because 1/2
2/2 geosynchronous orbit has rotation the same as its spin. It's like if we spun once every year. The side the sun sees would be the same.
Katateochi
this is kinda not right at all. atmo has nothing to do with anything, there is none. orbit is not geosync. tidally locked is the reason.
justForRon0Fez
And that is because it's tidally locked, right?

Lava flows smoothed out the craters. The far side doesn't have many because it gets hit by meteors a lot more often.
oneofthesedaysimgoingtocutyouintolittlepieces
That's where Gary Larson lives.
Supermutantvirus
Why does the earth facing side show so many craters yet behaves like it never rotated to face space for impacts to become?
LtcMaker
It wasn't always tidally locked with earth
lazy me-> https://www.reddit.com/r/askscience/comments/um6ma/if_the_near_side_of_the_moon_always_faces_earth/
Look at how far away the moon is, it's easy for a meteor to miss earth, but still hit the moons near side. It's just not as likely.
If the earth was a basketball, the moon would be a tennis ball 24 feet away. You can see the earth only shields it a little bit.
And most of that is because any asteroid getting close to the Earth would be flung off by gravity.
TheButcherOfBlaviken
Ancient lava flows from around 4 billion years ago.
CarlMasterC
I thought the moon was created from the Earth after a huge impact during its formation. Are the lava flows THAT old???
ThePastmaster
We don't really know how the moon was formed but that's the generally accepted hypothesis AFAIK. Also: Yes.
danzoid
But... but the universe is only 5000 years old...
Mytrashpanda101
Kinda weird that the other side doesn't have them
Se7enPr1me
No it itsnt. The side facing the earth is locked because more of the moon's mass is concentrated on that side, where the lava flowed...
dustygamedev
Also the side facing Earth is much less likely to be hit by space objects, therefore being relatively untouched and undisturbed.
thisnameistaken
So the the bit with all the black is what I see when I look up at the sky?

Jensaw101
Yes. The image's contrast looks like it's been bumped up, but google an image of the moon at night.
That's not how tidal locking works. The tidal forces slow rotation untill there are no more tidal forces. One side isnt heavier than another
Uh ok dude cite your source for that
What you linked says nothing about tidal forces influencing the moons rotation. Nice try though
