Only once some years ago I managed to get the perfect watermelon, sweet and delicious. I know this because when I put it on the table after getting home it rolled off and shattered on the floor. The tiny pieces I tasted while cleaning up were heavenly.
This infographic, in addition to what seems to be wrong information, is badly constructed. You've got pairs that go "good, bad, good, bad, bad, good, good, bad".
I tried to use this (not this image) when picking one out earlier this week. Will be cutting it open tomorrow for a BBQ so I will likely not report back but I'll at least tell myself to. It had a spot and some webbing. Forget the color of the spot and too lazy to check
This is complete nonsense. I worked for C&S Wholesale Grocers years ago. I worked as a manager at a facility that received and distributed watermelons (among other items). As part of my duties, I had to inspect incoming loads of watermelons. Resultingly, I've cut thousands of watermelons. There's no hard, fast rules. A melon can look great on the outside and be bland on the inside due to growing conditions.
That's not guaranteed either. Excess water early in the grow cycle produces a melon that sounds good, but is bland as fuck. There are no guaranteed methods.
None. Source: worked for a massive grocery wholesaler and part of my duties included inspecting incoming watermelon loads. I've sliced thousands of melons.
Dunno, every summer I cut open soooo many watermelons for work, and I always try a bite (cause how can you not?) and there really doesn’t seem to be rhyme or reason. but that’s just my experience.
it's hard to read, especially the yellow text shape: "different varieties and growing conditions" spot color: "ripe / underripe" webbing: "it's a result of how the vines are on the melon" color: "dark=ripe; light=unripe; shine/dull=nothing"
My father worked on a watermelon farm, I've been growing watermelon in my gardens for decades and buying multiple a week when they are in season from the stores.
Basically, just two checks, 1. push on it does it give easily? if it does it was stored poorly and its bad, if its hard/firm its good. 2. Dark green with a yellow spot and you are good, if its pale with a white spot its under ripe.
thevortexmaster
Funny. I was just at the store picking out a watermelon. I googled how to pick out watermelon and this was what came up
justareallylongemailaddress
I'm probably damaged, I don't like any fruits from the melon family. Hold the boob jokes, I enjoy those "melons" just fine.

So I want a uniform dark dull webshot watermelon with an orange spot.

Watery watermelon tastes awful.

Uniform and heavy with lots of webbing. Gotcha.

You really think someone would do that? Spread false information online?

Yeah more shitty misinformation on the FP. This community sucks more and more by each day that goes by. Any better alternatives to Imgur anywhere?

IMHO: Posts like these aim to help but they just increase anxiety in life. Odds are you've been perfectly happy about your choice until now.

What?? This would be spot on if it also included thumping it. If you feel bad about your current pick, well, now you know for next time.

Conclusion: you will want a fat dull one, with a skin condition.
oldguyexlurker
And an orange, bald spot.

Just like @op's mom

That's more round than oblong
GenXHippie
LordHosk
That makes no difference, also the webbing makes no difference, thats just a result of vines on the rine as it grew.
sevenfingerman
What should it sound like?
ChallengerDeep
Like the sound of a baby crying faintly.
ScarecrowSticks
You'll know because it has a certain slap sound to it
secondgoaround
Watermelon can’t talk or vocalize at all, so they’re pretty quiet.
skipweasel
I've always wondered how much of this is true.
Smileyguyx
this was shared before, and someone commented the only reliable way they've found is by tapping the melon and listening to the reverberations
walnutbreath

I’m a thumper , not hallow not thud, in between. Then I look for color and weight
CanIGetSomeExtraSalt
somewhere between 0-100%
inphamous
The only one that seems to be true for me is roundness. All the others are variable.
CitizenPrime
It's all bullshit

I've stuck by it and so far it hasn't steered me wrong.

Syko73
I know at least the on about round vs elongated is wrong. The shape is just dependent on the variety.
Bixley
Possibly none of it, but I've had much greater success since using it. Probably ripeness and i once saw a sound one that contributed to good choices
feryooday

(we use watermelon puree in a few of our cocktails at my bar during summer)

Now you'll have to do a test on each of them! Down to the farmers market you go:)

Even the spot color isn't always true, can vary a bit depending on soil conditions, weather, and variety.
vakler
Now I have to buy 8 fucking watermelons to see if this is true. Or double up on a couple options if possible. Dammit
binaryspike
It's true. Also, thump it. The deeper the sound the more ripe it is.
LordHosk
My father worked on a watermelon farm, I've been growing watermelon in my gardens for decades and buying multiple a week when they are in season from the stores.

Oh thank you now I don't have to be a watermelon lady from a math problem at the grocery store tomorrow!
