Should have put a gap on the other side of the knives so that you can pick them up easier.

Only the last knife should be difficult to pick up since you can just push on the gap between them & the beveled edge will make it slide.

The knives are actually the easiest to pickup with only the gap on the inside b/c the knives are twice as thick, rounded, and don't stack.

If I were to penetrate the solid perimeter, the North and South halves would be connected only by the 1/16 thick bottom. Wouldn't last.

Most people have a mish-mash of at least 2 sets of flatware in their drawer. These types of inserts do not work for them.
