Just a little restoration Part 24

Sep 4, 2017 3:55 AM

Been putting in a lot of work over the past week or so. Finally some solid updates, and many steps closer to her being nice again.

Started with cleaning up the bay a little bit and installing the windshield wipers.

Just in case anyone is curious how the windshield wipers work.

Got the majority of the dash put on and together at this point.

When low and behold I almost took out my eye. Carelessness set this off real fast. Luckily it missed my eye.

I had a pesky seatbelt and it was frozen. That little silver ball basically controls this entire thing. I didn't end up fixing it,but broke it instead...

Door cards were finally ready to go on. Decided to just clean up the original plastics (since the panels will one day be replaced and painted the same colors)

Got them in and all cleaned up. She is really starting to look like a car at this point.

Noticed on one of the doors (that I do believe to be OE paint) 2 finger prints, probably from a factory worker.

Took her to class one day to get a few little test drives, which led to this weekends events..

Started getting the stereo and speakers hooked up,and I noticed frequent cutting out of the speakers. Looked to the door connector and all the wires were either cut/broken. Very common issue in these cars.

Pulled her partially into the garage and started cleaning up,and getting a list of all the interior bits I need.

Took her out to a local car thing, wasn't anything crazy, but I finally let the city get to know her.

Well shit.

Took the wheel and started to get some of that dirt and grime off. This was from the beginning...

How she looked when I was all done!

It started as a test drive to school, then I decided to drive her wherever I go and try to get 100 miles on her. Did just that. At the end of the 100 miles I had a list of things I learned needed to be fixed. She did absolutely amazing.
List:
Power steering pump is shot
Driver rear caliper is frozen.
Handbrake cables were broken
Passenger wheel hub needs replaced
Tires/alignment is needed

Quality meme that relates to how all the "car scene" people were.
Thanks for all the support so far!!!

I understand. It's a labor of love. Most people have never heard of the VW harlequin. Looking good!

My boss picked up #108 a few months ago. #11 also popped up for sale half hour north of us.

Ummmmmmmm, so why not restore a 'vette or Mustang or something cool?

Cool is relatives to ones own tastes. I do enjoy old muscle, but I'm a euro guy. Harlequin is right up the alley of rare/cheap/easy to fix.

Surprised an outboard CV joint was not on the needed repairs list. Notoriously problematic.

Replaced the axles when I put the motor back in, because one of the outer cv joints broke haha
