The “BlasTech DL-44 heavy blaster pistol” shown in these photo is really a Broomhandle Mauser C96 (Read that 1896 design!) pistol, with movie voodoo on it. This gun is the original, from the first movie made in 1977, “A New Hope.” There was cooperative work done between the UK and the US, Bapty in the UK, and Stembridge Gun Rentals in the US. I don’t want to bore everyone to tears with trivia you can gather elsewhere. The photos of this gun, are of one of the 4 that were used in the UK, this was the primary (There are always extras in case of a failure so the production isn’t halted while the armorer fiddles around). It had been used in different movies. This one, is at Bapty Ltd in the UK, (they do NOT want to be contacted in this regard, won’t sell it at present). I took these pics many decades ago on a project there in the UK, thought that y’all might appreciate seeing the real detail & markings.

ZK383’s darling daughter at 13 years old, with the US pistol from the first movie at Stembridge in Glendale. (Yes, exercising poor trigger control, she just picked it up with her left hand when we were talking) Mid-1990s, we were working on a movie project at the time, my kids spent a lot of time there. They got a lot of cool autographs while there. I still wonder if they realize what a “Special” childhood they had.
Got thinking, most movie and video game fans aren’t really “Gun” people per se, so here’s the Han Solo gun with movie voodoo, above a regular C96 Broomhandle (It’s on its stock, that’s what is behind the grip).
Good view of the serial number and the “Blaster” attachment on the front of the barrel.
View of the scope from the left side of the Han Solo gun.
The scope is a Hensoldt Wetzler Dialyt 3x sniper rifle scope, WWI German. The mount was adapted by Carl at Bapty, the madman armorer who’s been there since the 1960s.

I post a few movie guns here & there on Imgur, I’ve been in and around the biz since the 70s, around the world, have some cool movie prop photos and straight talk on what was going on. Hope you enjoy, and it helps with your cosplay & collections!
ZK383 out.

You didn’t have to specify mid-90’s, her necklace did that.

Hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side.

A Peter the Painter gun!
Cheese717
Step 1: have a real gun.
warofwrath
No mystery disc?
VanitasRPF
It's not Han's real blaster, so no. The entire base gun is different; only the scope & mount caps are authentic. The rest is a counterfeit.

Boomhandles are awesome pistols always have a special place in my heart

VaultGirl69
The Mandalorians used shotgun style weapons to kill Jedi. Harder to redirect slugs than lasers.

There's fun AR based manual bolt pistols known as Solo pistols because of layout similar to a c96. Fun if you have a can...

Does that Bapty owned blinged up Mauser work? I always wanted a SW blister that shoots real bullets.
ZK383
Yes, it's "Live" but blanked. It would fire blanks but the effects are CG.
Northwindlowlander
AS we speak, prop makers are considering adding that serial number to their own reproduction
VanitasRPF
That would be a shame since this isn't Han's screen-used C96; only the scope & mount cap rings are authentic. 2813 is the correct number.

Oh please don't tell me they ruined a Mauser by making it into a movie prop.
RPCd
I loved the tire scene in solo when harrelsons character handed the gun to solo and it still had a stock attached.

MushroomFiend
The stormtrooper guns were Sterling SMGs with Canadian training magazines. And the rebel blasters were also sterlings with a backwards OEG
MushroomFiend
Sorry wait, the OEG sight is the right way around. Bonus fact: the heavy blasters were MG42s, MG34s, and a Lewis gun without a magazine.
BeardedCoffeeMonkey
I have a Master Replicas Han Solo blaster that I treasure. I love the whole look of the gun and the scoundrel who wields it.
slidewhistlesymphony
Ultra cool! Thank you for this!
LucidAftermath
@mistersavage Probably has an exact replica already, but this is good info for someone else to build one.

Broomhandle Mauser always makes me think of Max and Paddy.
NSPike
So glad it's not just me who makes that connection instantly!
ZK383
So yer in the UK, are ya? I don't tink I've e'er seen that in the US of A.
MostlyJustTryingToBeNice
I refuse to believe anyone in the US has heard of Max and Paddy. But I would pay to see Max and Paddy tour the states
ZK383
I've spent a lot of the last 40 years in the UK, used to be 2-3 times a year, 3-4 weeks, now, just 3 weeks/year. Lot of hotel TV.
FredGarvinMP
Thank you for sharing this. What great experiences you must have had over the years.
ZK383
Yeah, it's been a wild ride. Every once in a while I write something up to share.
CapitalNick
Not sure if @mistersavage would be interested.
ZK383
Didn't realize he was on here, openly. I did a number of things with them, pretty interesting people.
ChipWallace
Your daughter is holding Han's blaster from ROTJ, not ANH.
ZK383
They recycled and updated guns, the one you see there was in ESB and ROTJ in that form. Had to coordinate w overseas.
THECosmosTerror
The muzzle attachment is an old shower head. They may have drilled the holes in for effect.
BeardedCoffeeMonkey
I had read that it was a fire extinguisher nozzle.
3rdoption
Pff. No wonder those things can't hit the broad side of a bantha.
VanitasRPF
It was a flash hider from a German MG-81 Machine Gun.
ZK383
most of the ones made were turned on a lathe, I used to have some

*glares wilt envy*
Larktonguesinadicecup
My dad told me a story about shooting one in the backyard in the sixties and the down the street neighbor walked up to talk to him
Larktonguesinadicecup
because he fought for the nazis only fifteen something years before that and he *recognized the specific sound of the pistol*
chrissolikesbeer
My dad's mate has one when I was a kid with the wooden holster/stock and a wooden box. My dad had a WW2 tommy gun.
Targe0
Makes sense, they all learned the sound of the different guns used by each side in the war.
Larktonguesinadicecup
Yeah, you hear about that being a thing in Vietnam a lot with the limited visibility. But a bit spookier when it's an (ex..?)
Larktonguesinadicecup
Nazi showing up all "ahh yes I remember now" lol
HarrisonTheViking
He shot first
GorillaStark
Depends on which version you are watching. Original, DVD orå blue-ray I think
Billis75
He shot.
itsthebarrelbombdotcom
I never got why that was a bad thing. There’s no 2nd place in a gunfight, and Han isn’t some noble guy. No famous gunfighters ever were.
ZK383
I agree. I would have also.
welluhwhatdoyouwantmetosay
Targe0
I am fairly sure he did half of the edits just to fuck with the fan base. And after the level of harassment he suffered, they earned it.
MollyNapQueen
No. Han shot only.
DaDudeAbides
Here here
TakenCourier
Came here to say this. Han isn't a noble hero, he's a smuggler, he shot to save his own skin. Freedom never shot.
AnonOmis1000
So they used an actual period Broom Handle Mauser?
Larktonguesinadicecup
In 1977 they weren't much of a big deal. Plenty of surplus lying around.
Wolfshead009
Most of the Star Wars guns were modified WW2 (or earlier) guns as that is what the prop rooms had plenty of cheap.
AnonOmis1000
Just feels...wrong.
MacClay
They are still doing it, too! The Mandalorian has a bunch of real guns with a bunch of scifi nonsense grafted onto them.
