Lots of examples but one that stands out is the "Christians" who claim that there are only two genders "bEcAuSe ThE BiBLe SaYs" when Judaism recognizes eight genders and the First Human (ha'adam) was both male and female, like the God in whose image they were made (see Gen. Rabbah 8:1, Ber. 61a, Eruvin 18a, etc.). The gender binary is Imperialist Christian nonsense.

Just shared with family. They are all Christian but also participate in Judeo-Christian practice, and some are Jewish by blood. So maybe they will learn?
One can hope.

pull a rib from adam to make eve.. they had the same dna - thus both male at the time of 'creation': babies result - proving that eve transitioned to female - "because the bible says" that eve was the first transexual.
laserfork
Here in Canada the First Nations in many instances recognized what they called two-spirit people, i.e. someone born with a male and female spirit. So you'd have someone born male who'd assume a partial male and female identity and do male and female activities within the band. One of many cultural expressions of trans-gender identity over the years. But this is like people saying "there are only two biological genders", knowing nothing about chromosomal aneuploidy and the like. Just ignorance.
pip1
Well, not Colonialism exactly. Germany was a leading center for sexuality and gender studies (including trans), but all that was purged by the Nazis.
MySushi
Colonialists started the history erasure, but the puppet governments and indoctrinated believers they left behind, finished the job for most of the common-wealth nations.

We spend a helluva lot of time a energy pointing out differences in between each other.
Instead we should value the qualifications and qualities of every human.
Acknowledge the contribution and build humanity together.

It's nonsense, and bad faith nonsense, but even from that perspective it pisses me off--I do not agree trans and the LGBTQ+ rise is a mental disorder and a societal illness that needs to be stamped out. I think it's fucking stupid, asinine, and hateful, and is designed as rhetoric to push that hate.
BUT... BUT, if you DO believe that, then eliminating it through violence and abandonment isn't help. If these toilet-clogging cunts really thought this was a problem top be fixed, they would try to.

I'm pretty near 50 and have been aware of trans people for as long as I can remember. Is it so different in America?
nicelyvillainous
Oh, yeah, the bigotry was pretty crazy, trans people were basically lumped into the oppression of gay people, and it was culturally assumed in media etc that anyone crossdressing was just gay and had a weird fetish.
So dressing in women’s clothing was basically just a signal for being crazy or a pervert, not it’s own thing. Like M.A.S.H. having corporal Klinger, who it was made VERY clear only crossdressed to try to get ruled as crazy and sent home from the army.
vodkaho
Not to mention the fact that the absolute first thing the Nazis did in Germany was to erase the lead and destroy any research or mention of anything other than straight cis heterosex, gender information, and sexual identity. Exactly what the GOP and felony musk are doing now. Ship the people you don't like to camps. Bludgeon the rest into submission.
Gogoglovitch
One of the most famous photos of Nazi book-burning was them destroying the collection of the Institute for Sexual Studies, which did some amazing research on sexuality and did the first modern sexual reassignment surgeries. We're likely decades behind where we should be on the research because of that, and the right wants to send us back further.

From what I gather, the two-gender obsession evolved as a royal-line-preservation thing in Europe and spread into religion over a couple instances when clergy were hired to convince the masses that the current ruler was the One True Chosen One. It didn't affect sane people until the age of census data, and adherents were able to observe Gender existing in time, and not just Now, and -being powerful- decided to reject reality and impose an artificial structure to soothe their sensibilities.
captainhappen
It wasn't just a European thing, the whole "strategic marriage in a political system that prioritizes inherited power" really really kinda requires two people that can produce a heir together. The "divine right of kings" wasn't just a European thing.
captainhappen
"adopted heir" doesn't really work when the king/emperor whatever was selected by the gods to be the eternal bringer of the endless dawn or whatever

To be fair pretty sure very few schools teach trans history unless you go to uni in and take a class about it.
That said, there is a difference between not knowing and refusing to learn.
Conservatives are just unable to recognize or admit that they can be wrong on something, all they know is how to double down to make they side "win".
Sebastopol140
We know they are.
DrewThe3DPrinterGuy
It's the circle of dumb. Stupid people support conservatives, conservatives get elected and defund public schooling, leading to an increase in the percentage of stupid people, who vote conservative.

Transgenderism has existed since at least ancient Sumeria, but why should that matter?

They would tie the left hand to the body so they were forced to only use the right hand. My dad wanted me to do this to my son. Nope, nope, nope.

I was going to post something like this. You can find similar patterns for divorce, and homosexuality, etc. It turns out that people hide behaviors that are not socially acceptable or criminal. Go figure.

#1 Not exactly true. As a teen in late '60s/early '70s USA suburbia, I heard of Christine Jorgensen but it was mostly in the sense of her being a freak. I only knew of gender as binary which is a shame since I secretly tried on my mom's and cousin's panties and would have greatly benefited from knowing of gender fluidity.
bikergeek6249
Yeah, same. I was a teen in the late '70s-early '80s US suburbia. I'd only heard of Christine Jorgensen and Wendy Carlos. And I think I only heard of Wendy Carlos because I'd enjoyed Switched On Bach. Back then being trans had a very narrow definition. You had to tell the "I was born in the wrong body" narrative almost verbatim to be considered trans.
kittyfajitas
The increase applies to the LGBT population in general, too. The reported #s have been essentially doubling for each generation since the boomers. I think Gen Z is about 25%. Ppl are so upset about seeing this reflected in movies/tv and act like it's being "crammed down their throat" (interesting their obsession with the phrase "shoved down their throats", but I digress). In reality, it's just corporations trying to make money off the ppl who will be alive the longest.
nicelyvillainous
Also, conservatives LOVE to do a bait and switch, talking about how lgbt young people mean the population will crash, but ignoring that the majority of the increase they are using numbers for is people willing to say they are bi to some degree.
Which, like, “the percentage of the population willing to admit publicly that they would be down for a threesome on occasion has gone up significantly,” is not really much of a shocking take lol.
Ditto including non-binary into trans numbers.
kittyfajitas
That's been my thought, too, re: "increase" in bisexuality. It's just a combo of education/decrease in stigma. I'm an elder millennial, and I'll admit I've been a bit of a prude due to general lack of knowledge up until the last decade or so. With so much focus on all this in recent years, I've learned a lot and realized that yeah, I definitely would. Boobs *are* nice, lol. If asked in a poll, I'd most likely say I'm bi, bc I'm not straight. At 30 I'd've said I was as straight as one can get.
nicelyvillainous
Yep. I think a BIG chunk of the increase is not a change in behavior, just being willing to admit it. I’m more mid range millennial, and I could be wrong, but I’m pretty sure even in the late 90’s in middle school I heard jokes about spaghetti lesbians, “straight until wet”.

#1 #1 That just means they mostly ignored trans people until the rich needed another culture war distraction and told the morons to hate trans people. Because the hate against gays was losing traction.
ropetopus
And because LGBTQ+ advocacy organizations had been telling trans folks to wait until there was marriage equality. When that happened, we all started talking more about how trans people are treated, and the conservatives who just never paid attention at all had to confront the existence of trans folks for the first time.
bikergeek6249
Yep. They can't organize hate against the entire LGBTQ+ community any more, because even in conservative communities, everyone has "that relative" who married their "best friend" or "roommate" and it turns out that even homophobes will often stand up and defend their own family members. So they play "divide and conquer" by splitting off a small segment of the LGBTQ+ population to start with.
