World War I broke out a month later, with a toll of 9 million military deaths and 5 million civilian deaths, those mostly due to starvation, displacement, and disease. This does not include the millions lost to genocides committed by the Otttoman Empire (Turkey) and Russia during the war.
World War I also set the stage for the second world war, which cost 100 million lives.

All those deaths and still the planet's population surged from 1.6B in 1900 to 2.5B by 1951. And now we're at 8B.

What set the stage for WWII was what happened after the first war. Punishing the German state in a way that it directly effected the people.
