My family and I got a few crosses on the SR.N4 to France before they canned them, Hovercraft are bloody awesome

I can feel the sand in my teeth.

3 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 0

You can get rid of that feeling by munching on a few crayons.

I'm not sure you can circle jerk over this when the money could be better spent raising living standards/wages/ healthcare etc

Doesn't everyone have a hoverport? https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southsea_Hoverport

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So what happens if an enemy shoots the inflated part with a big gun?

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's not really inflated, the air comes out from under the skirt anyhow. So a few holes won't make a difference with the amount of airflow needed to lift that thing.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

One or two tiny holes won't do anything, but 50 will.

YEAH COME ON, POWERRRR!!!! *May looking annoyed* v

Thanks, that's a much better title

I read that in David Attenborough s voice

You can tell by the way my engines talk, I'm a hovercraft LCAC LCAC

@OP Ever been on one? Totally fascinating. Part of my family is from the Caribbean where these are prevalent for inter Island travel.

I knew they were big, but the cars really put „big“ in perspective

3 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 1

Even though there obviously American cars. In Europe that would be busses.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

big enough to carry an Abrams.

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Small compared to the Channel ferry service back in the 90s https://youtu.be/Y8I3aK5A13U

Holy shit. Childhood memory unlocked straight outta nowhere!

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Is that the Virginia Beach Oceanfront?!? I live like 4 blocks from there, where the hell was I?!?

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Wondered same!

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

757er here too and was like "fuck that place!"

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I saw it once last Fall and had no idea what the hell it was until right now

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yea they bring it up on the beach for shows sometimes. The amphibious base is on the point north of first landing park.

ScrapHeap Challenge, lvl 100

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That has to be a blast to pilot

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sound would've been nice. Super noisy, but I like it.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We used to go to France on a hovercraft as a kid. We drove our car onto it! Still amazes me. The Channel Tunnel killed off the service.

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I thought cheap ferries and massive fuel & maintenance costs killed them?

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And also, what a great experience it would've been. Were they as noisy on the inside as they seemed from the outside?

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I don't recall it being that noisy. No more so than a hydrofoil. But it was FAST. Took about 30 minutes (I think) and you were in Calais.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I had a car-carrying hovercraft from Lego competitor Tente. It may have been modeled after the French one.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

i legitimately did not know Lego had competitors, thought the just had knock-offs

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It was a Spanish company that manufactured this, only in the 70's and 80's.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

these things used to ferry over passengers and cars on the daily from France to the UK and back. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y8I3aK5A13U

3 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

And you can go visit them and go inside them at the Hovercraft Museum in Gosport, they also have Submarine, diving, naval artillery museums.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah, and then they figured out that the actual ferries did it way better, faster, and more fuel efficiently.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

And could actually go onto a section of the port that let the cars drive off efficiently that the hovercraft can't because of the cushion.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Things evolve all the time. It's just a pity you can't experience it anymore.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Not trains. Some things are proven, reliable technology. Trains, ferries, and boats are among that. You don't need to reinvent every wheel.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Hovercrafts are so fucking cool. I'm so disappointed we didn't do more with them as a society.

3 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

yes, and Ekranoplans too.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, its really hard to understand why a difficult to maintain, expensive, extraordinarily loud transportation method -

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

That has trouble getting over even slightly uneven ground, and is slow on water, didn't catch on. Its like Elon's hyperloop.

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Except this didn't have twitter around to analyze its failure at every early opportunity, so investors actually INVESTED in this scam.

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Last time I went on one it was half-full of frogs - the old Hoverspeed cross-channel service, now long gone.

Please fondle my bum

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Not yet, but I'll get to it. It's been a very busy morning.

how else you think it peeled off like that

I will not buy this record. It is scratched.

Keeping sand out of the Mechanicals must have been an engineering nightmare.

3 years ago | Likes 84 Dislikes 0

True fact. All the electrical connectors and as much of the hardware as possible is high grade stainless steel.

3 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 0

Built a few crafts and even small scale it is an absolute nightmare. Everything is fancy aluminum alloys or chemical resistant stainless

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

They are just pre-treated with DustOff®

I do not see anything here that’s superb, other than a superb waste of gov money

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 5

I don't know if these things have ever been used in combat.

Oh, btw, downvote me all you want, not the biggest fan of chocolate. More… VERY acid, sour gummies, frozen. But I enjoy cocoa as a whole..

Especially as “it becomes more farmer friendly, whole trade” or whatever. I think it’s bs, but there’s an awareness

You’re obviously a youngster. Used in at least the first Gulf War.

Instead of the meth they used in WWII!? Man, missing out.

Eating chocolate? Or using theobromine? I love discussing nootropics and their efficacy and stacking ability. Appreciate the service

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Chocolate & the close relative caffeine. So my daily drink of choice is coffee mocha. Honestly, don't know much about nootropics & stacking.
