Not saying this is what you do, by my roommate is like that. He mumbles, facing away from me, while the faucet is running or tv/music is playing. So I say, "sorry, I can't hear (which is true), what was that?" So instead of annunciating while facing me, on his first repeat he angrily yells whatever he had said like I'm the asshole. We've lived together for about a decade and our conversations either go like this or I pretend I understood bc I don't feel like being screamed at.

I've tried so many settings, I just haven't found the -apparently VERY narrow- range that works for them.

Heh, it's the reverse: They've got their earphones in, or the faucet running, or are turned away from me, or all of the above plus a bunch more.
