A non-Japanese person trying to lecture an ACTUAL Japanese person about the cultural appropriation of Japanese culture

A bunch of college-aged nutjobs protesting a work of art celebrating Japanese culture had something called Kimono Wednesdays shut down at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. A majority of these protesters aren't even Japanese-Americans and most of them are indoctrinated idiots in college.

Counter-protesters who are actually of pure Japanese origin and blood (and are older and probably escaped how messed up some colleges are) also appeared at the museum to let people know it's actually okay to wear a kimono to appreciate Japanese culture.

This is getting silly.

I studied this its about Cultural appropriation vs Cosmopolitanism. Should obtained items remain in a museum or be returned to original ppl

These nuts need to be named and shamed.

I wish there was another planet we could send all these people looking to get offended for attention, so we wont 'offend' them anymore. ;)

I remember being a college student, I was an arrogant airhead under the illusion that I understood anything.

The problem is, I think these kids are going to grow up thinking this is the norm. I worry about the future.

I found this out from the Youtuber Veemonro. It is silly. What is wrong with race b putting on clothing of race c?

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Nothing. I got this from Veemonro too. He's awesome - posts lots of anti-crazy (feminist/SJW) stuff, but I didn't mention that in the desc

Would've put a giant target on my head. This kind of shit is getting way more common - wonder what we can do about it.

Someone please explain to me the problem with "appropriating culture".

I think some are concerned that, on top of possibly showing disrespect, the cultural value is watered down or robbed from those who own it.

How did you even get to this post?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

But also, being 'college age' or at college or having 'pure japanese origin and blood' have nothing to do with anything

The ongoing cult of offense mongering on campus has them saying "Only people of Japanese origin and blood can wear kimonos ever". Relevant.

The Japanese consulate in Boston has described the protest as "very funny" and that they have "no idea what their point of protest is".

Yep, these people need to be mocked at every turn. This is why comedians exist.

And THAT is fucking funny.

I really don't get why cultural appropriation is bad unless it's like blatant making fun of something. I like to appreciate other cultures.

10 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 2

even if you're making fun of something, as long as it's not malicious it's not bad. like making fun of the British for drinking so much tea.

i don't know where chicken and waffles came from, supposedly new york or california, but can it go away? is that applicable here?

I once had someone get mad at me about drinking chai. Some people are bugfuck.

It's bad when the appropriators are praised for the behavior whereas the original people are put down for it.. IF Japanese were put down 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I guess I kind of lumped that in with making fun of a culture. But now I'm afraid to even like stuff from other cultures, which is sad.

by Russians for wearing Kimonos, for example, but then Russians adopted it as a new trend, THAT would be an issue.

I really don't get how it isn't inherently racist to say 'you can't use/appreciate this art/symbol because of your ethnic background'

because white people receive praise where others face persecution.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 4

I think it's okay to use/appreciate. I guess the point is that it's bad (or UNFAIR) when the appropriator is praised when using those 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 3

symbols whereas the original owners are put down for them. THAT's bad. And racist because systemic oppression.. 2/2

seems like they've gone full circle in an attempt to fix things.

The first Americans in 50 years to try to keep black kids from going to class are self-proclaimed "progressive" hangnail activists.

Good lord. Using violence to protest violence. Fucking hypocrites.
