Interesting New Tactile Feedback Tech: Haptic Controller Enabling Bi-Directional Force Feedback for Intuitive Robot Teleoperation and Digital Simulation
Check "phantom haptic device" - those have been around since 1990's. The tacticle feedback felt incredibly real, you could glide the virtual finger along a virtual object (phone) and feel the rubbery buttons, slippery screen glass and other materials like brushed/anodized aluminum as well.
Even after 25 years nothing compares to the Sidewinder Force Feedback Pro Joystick. In Combat Flight Simulator you could feel the strain of pulling a high G turn, the loose stick of a flat spin and firing the Messerschmitt Bf 109 cannon felt like it was going to break your wrist.

I'm drawing a blank on the name, but they had this at an MIT research lab back in 1998. I think it had a cup for your finger instead of the pen.

Always loved trying out the Sidewinder at the Costco when they had their joystick demo displays.
