Get better positioning and use a summon. You can literally one shot everything in the game. Its OP when done correctly, and it was BUFFED.

I think when I fought the Fire Giant I had enough vigour that it would take three hits from that shield to kill me

I got him to phase 2 and for whatever reason when the cutscene was over I took 100% damage from nothing and just fell over dead.
Sometimes during cutscenes summoned ashes keep fighting and then when phase 2 starts, the resulting damage is shown. I've never seen...
...it happen for bosses but I guess the same glitch could work there too? Seems like that might have happened to you.
Nah, I don't use ashes at all, all solo. He was still in his animation when I keeled over. No biggie, got em on 3rd try.
