The joys of retail

I work in a liquor store near a large construction site, so naturally the workers frequently stop by to grab beer and smokes. There's a couple that are friendly, especially the foreman. Super nice guy, always a smile on his face. But I found out earlier this week from the higher ups that they'd caught him on camera swiping small bottles of Fireball Whiskey.

Well shit.

He tried it again today, and got caught red handed shortly after leaving the store. In front of some of his workers, no less.
Claimed he'd 'forgotten' that he'd put it in his coat.
Not sure if my boss is going to pursue legal action or not, but it's safe to assume mr foreman's not welcome in my store anymore.
Real shame, I really liked the guy.

That takes the piss...

Worked LP for years no one ever “forgets” what they put in their pocket. Crocodile tears

We literally caught a real nun - from a nearby convent - shoplifting in a hardware store, so yes.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It always worse when it’s a regular

5 years ago | Likes 101 Dislikes 1

Because they probably stole more than you’re aware of

5 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

But why fireball? Barf. Fireball is not worth your job and freedom.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Actions have consequences, nothing happens he keeps doing if not to your store then someone other poor shopkeeper

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

yeah we get lots of people stealing in our store, when we catch them they get mad at us... like we're the ones doing something wrong.

5 years ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 1

Do the women pee their pants? Happens a few times at my store.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Heh aye see this alot as security.

5 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Thats because they're fucking trash who cant emotionally process their shame and project it onto others.

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

How small?

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

375ml bottle, so pretty easy to fit in a jacket pocket.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If something is shoplifted when you're on shift do you lose pay or potentially lose your job? I'm curious why we put ourselves in danger 1/2

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

And others in a police scope because were trying to defend billionaires. Note this does not apply to mom and pops, talking about companies.

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

You get a good boy medal when you dime. Fact that this person was a friendly regular makes it so much worse they're going to be punitive.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

This happened at our store except it was me. Id noticed one of really nice old men drinks outside the store most the day. But when he 1/1

5 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

1/2 started being in the store for almost an hour and only bought a bottle of wine. And then spent 20m in the restroom i started 2/3

5 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

2/3 checking the trashcans. He was stealing beer and downing it very fast in the restroom. Dumping the cans in the trash. Made me sad...

5 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Dude’s got some issues. Getting caught probably won’t change the behavior.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

That's sad :(

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Could be dementia from alcoholism

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Are they getting that booze on the way to or from work?

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

@op My previous job was at a liquor store, getting to know the cool regulars was really enjoyable. Sorry this happened to you. *hug*

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

One of our regulars ran out with a case of beer. The off-duty cop, also a regular, chased him out the door. The cop car pulling up to 1/?

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

store had a couple more regulars in it. The car he ran to for his 'escape' was filled with regulars. The 2nd patrol car the escape car 2/?

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

almost crashed into also had a regular in it. If this seems like a comedy of errors, this also occurred at a regular time when all these 3/?

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

people (thief and 3 police and a trooper) were regularly in the store at the same time. So, yeah. That happened. 4/4

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Well that sucks.

5 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 3

Ppl like that ruin the kindness for the other ones being extra kind. Please dont let this scar you into being more jaded. Trust and love eve

5 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

Everyone* UNTIL they give you reason not to. Like this dude. THEN act accordingly; but dont carry over such water to next folk. You know?

5 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Blessings n love tho homie and im sorry you dealt with a manipulator like so! It was not cool from THEIR end; not yours!!!

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

There's a cost to looking at everyone with a clean state, and I've seen it phrased as 'Optimism Tax'. Takes its toll, but worth it.

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

alot of ppl that steal dont even need to. it's because they can, and they enjoy the rush

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I mean if its liquor, you can probably assume its because of an addiction

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I work in a hospital gift shop and one of my regulars, an employee, would come in every night and buy one candy bar and pocket another. 1/2

5 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

He got away with DOZENS before we caught him, and he was fired the same day. What a dumb way to lose your job lmao 2/2

5 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

This poor bastard. He’ll probably be fired and this his addiction will spiral. First smoking cinnamon sticks, then snorting the ground stuff

5 years ago | Likes 270 Dislikes 3

It's just to hold him over until pumpkin spice season starts again. He's just a basic bitch at heart, don't hold it against him.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Before you know it you're voluntarily doing the cinnamon challenge

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I've found going on the cinnamon buns helps with the craving though

5 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

Side effects were killer for me though

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

While Big Cinnamon watches from behind its curtain and has a good laugh

5 years ago | Likes 58 Dislikes 1

fucking big cinnamon...

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The big red machine claims another victim

5 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

The real crime was that he was stealing nasty ass Fireball Whiskey.

5 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

It's pretty popular here during the winter. Helps take the sting out of that -38°C weather.

5 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I can't stand it nor Southern Comfort. Rather than waste it when I bought it, I used FBW in my coffee. Same with Capt Morgan spiced rum.

When someone's being "extra" friendly, they get watched more closely.

5 years ago | Likes 727 Dislikes 8

Actually from the other side of it in retail you are supposed to be extra friendly and helpful to the customers you think are stealing.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Feel like you can feel someone out on whether its genuine or its smoke and mirrors most of the time.

5 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Well shit. Guess im on everyones shitlist

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Had an extra friendly customer once. Checked the cameras after she left. The entire time we were talking (with EYE CONTACT), she was 1/2

5 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 0

shoving earrings down the back of her pants. 8 pairs, all taken while looking me in the face. You bet we pressed charges. 2/2

5 years ago | Likes 40 Dislikes 0

Damn. I thought that i’d just be known as that wordy weirdo who buys way too much beer and preys on the best before discounts. :((

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

As all Americans are "extra" friendly that explains the extreme surveillance your gov and companies has pushed on the world

5 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 4

Can confirm. Always friendly to store staff, always followed by LP at the store. Granted they make great suggestions when i cant decide

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Well it's a good thing I default to polite but distant whenever I have to interact with anyone.

5 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

As a friendly Mexican, I get watched a lot when I go to the U.S. I'll try to be indifferent next time and test your theory.

5 years ago | Likes 163 Dislikes 2

Unfortunately depending on if you're tan or pale it may not make a difference.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 3

It's not a race thing... for me anyway. I'd still be interested if you notice a difference.

5 years ago | Likes 57 Dislikes 2

As a basic white girl who is a shade to golden; I get followed at makeup shops but left alone in groceries.

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

A lot of people have been burned by "friendly" people. Bad actors have made being friendly suspicious behaviour.

5 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

Where is it that you go that you’re getting watched? The context is important

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Sleep

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Ah, I see you’re in loss prevention as well

5 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

Law enforcement, years ago. Reading people is a good general life skill for anyone.

Drinking on the job too

5 years ago | Likes 69 Dislikes 5

In construction? Be glad its not something heavier.

5 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

No one said he was drinking on the job. There's a good chance he went there after his shift

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I do not condone it AT ALL, but it is so common. I grew up around construction guys. If they're not drinking they're high on SOMETHING.

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

That's not true that all are on something. Most trades and skilled labor are working their job just like anyone else.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Where exactly did I say all?

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The future studies that come out about substance abuse during the past year are gonna be... illuminating

we're looking at a massive mental health crisis in the coming years, gone be fun!

5 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Already starting. Psychiatrists are booked up in a lot of places hard to get appointments consistently and sometimes go 1.5 months between

We've been looking at a massive mental health crisis for years and societally deciding to just ignore it; increasing economic and social +

+ pressures, coupled with a woeful lack of resources to deal with the stress that causes, are not a recipe for a good time.

There's a reason that the stereotype of millennials is that we're all depressed; the prior generations have fucked the economy and refuse +
