Stumbled on this and thought i'd share. I commonly do a thyme, rosemary, sage, salt, and pepper rub and have been neglecting marinades. Maybe you have too ;)

Maple syrup in 1/2 of them. Makes my teeth hurt thinking about it.

4 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

Made the fajita chicken one. The sweetness took over every other flavor :(

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Do you know how many mariNADAs I had today?

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Favorited more than upvoted. That's rare.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Italian dressing is still better than 1/2 of these I'm positive.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We've done all of these. Hawaiian one is awesome, bbq is alright, rest are good but not great.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I find Grey Poupon to be a great addition to a lot of marinades, it adds such a great depth to the flavor.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Favourite and forgot, the 5th time

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

100% saving these. Thanks!

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

With all that maple syrup, I'm guessing Canadian ??

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Would these work for steak too?

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Saved to never look at again.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Somebody here likes maple syrup!

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As a trained chef all of these are literal weak sauce

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What the fuck is with this whoever made this and maple syrup? If I wanted to be having maple syrup I would be having breakfast.

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Is this the standards for healthy food in the us? That definitely answers some questions

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

And do it overnight. None of this 30 minute of lies.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Dooting this for later

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thanks!

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Over half of these recipes include maple syrup, is this from a Canadian cook book?

4 years ago | Likes 47 Dislikes 1

OP said they were diabetic, could be a diabetic oriented recipe since maple syrup is sweet but somewhat less sugary.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Ignore the Mountie behind the curtain

4 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

How to make some healthy. Just eat the ducking vegtables and get rid of the chicken, or so.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Boneless skinless chicken is extremely lean and healthy, but okay.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My usual "rub" is Garlic Salt, Pepper, Onion Powder, Garlic Powder on one side... on other side the same + a little Red/Cayenne Pepper...

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

basted with olive oil first... then depending on weight, anywhere from 6.5 to 8mins on a George Foreman med-high

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No cooking spray

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Favourited for... Reasons!Don't question me! +1

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Hey, folks with soy allergy, can anyone recommend a good substitute for soy sauce and/or Worcestershire? My wife is allergic (recent find).

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If you were in Germany I'd recommend Maggi. It's wheat based but also made by fermenting. It looks the same but is way more salty.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Unfortunately, she has a wheat allergy as well

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Damn. Then only fish sauce is left and I really hope she's not allergic to that too.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Liquid aminos

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Coconut? Are they tasty?

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Heck yeah that have that umami taste. I like brags brand. Its vegan and a source of all 9 essential aminos

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Depending on the dish, maybe Worcestershire or fish sauce. You'd want to use less though. Maybe try combining the two?

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Um... did you not read my comment? Worcestershire has soy.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I did not know that, those two are just common substitutes. At least Fish Sauce is an option for some dishes. There's some paleo recipes for

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

worcestershire it seems that don't contain soy.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Uh, then how do you make an unhealthy marinade?

4 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 1

Coat it in pure granulated sugar and velveeta cheese.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Myself, I use the standard motor oil and boric acid marinade.

4 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

Yep, not healthy

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Disgusting. I like overused McDonald's fry oil and hydrochloric acid myself

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Finally, someone familiar with the classics.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Use hydrochloric acid and asbestos? Joking aside pretty much any marinade is "healthy" if you're using it on boneless skinless chicken, 1

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

which is one of the leanest, healthiest proteins you can eat. Very little of the marinade remains on/in the chicken so even if you're 2

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

using unhealthy things in the marinade it's nbd. 3/3

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

And the chicken has been raised well and free of hormones/antibiotics etc. etc.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Throw it in Italian Dressing and chopped onions.

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

What's so unhealthy about that?

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

That's the joke, it would be healthier than those in the picture. Vinegar will also tenderize the meat somewhat.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Just use brown sugar, please don't use maple syrup.

4 years ago | Likes 79 Dislikes 10

4 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 4

How about honey? Maple is not common where I live, but people usually use honey when cooking to add that sweet touch

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Should work great, honey also tenderizes meat.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I didn't know that. One more good reason to try it!

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Try it! Honey is used in other things like honey garlic sauce.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Will do with those marinade suggestions! It is used in honey mustard dressing/sauce as well, so I guess it might work

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Any particular reason? I am diabetic and maple syrup is better than sugar for me but i can see maybe it burns easier?

4 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 0

I think REAL maple syrup is fine, maybe it's the flavored, corn syrupy maple syrup they're referring to..? The real stuff has more fructose?

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

Oh yeah and burnt maple does smell weird to me.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Dark brown sugar, like muscovado, has more nutrients and deeper flavor than refined white sugar. Demerara sugar is lighter.

4 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

No reason. It's marinade you can use anything that you like and it will work so long as you've got enough salt/time.

4 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 1

Oh yeah maple syrup is just harder to come by and the flavor is not good for these dishes. You can use fruit instead. I usually use apple

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Sauce to replace sugar and tenderize a bit

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Maple syrup teriyaki is just fine, I always make it with maple syrup. But, I'm also Canadian, so maybe I might be biased.

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

Most def biased lol

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I thought they were talking about the fajita marinade that included maple syrup, cause that one made me cringe a bit.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Oh, yeah, that one's definitely weird. I might try it and see what it's all about, definitely cutting the amount of syrup in it though.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Teriyaki isn't teriyaki. This isn't near teriyaki

4 years ago | Likes 148 Dislikes 1

Say teriyaki one more time.

4 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 1

Lightly fried fish filets

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I understood that reference-gif

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Teriyaki teriyaki teriyaki

4 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

*best Will Smith voice* AND YO MOMMA EATS TERIYAKI TOO!!

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

BBQ chicken marinade. Step 1. BBQ Sauce. NO SHIT!

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Ya I hadn’t thought of that

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

real teriyaki is gross, way too much ginger.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 22

not gross but to marinade a chicken in basically only ginger would be shit you need the sweetness to bring out the flavor.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 8

Though often added, classic teriyaki sauce doesn't even have ginger. Just leave it out. https://www.justonecookbook.com/teriyaki-sauce/

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

It's got soy sauce and (a form of) sugar, so it's near. But with maple syrup and no mirin, it definitely ain't gonna be the same.

4 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

Imho it stays a form of soy. The kick is missing. I'm a huge teriyaki fan.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yeah, I'm not arguing that it *is* teriyaki. It's not. Just saying it's near it. Teriyaki adjacent. I may be splitting hairs, though.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Everything is fine. You're not wrong. Have a good one. :)

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

"Teriyaki is just soy sauce and sugar." - My mom, who proceeds to mix soy sauce and sugar, then cook chicken, making another disgusting meal

4 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Have you not seen the vast olive groves of Hokkaido?

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Neither is the fajita one. Nor all sugars are equal and open for substitution with any other sugar.

4 years ago | Likes 43 Dislikes 0

Uh yeah... Definitely not any fajita mix this Texan has seen before.

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

As a Texan, I cheat on fajita. Caramelize onions with a splash of soy and then taco mix on the sliced chicken. It's delicious.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

If you've ever been to an authentic Mexican restaurant, generally authentic is pretty bland.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

Tell me more I"d like to learn something new.

4 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

TL;DR: Different sugars crystals are different sizes, syrup is cooked (vs raw sugars), and react differently with other ingredients.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's an incredibly broad topic and highly depends on your dietary needs and taste preferences. Unfortunately it's a DYOR topic but here:

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Ah sorry, I wanted to learn something about fajitas

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

My bad, I thought you were talking about the "not all sugars are equal" part lol

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Beef fajita = equal parts soy, pineapple juice, water. Skip water if you want it in 30 mins. From a reputable mex chain…

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

These are all diabetic-friendly recipes. Maple syrup has a lower glycemic index than sugar or even honey. If sugar isn't a concern, I'd pass

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Fajita seasoning doesn't typically have any sugar.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

"Healthy".... as it lists excessive amounts of soy sauce and syrup. Looks delicious, though! Favorited to try some of these out!

4 years ago | Likes 301 Dislikes 20

Its american so its relative. For example, I dont see '4lbs butter' in any of them

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

Liquid aminos are a delicious substitute for soy sauce

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Then you just add a 1/2 cup of salt to get the flavor back

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I mean you don't drink it....

4 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

Healthy compared to fried chicken. I suppose unhealthy next to plain unseasoned chicken.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Healthy is relative. It's not boiled chicken, but it's also not McDonalds.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I guess they’re saying healthy in comparison to marinades you can get in the store, which would have those things and then some.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Marinade permeates practically none of the meat once you remove it. It flavors about a millimeter of the flesh and the rest is discarded.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

cut slits into your meat when you marinade; that tends to help quite a bit. As long as you arent cooking giant pieces it should be fine

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I stab the chicken breast a few dozen times with a fork, then knead the marinade into the holes. It helps!

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

In which case why use so much damn marinade. Tou don't need anywhere close to 3/4 cup combined of bbq sauce and maple syrup to coat 2 lbs

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Because professional cooks and chefs have obviously had no time to get it right.................

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'd say it's healthy depending on what things you need to keep low. Currently I only need to worry about cholesterol.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You don’t have to drink the marinade, though.

4 years ago | Likes 102 Dislikes 1

Then what would an unhealthy marinade be if the logic is that we are not gonna eat it anyway?

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Seriously, you throw the marinade away? YOu don't make a sauce out of it? WTF? :D

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

If we want to can we still drink it tho?

4 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 0

You can drink it even if you don't want to-

4 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

You can drink if you want to, you can leave your friends behind.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This has literal connotations.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, but you should probably cook it first

4 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Not after it's been used as a marinade on raw chicken. Unless you're a fan of salmonella.

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I think it's "chickenella". Salmonella is for fish

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Syrup i get, but what's the problem with soy?

4 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

*soy sauce

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

Americans are afraid of salt.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Note that, when cooked, most of the syrup turns to char. I knew someone to coat steaks with syrup, but it never tasted it after cooking

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nothing. But Imgur LOVEs to upvote contrarians. So anything critical of the OP winds up top comment, regardless of veracity.

4 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 4

Soy sauce has high salt content, much like your comment.

4 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 6

Found the guy who drinks the marinade.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

You can also do a low sodium version of soy and many people choose to

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Good one, but remember, it's a marinade. Only a small % permeates the meat. Just don't drink raw chicken marinade & the salt isn't a concern

4 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

Rereading my comment, it's MUCH nastier than the lighthearted cheeky jab I intended. Tiredness isn't an excuse, and I apologize.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

If @Linnabelle is chugging raw chicken marinade, the salt is the least of her concerns.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Salt content. But a marinade by itself imparts a relatively small percentage of your daily recommended sodium content.

4 years ago | Likes 41 Dislikes 0

could go for a low sodium soy

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I never found a good one...

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Could, but unless you have health issues there isn't a need. Most of that salt stays with the brine rather than in the meat.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

salt is totally fine, its only a real issue if you dont drink enough water.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 5

Have to be careful with blanket statements like this, some patients must watch their sodium intake Congestive heart failure pts for example.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

This is true, special diets because a condition are not included in my statement.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Uhh that's not true, if you eat a high salt diet you can drink water by the bucket and it wont solve anything. I'm literally dealing with

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

this right now, and i drink 7 liters of water a day. I thought the same as you, I could eat as much salt as I wanted if I drank enough then

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Over-consumption of sodium can compound a *lot* of other health issues. Issues with weight, heart, liver, heartburn, diabetes, etc

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

But marinaded meat by itself won't be enough to cause you to over-consume salt. And a little salt is necessary to live.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

All of those issues are generally caused by other factors in the food not salt. If you have a special diet then ya limit salt

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Western medicine has a big misconception about sodium. Japan consumes more than any other country and has fewer cardiac events than anyone >

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

You pee out what you don't need. You retains water to accomplish this. But there is zero clinical evidence sodium causes heart problems.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 4

It increases blood pressure, which is a major factor stroke and heart disease.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Not true. There's evidence that a low-sodium diet doesn't necessarily improve health, but high sodium diet absolutely causes problems (1/2)

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1
