Tim Walz was a member of the national guard.

I am worried how this is going to go, but I do trust he knew what he was doing, and wouldn't have brought in the national guard if he thought they would just help ICE/Trump.

The mission of the National Guard is to keep the peace, but also to protect civilians. And don't forget that many in the NG are military veterans who actually know how to fight. They're not going to be pushed around by overweight military cosplayers.

The guards recent history has been peacekeeping by rousting protesters, I'll believe that's changed when I see their backs to protesters and their fronts towards the enemy.

Am I the only one feeling like this is basically the metaphorical equivalent of a corporate pizza party in a WW1 trench when we were given the impression they were sending reinforcements? I get it community trust and shit is important but we got too many dead and wounded while actual fucking death squads are roving around doing irreparable unconstitutional harm. The kindness is nice but hot coco before being marched onto cattle cars heading for camps is little if any solace.

Sending out state troops in direct opposition to federal agencies is something that has to be done very fucking carefully. George Wallace sent out the National Guard to prevent desegregation, and Johnson (correctly) federalized it in response; it's not a step that can be taken at a whim and with no risk of consequences. I for one think Walz should send them out into the streets fully armed and just encircle ICE to prevent them from performing their "work", but again: huge risks.

don't forget in 2020 that were delivery boys by day and gestapo by night, so definitely right. Keep your head on a swivel.

No masks over their faces needed?

Unlike the obese military cosplayers, the National Guard are there to keep the peace and protect civilians, not bully, terrorize, and murder them, so there's no need to hide their faces.

NG has a lot of people looking for college money and their recruiters promised them they’d get to fly helicopters.
