I always assumed these were jokes, then I saw a wildlife rescuer removing a coyote from someone's backyard and other than having first a wire pole and then a collar on its neck, it wasn't secured and it didn't bite him. It looked like it thought it would get eaten, so it was just waiting to die. He put it in the backseat of his car.
