I don't follow any of those theories... but... somebody myst have told him that if he didn't off himself then something worse would happen. Someone that can tell two fed prison guards to give the guy on suicide watch clean sheets, not mind a disabled security camera, take a three hour nap, and skip wellness checks. If it were merely a matter of him killing himself, he wouldn't have been able to do it. That's what suicide watch is for.

He was no longer in intensive suicide watch, which is round the clock. They only keep patients on that for a couple of days, because more than that can make the problem worse. But maybe your wild guess is right and psychologists are wrong. Try and experiment: Keep the lights on for three days while strapped to a bed, and every 15 minutes, someone checks your vitals.
