Walking back through the quarter at night while it's raining under the wrought iron porches with a Trumpet playing off in some distant ally is such a magical and uniquely New Orleans experience.
I was there a couple of times 20+ years ago. During summer when it was ridiculously hot and humid. It really elevated the piss stench. I have no idea what it is like today. Other than the food, I have no interest in ever going back.
We drive over to NOLA a couple of times a year since forever. So the first morning we walked down Conti onto Bourbon after IV Waist had cleaned, WOW! Disney should try to keep their place as clean and fresh.
Not so much, It still gets dirty if there is a lot of people down there, but they mostly clean the streets every morning. It doesn't smell like piss everywhere any more, just weed smell everywhere, now.
As of early 2026, New Orleans is experiencing a significant, sustained decline in violent crime, with homicides in January 2026 down 63% compared to January 2025. Following a 55% reduction in murders between 2022 and 2025, the city has reached a 50-year low in homicide rates.
You heard from the fox news that it is the dog-eating immigrants doing it? Right? Gotta be so as there's brown ppl and they don't speak no proper 'murican, right?
Theft? You are WRONG on that too. As of early 2026, New Orleans is experiencing a significant, multi-year decline in major crimes, with 2025 finishing with major drops in homicide and property crimes. Despite this, the city has historically had one of the highest rates of motor vehicle theft in the nation, with a 1-in-24 chance of becoming a victim of property crime.
hmm, The statistics don't match that. Violent crime has fallen from the last 3 years, as have petty crime. That said, Three years ago New Orleans was also voted #1 most dangerous city in the US, so *low-er* crime doesn't exactly mean low crime. It's funny that when I looked, there were a bunch of stories about lower crime, but all the danger aggregators make it as an "F" rating for most dangerous.
As with most large cities on the list, the problem is the crime outside of tourist areas in under served neighborhoods, account for the most of the percentages of violent crime. Those figures get pushed into the statistics and come off as making a place seem more dangerous than it is. I have visited quite a few large "safer" cities and still kept my head on a swivel, because crime can happen anywhere.
Do you live here? because you are WRONG. New Orleans has started 2026 with a significant reduction in homicides, marking the lowest levels in 50 years, with only seven recorded by late January 2026, a 63% decrease from 19 during the same period in 2025. The reduction is attributed to ongoing, coordinated, and long-term public safety strategies by local, federal, and community partners.
Then you are uninformed. Sorry I know cops and higher ups and we definitely have a reduction in all crimes. Even searchable statistics can show you this. We rely on tourism and to say untrue statements is not helping bring people here. Where do you live Hollygrove? 7th ward?

So no more weird milky white water constantly flowing in the gutters? I lived there for a year pre-katrina and that was weirdly always present

We're lucky that the supermarket we shop at carries it on occasion, so we buy several packages and store them in the freezer.

Respectfully reppin the city. Respect.

Isn't the French Quarter fairly heavily policed and it is the rest of the city that is notorious for crime?
RedCamaro
You would think so. Murder is up. So is pickpocketing and theft.
