I wonder if his friends ever found out what happened to him or if they just lived the rest of their lives believing he murderer his aunt & uncle, burnt down their farm, and fled the planet. At the very least that had to be what they believed for years.

Why would they believe Luke did it? As people living on a planet with semi regular raids by sand people, one of the galaxy's biggest crime lords and under a fascist totalitarian regime, reasons why a remote moisture farmer family might end up dead are easy to come by.

Because people would have seen him hanging out in a bar with wanted criminals (one of which killed someone else in said bar) shortly after they were murdered and then he fled the planet with said criminal.
