Sorry, non-gamers, this is a game related post. But maybe you'll find it cool that this was artificially designed!

Skellige

White Orchard

The realism here is... unreal. (⌐■_■)

I got these from this thread: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1166771 from user EatChildren, who unlocked the camera and zoomed out. There's no draw-distance fog, and the images are only slightly edited.

"I manipulated the colours in the [first] images to make them stand out a bit more, but otherwise the fog isn't there because the draw distance fog is more stylistic than technical."

From deeper in the thread, I pulled this comment from user Darkstorne, which I thought was very interesting (if a bit haughty).

"I'm an ecologist (survey for protected wildife/environments) and I'm amazed at how much research they've put into understanding flora. Their woodlands and forests have it all - edge effect, canopy, understorey, field layer, the kind of attention to detail I WISH other open world developers would use (The Elder Scrolls in particular has always had awful forest/woodland design). Heck, they even have pollarded trees around settlements when I'll bet less than 0.1% of the players will really notice or understand them. They've set such a high bar for environment design it's going to take a lot to be beaten."

CD Projekt RED really knocks it out of the park with game design. I can't wait for their next upcoming RPG.

(Sorry for the album re-post. I forgot to add two images, without which this post wasn't very substantial. Not totally sure adding images after submitting would work.)

Edit: I was wrong about a tiny portion of the map being playable (it's been awhile since I've played and someone in that forum thread misspoke similarly). @vauhtihirmu linked me a better representation of the playable area. http://i.imgur.com/6usK48n.jpg

witcher_3

My computer can't handle this level of realism...

Oh my, they are so beautifully done ;_;

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Give it like 5 years and you'll realize this looks like low quality shit.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I skipped passed this as soon as I saw it, but came back to give you a thumbs up for the warning.

Isn't that just Ard Skellig though? And wasn't it flipped?

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Top picture looks like Puget Sound

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This is amazing! If the witcher was made with photo realism I don't think my brain could handle it!

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

wait onyl a small portion of this is seen in game? so why design everything?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I read the texts after looking at pics and thought "the second one could make good map for a game"

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Now someone make a geologically accurate map.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I need to revisit this game. Ever since Fallout 4 dropped, I been wastelanding it... Time to Witch it again!

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Does it got guns?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Unreal indeed.

Better than Just Cause!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A lot of it reminds me of the coast of Norway, actually - Especially with all the islands dotting the coast.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Friend of mine, expat from Australia, used to tell me a lot that a lot of the countryside reminded him of home.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm particularly proud of the fjords.

ive always loved how blue the water is in witcher

It's too bad you're either stuck following dotted lines pointing to goals, or wandering aimlessly, because...

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

...dialogue and quest text weren't designed to allow efficient playing without quest markers.

Sonic 4

What are you talking about only a tiny portion around Novigrad can be seen? You can visit most of the area, the bits to the east are (1)

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

limited but even there I think you can visit the shores. Though the map did confuse me a little, since you don't see the bridges (2)

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

connecting some of the islands to the land mass. And what I called east is actually north-east in the game. (3/3)

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Welp I should probably buy this and stop helping the Commonwealth. Fuckin wastelanders

10 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 0

Preston would be disappointed.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But there are settlements that need your help! (No but really get The Witcher. It's amazing.)

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Witcher makes Fallout 4 look like what COD online is to Battlefield. No competition.

10 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 2

I'm going to have no life if this is accurate

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Anyone know when the next DLC comes out??

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Rumours that it's coming out around June, although nothing official yet

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ah okay, so long as it's good I really don't mind how long they take

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Wait so is only the red rectangle playable or the whole thing?

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

No, I misspoke, here's a better image of what I meant. http://s24.postimg.org/5mqda8p0l/1wougo.jpg

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Not sure what this is describing; the box covers part of Novigrad and part of Kaer Morhen. The pic itself is ~80% playable area.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Maybe not Morhen; been a minute since I last played.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I think Kaer Morhen is further north from this map, way beyond it. But the game presents it confusingly.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So the black rectangle is playable... what is the rest of the map for, then?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Nah, its pretty much all playable. OP got confused by the roofs on Temple Isle, I think. :)

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I haven't been to all the extremes of the map (only west and south) but these are the boundaries more or less

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

@OP is wrong, most of what you see is playable. Like a bit more than 2/3 of the image. I'll see if I can load a pick.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

@OP I think this is a more accurate representation of the areas you can visit on the map

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Cool, thanks. But still, what is the rest of the map for? Just filler so at the boundaries, it looks like the land goes on forever?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah you're right. I made a correction to the post.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Wow, this makes me want to play the game.

10 years ago | Likes 40 Dislikes 1

It has an amazing story and visuals, but boring gameplay, especially the combat. Still worth playing though.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You should, it's awesome and has tons of content whether you like to just roam around or concentrate on plot heavy quests.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Not only should you, you should also read the books. (If you like to read that is) they are amazing. Author is a bit pretentious though.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I thought the books were average at best. For the genre there's so many better authors out there imo

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think they are worth it for the battle at the end of the series.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's pretty good. And despite being third in the series, playing the previous games isn't totally needed (though it does enhance the story).

10 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

I read the books because of this game

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oops, 1y sorry

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm playing from the first before the rest and would be a lot further thru if my TV hadn't stopped working. Should I just skip to 3?

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Oh heavens no. I absolutely adored 1 and 2. If you're already making the effort, I say go for it. There is some great story to be had!

10 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Yay!the controls are kinda super clunky in one at least but it's fun so far. The cards were a funny surprise.

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

TW1 was based on the NWN2 engine if I'm not mistaken, and cdprojekt didn't like the result. Which is why they made their OWN engine for game

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I think 1 is my favorite in some aspects, though 3 in general blows it out of the water. Enjoy!

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I put the first down after ten minutes because the combat was truly awful. Did they fix it or does it still play like an MMO?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I'm not sure what MMOs play with a timing-based, click combat, but as far as I know it still plays the same. Kinda liked it though.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Shame. Wish I could play it with Shadow of Mordor or Skyrim combat mechanics.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It definitely does play like an older game (though it was released in 2007, it reminded me more of 90s RPGs). CDProjekt didn't like it >

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

2. either, which is why they made their own engine for the subsequent games. I'd say 2 and 3 definitely play more like SoM or Dark Souls.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

you like skyrim combat mechanics ... ?
