I was thinking of getting my dog one but afraid she would scratch through to the wires.

I got one for my teenaged beagle when she started getting noticeably arthritic. She lived to 17 years old and never got through to the wires. I did, however, have to throw it away (Just to be safe) when she started to develop some bladder control issues.
