When my nephew came out, my fundie Mormon parents were awful to him. They told him his “choice” was wrong. They even withheld college funds from him.
The funds were donations to my sister’s memorial fund. She died when my nephew was 3 months old. My MAGA parents are awful humans. I cut them off for other reasons, but their treatment of my nephew made me hate them more - and support him even harder.
My sister wasn’t here to raise him, I have provided unwavering support. I always will. My nephew is my blood, part of my sister. I can’t turn my back on him. I can’t understand how my parents do what they do. “Because god said”. Ugh.
5thAveSmugglerForHire
Me and my parents have been cutting out all the MAGA family and (former) friends. Finding out just how shitty of human beings they are made it fairly easy. When my grandmother dies, her funeral will be the last time I ever see them again. Not knocking out my one cousin who's gone full blown neo nazi will be a challenge for me and my sister, and she's got a black belt in Tae Kwon Do.

I haven't seen my parents in 5 years. My father, who admits he never voted for the 1st 60 years of his life, voted for the twat twice. As did my mother. I just hope I can sell their house for enough not to bankrupt myself paying off their debts.

Lost a longtime friend thanks to politics, bo real loss I guess... magat asshole.

There is no god worth worship that would have you reject family and harm a kid in the process. Any god that wants this is an asshole and unless you know how to make war on a god, deserves only to be ignored.

Gotta admit, it's tough.

I have no contact with my dad's (lifelong republican and enthusiastic nixon/reagan/bush apologist) side of the family for pretty much exactly this reason. tbf i have cousins that are cool, i just don't keep in touch.
im not sad about it. the ones responsible for my feelings made it perfectly clear they don't value me as a person. they lied to me and stole part of my inheritance. $490. idve been less pissed off if it was more than that.

It’s not about what their god says. It’s about what their social community says. They’re in a cult. A cult so phenomenally large, and contrary to reality that from the inside of the storm everyone else the people outside seem threatening. I’ve lost no sleep over cutting the cultists out of my social community. People that choose cruelty that easily have no place in my world.

What is the idea with your sister’s memorial fund? Is it to give money to a charity in her name, to pay for a grave stone for her, or something else?
lurkyloos
This was back in 2004. After the my sister died, they set up a fund to pay for the baby’s college. Now 2025, my nephew finally got the last of the fund to pay tuition.

My inlaws aren't coming to visit like they do every year. They are on a fixed income since they didn't plan for retirement and now live off dwindling social security and have medical issues they can't afford to address. On top, their vehicle needs new tires, the O2 sensor is on, and father-in-law can't get his blood pressure regulated because he is a hypochondriac now after not giving a shit about healthy living up until they got old. Good ridence. Don't need those MAGAt's in our house.

On the upside, with all those health problems they might not be around for much longer...

My cousin is trans and the whole family rejected them harder than anything Ive ever seen. Weve all been the black sheep from time to time, but this rejection was next level. Im the only one who keeps in touch with them, and weve become really close. Trans isnt what a lot of people thin k it is. And its different for everyone. My cousin at no point decided they wanted to be a woman and doesnt consider themselves one. But the testosterone was tearing them apart and something needed to be done.

Yeah, a lot of dumbass old medicare recipients voted maga, and they don't seem to understand that the nursing homes and assisted livings they live in, and the hospitals they use to stay alive, are probably only able to exist because of medicare. For a nursing home especially, getting a penalty that takes away your medicare dollars is basically end of business. Shut the doors, it's over.
Speaker2Animals
Medicaid. Medicare does not pay for nursing homes or assisted living.

Right, I always get the two mixed up. Point is, they're cutting both.

I grew up in a Christian household. But, like, actually Christian. My dad took us to other religious services because there's value in spirituality even if it doesn't look the same. We volunteered at places. Our minister was LGBTQ friendly because "God is love isn't that complicated. And even if you somehow don't get that? No where does it say hey judge people." LET ME TELL YOU was their a culture shock when I went to my college's Christian student group.
The701
A local political candidate started out her bit in a debate with "according to Scripture..." and I did a 🙄, but kept listening. Glad I did. I don't care for super religious politicians generally, but this person...I actually voted for her. Kind of in the realm of Democratic Socialist / progressive territory.

Again, I always point out, boomer's "capitalist utopia" from "the good old days" was cause by FDR's socialism. The GOP (and a good portion of the democrats) systematically removed the socialist aspects, propped up capitalism, and caused what we have today.
Zeddicuszull
This was actually caused by GE.
FermentTheRich3000
I went to school with George Evanston. I don't doubt he caused all this.

The first CEO to prioritize short term shareholder profits over anything else was Jack Welch whom ran and drove GE into the ground. He's the fucker that figured out that mass layoffs give the appearance of a company right sizing and thus their stock price increases and thus more money for shareholders.
He was also the first CEO to do the fire the bottom 10% annually so as to create a toxic work environment where short term performance and sabotage coworkers was beneficial.

100% correct. This is my fundie Mormon sister’s position on two hot topics. She was 14 when she wrote this. Indoctrination is sick.

Life Lesson: If someone "donates" to you but keeps the funds in an account with their name on it or even theirs and yours jointly, what they're really doing is letting you know that your access to those funds will be contingent upon things going the way they want them to go. If they really want you to have the money with no strings attached they'll just write you a check and be done with it.
Psymecoleesis
I agree with this to a point but if the person I am offering money to has shown a history of misuse with money, then keeping your name on it is absolutely justified.
I know that isn't the situation here, but it is important to discern there are times when giving total control isn't the right choice.
CommunCreator
This. Talk to a lawyer on your nephew’s behalf. Depending on how the funds were structured your parents might not have the authority to regulate its disbursement like that.
threepotatoesinatrenchcoat
If you wrote a check to a 3 month old, their guardian still gets control of it. It's better to put into a trust that has particular stipulations on it (only to be used for college expenses, delivered to the recipient's care when they're 18, etc.)
albertapaws2000
Your nephew should sue them for the funds. They have no right to them and are thieves.
lurkyloos
I’m glad it didn’t come to that. They got the last of the funds this year.
OmNachoMama
I set up my grandson's college fund in a Florida Prepaid account. They require it to be in my name, so I made his mother (my daughter) the custodian of the account (because they didn't allow joint ownership). If he chooses not to go to school, then the money will roll into some sort of savings account for him.
GreonBjorn
Are you telling me I could have just kept the fucking money in A SAVINGS ACCOUNT! I could have invested it and not be in fucking debt because (You have to go to collage)That B.S. B.D. that No One uses to get the job they wanted in the first place because you Always need 3-4 yrs Experience that you did in collage but that doesn't count.
Druidhunter77
I feel your struggle. I’m still in debt.
CitrusyGarlic
Even if it was supposedly because the kid wasn't 18 yet, it's still shady because there are ways of setting up trust funds that prevent the person getting the funds from accessing them until they're an adult.
NotSoFastener
UTMA accounts and 529 plans are the most common ways for people to gift money to children. 529 plans are for education funding, and the UTMA account just is converted to a regular account in the child's name when they reach the age of majority in their jurisdiction. If the adult custodian withdraws any funds, they must prove that it is for the best interest of the child or they will get the shit sued out of them when the child grows up.
Badprenup
In a lot of circumstances I am willing to give grace in a situation like that because if you don't already know what to do setting up some kind of trust can be kinda confusing and may be expensive compared to shoving the money into a savings account.
That said, the grace only extends to that circumstance and disappears if they misuse or block access to the money later. So fuck these MAGA assholes.
KWJester49
Yeah, have a joint savings account with my daughter for money she gets throughout the year and a 1 year cd with higher interest. When the cd matures i start a new one with the money from the old one and everything that went in her savings account. The interest isnt amazing, but better than jsut a savings account
lurkyloos
You nailed it. My bio mother wanted to be seen as the giver. The money didn’t come from them. It came from others. Once my nephew was old enough to know, their dad/stepmom told them the truth about the money and why Nana wouldn’t just hand it over.
Getting the last check to pay for uni tuition was a traumatic event for my nephew. My parents forced them to meet in person and held the check while they questioned my nephew about their 🏳️🌈 lifestyle.
That’s how you lose a grandkid.
BarryTheCyborg
If those funds were for your nephew, I would be hiring a lawyer to sue the shit out of your parents and force it out of them. Drag their name through the mud of their community so everyone knows they're shitty parents.

Trans girl who isn't alone anymore at least due to the family I chose here. I had to spend a lot of years alone on christmas too. It sucks. But I couldn't take it anymore, my dad just wouldn't shut up about politics that, in aggregate, hated me, hated my wife, and hated just about everything I am and care about. He always claimed he loved me, even when I called him out for this, but love includes, at the very least, not voting for people promising explicitly to fuck them over.

Just throwing it out there, but after like my 10th Christmas/Hannukah/holidays alone… anyone willing to welcome a disabled woman who isn’t trans but who is the black sheep of her family for being disabled (as if that’s my fault? Apparently it makes me a leech and faking my diagnosis’s which are well confirmed by doctors?) and also very anti-maga and parents are pro-maga narcissists. (As tends to go hand in hand)
Around the Denver, CO area
marsilies
The fact that doctors confirmed it means you're just so good at faking it you managed to fool the doctors. /s Sorry your family sucks. They're just using whatever as an excuse to continue to be the selfish, entitled narcissists they want to be.
givemepickles
To quote my dad, he both says I, “never invited him to my doctor appointments/ never allowed him to my doctor appointments to prove the illnesses are real.”
And in the same conversation 5-10 minutes later, “Oh THAT office? I wasn’t impressed with them. Didn’t like them. I liked that other office you used to go to you, I was a little more impressed with them.” (They got some stuff right, other stuff wrong, so I upgraded to 2nd better office)
So he admitted to meeting at least 2 of my doctors🙄
marsilies
Yep, he's just saying what he thinks disqualifies your current diagnosis. If you went back to that other doctor, and they confirmed the diagnosis, he'd badmouth them and deny he ever said anything good about them. It's not about logic or consistency, but making up excuses.
givemepickles
Funny enough— BOTH of those offices actually agree with my chronic illness diagnosis’s.
It’s just that the second office had better knowledge in how to treat it, than the first office. I caught the first office making mistakes. The second office actually had a doctor *with my same chronic illnesses* which is why he was so good at treating them.
How much better care do you get? A doctor who has lived the same illness! It was great!
So my dad still contradicts himself either way.
givemepickles
Precisely. Actually. I don’t even need to “go back” to the first office. The first office was the first to diagnose me with the illnesses.
The second office just *confirmed* the diagnosis’s.
