It subverts gender norms and expectations, and there is humour in that.

Nah the entire jokes hinges on him being in a Rocky-esque training montage, but there is also the sign girl in the picture he admires. The joke would work the same way if he was the water boy or referee instead, really anything besides the fighter. I think your radar might be a bit overtuned.
