Dude's commentary on orchestral conductors is hilarious

I mean the orchestra says they need 'em so I'll take their word for it - but it's not hard to imagine a metronome as a reasonable replacement

That's kind of like saying a playbook is a replacement for a football coach.

There's a bit more to that.
Metronome is very small, and only shows the speed, and not very clearly.
Conductor shows a lot more parameters at the same time, and visually, not acoustically (mostly).

Of course, I know it's more involved than a click-track - and the importance doesn't completely elude me. But they get a LOT of praise for something that, as a musician of 40 years, strikes me as a little bit strange

E.g., I've played for a number of bands, recorded/toured professionally, and trying to picture a dude center-stage facing the band and gesticulating wildly to the music just seems kinda silly. But again, I'm aware it's above my understanding/skill when I make my little half-joke

Correct.

Plus dynamic range instructions, etc. I had a conductor once who picked one dude out of 50 and said, "you're flat"

That's the talent

Pro musician here. He’s right that musicians in a pro orchestra do not need the conductor. The piece needs the conductor. Say the brass section thinks the brass should be louder while the violins think the violins should be louder. The conductor settles this argument, instead of both continuing to blare louder and louder and ruining the piece. Most orchestral pieces do not keep strict time; with tempo flowing and contracting, to speed up and slow down together an orchestra needs a conductor.

And yes, the conductor is also basically like a film director. They are often outrageously talented themselves and a musical genius. They know what parts of a piece they want to highlight, and command and illustrate to the orchestra how to do so. They tighten and loosen all the bits and pieces, measure by measure; they cajole specific performances from otherwise directionless performers, and if need be, catch and correct any mistakes. Finally, live, conductors signify the piece’s emotion & vibe
