I grew up on these books, and I love the films (except for Arwen) and continue to enjoy them. If you haven't seen the cartoon ones, I strongly recommend it.
Edit: OMG waking up to y'all comments made my day!
To settle my Arwen dislike, the truth is I loved Elrond, he was my hero as a kid, if I ever have the money I want a mural of Rivendell, the Last Homely House, on my living room wall.
She did not summon the river to wash away the Nazgul, Elrond did that in the books. Arwen is basically just a prize for Aragorn, she's mopey and generally uninteresting, and doesn't really do much. Her brothers were way more interesting.
Sorry, I'll go on forever if y'all let me.

These are great, but I wish more of the straight-up arty ones were original interpretations rather than just based on the films.

AllTheGoodOnesWereGone
Typical. Sean Bean doesn’t even survive the first image.
ViscousCousCous
Thank you! That was intentional.

What Jackson did in the art direction is amazing, but I've always had a soft spot for pre-Jackson LoTR artwork. Like Michael Hauge's take
QueenCole
The hobbits being Corgis is perfect. I don't agree with Legolas as a retriever though.
ViscousCousCous
eh, it suits Orlando Bloom better than it does Legolas

#27 ah! Bunny Suicides.
ViscousCousCous
I only found these recently, I've never really haunted the internet before, they're delightfully dark
RoutemasterFlash
Haven't seen those for years. They were great, though.

I want that first pic of Boromir, but with all the weapons of the Uruks he killed in that canoe with him.... Gimme it.

Anything Tolkien I love. I’m in the middle of The Two Towers. Read The Silmarillion and loved it. Boromir’s death broke my heart though. :(
ViscousCousCous
Silmarillion was my fav as a kid, really gave me a love of history

Did you know Tolkiens name is actually written as Token ?

Showed these all to my pup, Gimli. He was asleep, but pretty sure he thought they were awesome.

My exhusband signed my high school year book in elvish, using runes... sigh.
RoutemasterFlash
No true nerd would say they were fluent in "Elvish." I mean, come on, are we talking Quenya or Sindarin here?

FOUND STEPHEN COLBERT!!
javadad60
???
RoutemasterFlash
Colbert is a well-known Tolkien nerd.
javadad60
I know. I'm a fan. This is just some other random Tolkien nerd, right?
ViscousCousCous
If this is him, I am both terrified and flattered.

Telerin, and all six known Avarin languages.
RoutemasterFlash
I guess you could make those up, but Quenya and Sindarin are the only two that JRRT developed into full languages.
InTheBeginningWasTheNerd
Well, Quenya. Sindarin isn't sufficiently complete for conversation either.
RoutemasterFlash
Just fill in the missing words with Welsh. No-one's gonna know.

ovbs you learn the others from actual elves.
RoutemasterFlash
Oh yeah, duh.
catrlewkins
Splendid dump, but what's your beef with Arwen? Just her replacement of Glorfindel or something else?
OrionKaelin
Maybe they meant Eowyn? I sometimes confuse their names when talking about them,
ViscousCousCous
Eowyn killed the Witch King, I love Eowyn. Arwen was just interesting in different ways than the films gave her.
RoutemasterFlash
Yeah, Arwen was good in the films - it's in the books where she does basically mothing except exist and be very sad and very beautiful.
RoutemasterFlash
Probably the weakest single aspect of the novel - and a huge contrast to her ancestor Luthien, who is a total badass ultra-heroine.
ViscousCousCous
Luthien is like..... the best badass
RoutemasterFlash
More so even than Beren, really, who is a badass in his own right. I mean, she is *so* perfect and good at everything as to be, arguably, a>
RoutemasterFlash
bit of a Mary Sue, but at least she *does* something, in contrast to Arwen.
ViscousCousCous
It's also the bit at the river, it's just she did not of that kind of power
catrlewkins
As far as I know we're not privy to her power. She should not be able to "glow" because she never visited Valinor, still a good character.
catrlewkins
And Peter Jackson did right by the time and added a needed heroine in a very male-dominated story.
ViscousCousCous
Arwen in the movie is awesome all around, which is dramatically different from the books
catrlewkins
Yeah, so you like her? :P
Chilichunks
I got a Rankin & Bass Bilbo tattoo years ago. It's since been colored but I have no good pictures of that.
RoutemasterFlash
This will earn you literally unlimited respect if you ever end up in prison.
Chilichunks
Bilbo does go pretty hard, no cap.
ViscousCousCous
Bilbo is absolutely terrifying. He stole a bunch of dwarves from an elf-king, that gets you noticed.
ViscousCousCous
link is no bueno my friend, but I love good ink.
Chilichunks
Bah, looks like it's busted on mobile. It's not a link in browser. Lemme try again by posting from mobile.
ViscousCousCous
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS
Chilichunks
I actually don't :( It wasn't what I originally asked for and my artist persuaded me to get this instead. But I can make it better! I plan
Chilichunks
to get Gandalf on the other side of my arm and then fill the rest with goblins, spiders, and maybe the dwarves. We'll see!
ViscousCousCous
I hope your ink-art comes to reflect what you want! It looks great and I can't wait to see the Gandalf bit
NOFACE86
@op, I don’t think I’ve ever heard of anyone who had beef with Arwen. What gives? I love the films but I didn’t grow up with them like you.
InkyBlinkyPinkyAndClyde
I don't like her part in the movies either. Just unnecessary and blah.
howaboutnevernow
Inquiring minds demand you justify your beef @OP!
Drix1942
Most likely because she replaced Glorfindel in some scenes in the films. 99.9% sure no one in the world would otherwise have beef with her.
ViscousCousCous
There wasn't enough of her to have beef with, otherwise.
mssrdrippy
As someone who was there, 3000 years ago, people got annoyed that she wasn't Glorfindel. Not sure if that is this particular beef though.
eggmuffin
Glorfindel is a Big Deal in the legendarium. He's the guy the witch-king ran away from at the height of Angmar's power.
eggmuffin
Glorfindel comes and goes quickly, in the story, but in the films, Arwen was supposed to be a romantic motivator for one of the leads.
eggmuffin
Her character desperately needed some screentime. Otherwise, she'd just be this waif that longingly awaits her man in a palace.
glor1984
Not speaking for op here, but I am a big Glorfindel fan and was disappointed in not seeing him in the film. At the very least, it would 1/2
glor1984
have been cool to have Arwen alongside Aragorn chasing the Nazgul into the river as it happened in the book. 2/2
ViscousCousCous
It's not that film doesn't need strong female characters, it's that Arwen didn't do a lot of what they gave her in the films, in the book.
ViscousCousCous
her character WAS interesting, just not like how the films made her. It was the only thing I didn't like AS MUCH from the movies.
Sealkin
People don't understand the importance of the King's banner she handcrafted, and so are like "durrr she only stayed home and did sewing."
ViscousCousCous
She did so much more than that, but she did not summon the waters to wash away the Nazgul, and I'll die salty about it
NOFACE86
Fair, fair. Thanks for getting back to me @op one day I’ll read the books ?
ViscousCousCous
They're really good
NOFACE86
At this point that goes without saying ?
