Nice to know the history, but it would be super weird to have separate organizations today based on an understanding of people being either 'black' or 'white'. A lot of us are in-betweeners. Like, we also don't have separate rainbow-organizations, one for lesbian, one for gay, and so on, because now we know, it's about all of us, not sticking to divisions, because the division is the problem.

I have no right to join that discussion as someone who isn't affected but I DO have a responsibility to make those kinds of discussions antiquated. I see your point that it's not great to keep us separated but there are times when the comfort of sameness is reasonable.

There was the Pink Panther Patrol at one point, which were helpful to patrol gay neighborhoods at a time when the law basically turned its eye to gay bashing and crimes against the LGBT people. I would guess keeping white people out of the Black Panthers is a call back to Kwame Ture (then known as Stokely Carmichael) when he coined the phrase "Black power" at chair of the Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee.

I support the Black Panthers, but not sure about the White Panther name. I get it was made TO support the Black Panthers without encroaching on them, but still feels off. My brain is making a Black Lives/All Lives connection, in that just seeing the names, you would expect them to oppose each other.

I like the idea of it. Supporting the Black Panthers (while still keeping BP a safe, black-only space) with a sister organization like the White Panthers is legit, and I appreciate that it has an untainted history legitimized by martyrdom. HOWEVER the name "white panthers" would be exclusionary to people of color and it should stay retired.

Think about it like this. You'd be taking the "White Something" back, making it much less appearing to nazis. They'd be feeling as confused as you are right now if they were joining a group with a similar name, but white supremacist.
That being said, the mission is pretty clear and that's the important part. The idea is to take something that already exists instead of having these disagreements, and get organized ASAP.

I remember this from Detroit when I was young! My parents were social workers with the City of Detroit and many of their colleagues were Black Americans. It was outrageous that the Black Panthers were portrayed as monsters when in fact they were pushing for breakfasts for impoverished children and social justice. It was a huge disappointment when Jesse Jackson’s Rainbow Coalition failed to be supported. I had no understanding of the depth of racism .

The Black Panthers weren't made for you. The example of the White Panthers is also pretty cool cause it shows you can form your own group and still cooperate in a shared goal.
And if you think doing that didn't work, then just note how the US government feared them enough to invent chargers and send leaders to prison in order to destroy it. They wouldn't bother with any of this if they didn't matter.

Well as far as I can tell there's no national organization, so you can just start White Panthers MyCityName, update the 10 tenets, and be good to go. With these things, always start small, focus on bringing in more people, and reach out to others in other areas that can be emotional support - cause it's HARD to community organize.

I'm only spreading good antiracist practices stemming from scientifically sound antiracist research. Effective antiracism is a science-based, complex field. Knee-jerk reactions won't help us navigate social institutions derived from tools of systemic injustice or social behavior rooted in slavery and misogyny. We must listen to the experts and try to understand the grand scheme of things.
