I remember how often Limbaugh would just tell his audience "I'll do your thinking for you." I'd written it off at the time as just arrogant bluster trying to be funny. Didn't realize until much later how it's truly just him promising his audience they'll never have to think again, nor understand how much that appeals to some people.

Sorry but this is extremely dumb. IQ does not measure intelligence. It was invented by a French psychologist to test for learning disabilities in school children. He didn't call it the "special needs quotient" because that's not very nice. Using IQ as a metric for intelligence without understanding what it actually tests for makes this whole study pretty fucking stupid.

Had two MAGAt coworkers tell me, to my face, that gas prices are falling since the start of the iran war. We live in the same area, pass the same gas stations every day, and they literally argued that prices, which jumped 80¢ in a week, were going down.
I literally si not understand how they function day to day, being that stupid.

I always get the "ick" when anyone mentions "IQ" as an actual standard of intelligence. You can't divorce IQ from material conditions. Sure you can apply it to say Matt Gaetz or Stephen Miller or Pete Hexith who grew up rich but then other conservatives or "centrists" like Bill Mahr or Barri Weiss will try to apply it to refugees or outside the western cultural context, without any accounting for material conditions to attack Somali Americans for example.

It's not accurate to say that they're stuck at a 'child level' of development. A seeming correlation between ignorance and conservatism doesn't automatically mean that these people are stupid or have failed to develop - it could mean many things.
Intellectual laziness or heightened fear, for example, could also explain the mindset. Conservatism offers a safe and ordered society which appeals to people, even if that society is an illusion and in reality is cruel and oppressive.

Yes, it is. Human psychological development follows a highly documented, predictable set of steps. If someone stops on one of those steps they are, in effect, stuck at a child level of development. Physiological development also follows steps- if someone stop growing at age 10 no one would question what happened. Just because you can't see it doesn't mean it isn't happening.

I saw a study that I wish I could find again, which saw a split between people who are driven to spend time seeking the truth, and those who aren't. Basically some people are just not intellectually curious enough to question the statements they're given, or to try to fit them into what else they've learned and see where they do/don't align. And it's not that those people are stupid. It's that that's not what drives their learning. Unfortunately.

It's like some combination of seeking hierarchy/authority/"right answer" and inability to see from another's point of view. The so-called right answer that men will notice women is all they try to emulate. But if you also noticed a pretty guy in jeans they would refuse to acknowledge that was an innate drive out of your control because that would be the wrong answer because it is outside the hierarchical approved attraction men are allowed to have. I think there are some who are truly bi or gay, and since they themselves have made the "choice" to "be straight", they call it a choice. And I think there are others who are straight and who realize some people are attracted to the same sex, but they just say, too bad, that's wrong, so you have to push it down and hide it. Just like they do with men having emotions, or women being unhappy at being a domestic servant. They're supposed to console themselves that they're doing the right thing, /1

The sad truth is we're doing these people, and society, a disservice. If someone stops mentally developing at 2 years old we provide them services (woefully inadequate, but they exist) to help them to live and navigate the world. Yet, if someone makes it to about 10 they're just cut loose, out there taking out pay-day-loans and buying scratchers. Our cruelty makes us all suffer.

I can't speak for all countries, but in the USA we've made huge leaps in the past 30 years in identifying and assisting the developmentally challenged. If we broaden those efforts and continue them into high school, it could prove incredibly beneficial.

There's truth in what he's saying. Hence people working in higher ed are more liberal, while cops are likely to be conservative. But saying low vs high feels simplified. A key component to conservatism is a strict adherence to hierarchical structures. God, government, then men as head of the home. They can be intelligent but will still adhere to the structure. Thus, intelligent flat Earthers or JD Vance saying shit like "Daddy's home." Intelligence is used to force a worldview, not adapt to it.

With regard to hierarchy, that very much depends on the flavor of conservatism. For example, I'm not religious, I believe that government often makes problems worse rather than better, and sure, I'm the head of my home, but I am single at the moment. On the two axis political spectrum, I land somewhere between conservative and libertarian (not the clusterfuck that is the Libertarian Party). I am far from the only person that holds these views. We just get drowned out by noisy assholes.
