Progress/ transition/ self improvement type selfies are fine with most people. Just snapping a pic of your mug is 0 effort and 0 reward for everyone else, but put effort in and its rewarded whether that's the effort transitioning, loosing weight or making a badass cosplay. Tag it and add some cat/ dog/ birb tax and it's more than fine :D

FYI. the no selfie rule is not an official imgur rule. Just a 'sometimes' community downvote enforced guideline to prevent this from becoming facebook.

Yeah I know. I just don't wanna put a bunch of effort into pulling all my pics together just for it to get downvoted to oblivion. Though I may be wrong on the consensus because only 1 person says it's still a selfie :3

you could just do it, and turn it into a test. every hour or so, hide the post and make it public again, and keep record of when it gets downvoted most. then correlate that to the geographical locations & timezones which are most active on imgur during those times and make another post about your findings. but yeah, nevermind, just fantasizing.
