Unpopular opinion: the mirror thing is the worst vampire trait. There is no way to explain it in any more-or-less logical way, unless everything in your setting runs on pure magic and there isn't even remotely such a thing as real-world physics.
In 'Angel', when they went to the Pylea dimension where rules were different and Angel could see himself in the mirror, he wondered why his hair was like that and why no one told him. So, even if it looks good, it might not look how the vampire intended it to. It does explain why Spike often used the simple slick-back. It's a lot easier to style.
Willow asked Angel how he shaves in a Buffy episode and they rapidly changed the subject as Angel was about to answer. Though Angel was locked in a crate for months once and didn't grow a beard so maybe he can't.
Silver was considered a "pure" and "holy" metal, thus, effective against "unholy" creatures, such as Vampires. Although, recent depictions of Vampires have diminished the effect of "holy" symbols.
I have read hundreds of books, stories, myths, where vampires are indeed injured and killed by silver. It is not an uncommon myth if you consume the media.
It depends on the mythos, but they do mostly agree that beings cursed by god will have aversion to holy metals. Silver was considered a holy metal, and Dracula, a man who blasphemed was then cursed by god. Also Silver was the metal exchanged for the wicked deed of murdering Gods son, so those who do wicked are cursed to have aversion to silver. Also look at pop culture. Blade uses silver tipped stakes. or some amalgum of silver and mercury if I remember..
I ran out of room to give more examples, I am pretty sure the Belmonts from Castlevania used silver in almost all of their weapons. that one I am unsure of though..
Going into the wikipedia article tells us that it's from a 1939 Batman comic. He uses silver bullets to kill a coven of vampires that had kidnapped his fiancée. I guess that's as good a source as Bram Stoker, but I still don't like it.

Mirrors used to be made with silver nitrate that is then exposed to formaldehyde vapors causing a thin metallic layer to develop.
