This is why I don't buy it when people say "you shouldn't bother debating with people from the other side, you're not going to change their mind." It worked on you and it worked on me. It may not work all the time, but it matters.
That's more about debating (either online, as part of social media content, or televised 'formal' ones) being a method of platforming them and spreading their rancid beliefs. Personal discussion and confrontation of them - especially if you know each other - is quite a different matter
