The reason Greenland is important for US security is mostly against Russian attack, but by attacking NATO US would be so much weaker. No longer in NATO and in a war with the biggest military alliance on Earth.
Russia would invade the Baltics, China would invade Taiwan.

Let's not pretend this is about defence. The US is entirely capable of defending territory, whilst also not occupying said territory. 9/11 happened because Osama disagreed with the building of airbases in saudi. Pitiuffik airbase has been in Greenland since 43 and is surrounding infrastructure provides key defensive capabilities. This is a naturs resource grab.

Key portions of NATO’s underwater surveillance network run through Greenland. Subverting that would open the Atlantic to Russian submarines. So there’s that angle to worry about too…
